NEW CANAAN.
The annual Pie-Nic of‘ St. Mark’s church
Sunday School will take place on Wednes—
day Aug. 25111, 1869, at Prof. Woodbury’s
G rovc, Spring Dale. Teachers, friends and
children meet at the church at 9 o’clock a.
in. Each family will provide refreshments
for the table, and a band of music will ac
company the Pic-nic.

RIDGEFIELD.
The third Festival of the Floral Society is
announced for Wednesday evening, 25th
inst.
GREEN WICH.
The Randall‘s Island boys in uniform will
pay a visit to Greenwich, Conn, on the 3rd
of September.
NEW CANAAN.
An old barn belonging to Mr. Sherman
Smith, was struck by lightning during the
storm of Saturday, and was consumed by
fire.
WESTPORT. '
Some important changes have been made
in the areoitecture of Christ Chu eh. The
old, high, box-pulpit, has been'removed,
and an altar of approved model taken its
place. Instead of the antiquated desk, pul-
pit and reading lectui-n, of ecclesiastical
patterns have arisen, givtng the interior an,
improved appearance. We regret to learn
at the projects of adding a recess chancel,to
and re-seating the church, have been aban-
doned. .
The building for several years occupied by
the First National Bank, together with the
building adjoining, have been sold to a man
by the name of Nash, who will take imme-
diate steps for their removal. They are to
be placed on the open lot Opposite O. J.
_ Jones’ Tin Factory, and will be converted
into stores 01' dwellings. The Bank, soon
as its site is vacated, will commence the erec-
tion of a fine brick structure, 70 by 56 feet,
and three stories high—the upper story to be
devoted to the purposes of a public Hall.
During construction, the business of the
Bank will be transacted in some place ad-
jacent.
The double shower on Saturday evening,
was terrific in the extreme, the lightning
striking in many places, and playing all
sorts of pranks with trees, telegraph poles
and wires. No serious damage was done
that we have heard of. The rain fell in tor
rents, and came to thirty vegetation at an

DARIEN.
The lightning playeQ a strange prank in
Darien on Sunday night, the 15th inst. It
struckan apple free standing on the prem
iscs of Elias B. Gerow, and within three
rods of his dwelling house, scoring the bark
and running along'on the ground about six
feet when it run into the ground, making a
hole about six inches in diameter. It pass-
ed along apparently under ground about a
rod and then came out making another hole
about the same size as the first and then run
along on the ground, cutting and burning
grass, to a ditch through which the waste
v. ater runs from a sink, thence to the sink,
cutting a hole through it, and finally mak-
ing its escape through a window near by,
breaking out several panes of glass, but
without injuring any of the inmates of the
house.
In the storm of Saturday last a new house
on which carpenters were still at work, was
struck, it is said, and one of the workmen
had a hatchet knocked out of his hand, but
was not injured.
BRIDGEPORT.
Ten State prisoners were sent from Bridge-
port Jail to Wethersfield, Saturday after-
noon. Six have been previously sent up,
making sixteen in all, the largest number
over sent from this county at any one term
of the court. _
The Newark Journal is of the opinion
that the excursionists from Bridgeport to
thatcity recently, as peach eaters, were a
success. They “busted” several dealers, it
says, and the street near the dock where the
boat landed was paved with peach stones.
Five hundred excursio'nists from Newark,
N. J ., visited Bridgeport, in the steamer
Stamford, on'Friday last.
A valuable horse belonging to Mr. Benja-
min Clark of this city was killed a few days
since in Greenfield. A piece of tin was
tied to his tail,by some boys, when he be-
came frightened and ran, jumped down a
precipice and broke his neck.
The Wheele & Wilson Band are making
arrangements for a grand excursion to Cen-
tral Hark, New York. . ,
A drunken man fell across the track at
the depot as the 10:27 train was coming in,
and was dragged from his perilous position
by the baggage master on the Housatonic
road, just in time to save his life.

A remarkable escape from death on the
Ridgefield Branch Roadis told by an eye
witness. One ( f the laborers was washing
his hand under the shade of a large tree,
when a rock weighing about two hundred
pounds was hurled through the air from a
blast that had been let off. The rock came
with force enough to knock the tree over,
which fell by the side of the man on his leg
knocking him down, tearing ofi‘ part of his
boot and badly bruising his foot and leg.

The Borough authorities are in session
over the claims arising from the Kohanza
disaster. Two weeks will be required to
complete the business.
A horse belonging to Hibbard Wildinan
died from the bite of a snake received in his
meadow, last week. _
The reunion of the 17th regt., which is to
be held in this town on the 28thinst., prom-
ises to be a pleasant occasion. The man—
agement of the affair has been placed In the
hands of an efficient committee of citizens,
and it is the intenti m to make the day
one to be remembered with pleasure by all
parties. Of course the ladies _are expected
to do their share in the modern—Time.
STAMFORD.
A race came off on Monday between the
,sailboats “Eva C” of Portchester, and the
“Dictator” of Stamford, for $150 a side, re-
sulting in favor of the former.
A man named James Mulligan, in trying
to recover his but which was blown off by
the wind, fell overboard from the steamer
Shippan near Fort Schuyler, one day last
week, but was finall rescued by :1 Hell
Gate pilot named Nic olas Abbott just as
he was sinkin

“moonlight hop" at Roton Point, Wednes-
da ' evening.
Two miles of the new road on the west
side of Shippan Point have been. finished.
The work is well done, and the drive is one
of the most beautiful in this vicinity.

(The importance of setting gears in this position is
not generally understood.)
This result can be obtained by putting all the gears
on our. END of the Wringer. But in so doing it is
necessary to pin the rolls together to keep the cog:
wheels in gear; also, (when the PATENT annon is
not used) to put. a block between the bear-in s of the
rolls to prevent the gears being pressed toget er close
enough to bind.
The Patent Flange Cog-Wheels, when used on both .
ends of the Wringer in connection 'wlth but onenes-
‘sunl sonnw, allow the rolls to separate at Eirnun END
as one end or the other will always be in gear, If a
pressure screw was used at. both ends, this would not
be the case, because one end of a roll would have no
contra. over the other end. But: with on: pressure
screw in the mount, the pressure is equalized, for if
one end is forced u , the other end is thereby forced
down. The CO -w eels cannot be thrown out of
gear on both'en s of the Wnnger at the some time,
unless the resume is taken off. ~
The NO ELTY is fastened to a tub or box by a
Patent Curved Clam . which has an equal bearing on
a tub the whole onglh of too ernger.
Other Wringers are merely fastened to a stove at. each
end and are thus liable to wrench the stave from their
proper position and ruin the tub.
