On Saturday last, one of the greatest'of
natural phenomena—the eclipse of the Sun,
took place, and was witnessed bL a large
number of persons here. Foituna'tely the
sky was clear during the day, 11nd but par-
tially beclonded utter 5 o'clock, so that all
were favored with a comparatiggly, 80.06
view. By means of a smoked glass we were
enabled to observe the .Sun’o- disk; :which
was nearly all obscured. To useustronomi-
cal terms, "10.6-1'0tl1s digits of the Suns di-
ameter was covered at greatest obscura-
tiou.” Some very curious, and almost un-
earthly appearances were observed' in con-
nection with this eclipse, among which,
may be mentioned the nearly instantaneous
darkness which from its strangeness was
very impressive—a darkness resembling
neither that of night, or the gloom of twi-
light, but possessing a peculiar shade, al-
most indescribable; seeming to come 00111
the moons shadow, enveloping the specta-
tor, and yet, not inclosi'ug‘the Whitl'éufinos-
pherc above his horizon. Also the mass of
“uninv‘elopod air,” so to speak, which up.-
- peared to catch the fading sunlightangln re-

leads one to ask, “can we put confidence in

The pleasure derived from yachting and
boat-racing, and the agreeable termination
of one or two late races, particularly
that 011' Cedar Point on July Blot, has led
to a sort of strife to excel in the art. Ac-
cordingly, several of the old models now
afloat, will be set aside, and new ones put
in their places. Mr. C. J. Ketchumisnego-
tiating for a splendid establishment which,
we understand, will be able to outsail any-
thing of her length in Connecticut waters.
' Mr. Francis Burritt also, has'a twenty-four
font boat on the stocks, of approved model,
fastenings, &. ,calonlotcd to equal or excel
anything of or length. Others are about
to follow the example, but among them all,
we fear it will be dificult to find a craft ca-
pable of competing successfii'lly wizh the '
graceful Una, whose symmetrical lines ro-
. pose serenely at her moorings south of the
bridge. This little water-nymph rests alone
upon her merits, and in herself, contamsall
