ROWAYTON.
The first Sunday in this month, was an
. interesting day to the Baptist church at
Rowayton (Norwalk). After the morning
service, the Pastor, Rev. J. Ballard baptised
four joyful converts into the fellowship of

The Ox Ridge'VSunday School attended
their annual pic-nic on Wednesday, the 15th,
at Scotch Cove. The day ’was fine and
everything passed off pleasantly.
The annual meeting of the stockholders
of Darien Seminary will be held this eve-
ning. The contract for furnace, registers,
&.'c., was awarded to Messrs. Bramhall,
Dean & Co., of New York.
Mr. J. C. Mather has commenced his
dwelling house on Prospect avenue, aud‘the
cellar is nearly stoned.
DANBURY.
The reunion of the 23d Regiment C. V is
to take place at Danbury, on the 25th inst.
The reception, on the part of the people of
the town is to be similar to that of 17th C. -
V., embracing a procession, consisting ofthe V
members of the Regiment, the Bartram &
Fanton Band, the Danbury and Bethe] mili-
tary companies, fireman,- &c.; a collation;

STAMFORD.
V The Shippau Peint folks claim to, have
sold $100, 000 worth of lots at the auction on
Tuesday last. The best lots sold at the rate
of $2, 700 per acre. The Steamer Colyer
brought up a party of 800 ladies and gents
from New York and Gratirlla’s band;.: A
collation was furnished flee on the grounds.
The clerks are making an early closing
movement.
The Stamford Water Company has been
organized by the election of Edward A.
Quintard, James H. Hoyt, H. G. Scoficld,
Calvin G. Child, and James B. Williams,
as directors; and at a meeting of the direc-
tors, Edward A. Quintard was elected resi-
dent; Janes H. Hoyt, treasurer, and
Scofield, secretary.
Mr. Elbert White has just completed a-
first-class double house, on Summer street,
suitable fbr two families.
William Webb of Darien, commonly
known as “Muddy B111 ” while coming in
the harbor Friday mill“ last, from fishing,
it being low tide, and 'sboat becoming fast
on a mud flat, he at 011‘ from his boatin
order to pull it 0 ,when he stuck“ to the
mud so fast as to be unable to extricate him-
self, and the tide coming in raised over him
and he was drowned:
The schooner Isabella, of Mianus, (loaded
with c- sabelonging to A. R. Newman, was
sunk 1n ell Gate on Saturday. Loss $2,-

BRIDGEPORT.
The corner stone of the Bridgeport. Or-
phan Asylum, was laid Saturday afternoon.-
The Bridgeport Iron Works have taken
the contract for furnishing the iron front
of the new building to be erected by the
Westport Bank. It will be seventy feet in
length, and three stories high.
A collection was taken 1n the East Bridge-
ort M. E. Church, Sunday week, amount-
.1ng to $40.00, fer the sufferers by the late
V Avondale coal mine disaster.
Tuesday as Mr. King, the Superintendent
of the New Haven Arms 00., was driving
near the lower bridge, the forward wheel of
his carriage ran off, and the horse ran away
throwin him out and breaking the carriage.

A serious accident of a painful nature
happened to Mr. C. Cam, baker, at 49 Beav-
er street, last Wednesday ni ht, which it is
feared, will prove fatal. 1': fell from his
wagon, .‘and 1n falling struck his head against
some sharp substance-cutting a deep gash
about one inch' 1n length, behind his ear, and
bruising his head 1n other places.
A most dastardly attempt to burn the
buildings of the Wheel Wook Bending com-
pany was made on Sunday evening week.
A man who had been emplo ed as waiter
in the family of Mr. Wright, 0 Fairfield, tor
the last twenty-seven years committed sui-
cide yesterday by shooting h1mself w1th a
pisto .
Friday, abaggage and passenger car on
the Housatonic road, as the train arrived in
Bridgeport, ran against a car l .aded with
marble, standing by the sides of the platform
crushing' 1n the sides of both cars, and badly
in htenmg the passengers.
r. I-saac Bradley from the cartridge shop
of the Union Metallic Cartridge Company,
East Bridgeport, rsgoing to Russia to super-
intend the manufacture of cartridges for the
Russian government.
Frederick Taylor of Bridweport, fell from
a pear tree in km yard on Thursday, and re-
ceived' mjuries from which it is feared that
he cannot recover.
Notwithstanding the legislature has passed
a law that all children', without res set to
color, from the age of tour to sixtefiears,
shall go. to the public schools, in s e 1n-
stances in Bridgeport colored children pre
sented to the public schools have been re-
fused admission. A meeting of the colored
people was held m that city on the 13th, at
which a resolution was adopted protessiug
against this proscription, and a committee
appointed to present the resolution to the
school committee. —Standard.

A good story is told of a Quaker land-
lord at Atlantic City. An urchin of five or
six was drumming noisily upon a hand-
some waluut. balustrade. The friend re-
monstrated with him without effect, and
then quietly took him up bodily 111111 carried
him into the back yard;_ In a moment the
boy’ s angry mother made her appearance
and opened upon the landlord with a to‘r-
rent of invective, concluding with “I’l leave
- this house instantly.” The Quaker immeadi>
ately touched aVbell and said to the dark-
skinned waiter who responded to the call,
“Leonidas go up to 42 and bring down. this
friend’s baggage when she tells .thee that
she is ready for thee. If she wants thee to
get a carriage for her, or has any other
. commands until she 1s gone, thee will see
them attended to. ” The lady suddenly be-
gun to cool down, apoligized, and' asked to
be alloWed to retain her room, but the re-
ply “M house shall never make any one a
liar. y book-keeper. will settle wrth thee
Fare thee well.” Soon afterwards her
trunks were taken down stairs by. the stout
negro to the music of her boy’ s voice caused
bv her imparting to him unexpected caloric ‘
with a strip of shingle.

W The State election in Maine on Mon-
day r'esulted in a commete Republican vic-
tOry. The total vote was light but the Re-
publican majority on the State ticket is rt-
latively about the same as last year. The
running of a third party ticket by- the Tem-
perance men and other impracticables had
the effect of giving several new 'members to
the Legislature to Democrats. But the third
party men did not succeed' electing a sin—
gle man of their own.
A great many steps .would be saved, if the
drivers of carriages and other vehicles,
would not stop their teams on the cross-
walks. The law forbids it .-—Standard.

death of a man says “it is a dreadful blow

A Danbury farmer, whose stock of hay
was “growing smaller by degrees and beau-
tifully less, posted himself one night to find
out the cause. and soon had the satisfaction
of seeinga fellow approaching with a fork.
The farmer waited until the thelf had got
his fork full and was walking off with it,
when he came up behind him and set fire
to the hay, which soon' blazed up terribly.
The fellow was effectually cured of stealing
hay from that locality

The Pulmonic Syrup is a medicine which has had a
long probation before the public. Its value has been
proved by the thousands of cures it has made through -
a period of more than thirty ears, in all of which
time its reputation has constant y increased, and the
most obstinate skepticism can no longer doubt that
it is a remedy which may be used with confidence' 1n
all cases Which admit of a cure.
If the patient will pcrseveringly follow the direc-
tions which accompany each bottle, he will certainly
be cured, if his lungs are not too much waste; 1 to
make a cure possible. Even in cases supposed to be
incurable, when friends and physicians have despaim
ed, the use of this medicine has saved the life of the
patient, and restored him to perfect health.
