WESTPORT.
DEAR. Ens.—~On Friday, July 30th, 1869,
a Regatta will take place off Cedar Point,
‘Vestport harbor, open to boats 38 feet long
and under, from all parts of the State.
Boats may be entered as follows : lst class,
30 feet to 88 feet length ; 2d class,»:20,.fcet" to
30 feet length ; 3d all boats under 20 feet in
length. Six prizes-are expected: to be otl‘er-
ed, two for tlle‘first-class, two" for the sec-
cond and two for the third. Time will? be
given as follows : viz :—First-class boats,
two minutes‘ to the’foot‘; Second class boats
one and, one-half minutes ; Third-class
boats, one minute. Boats—can be entered by
letter to the Postmaster at Westport; also,
up to time of measurement on the day of
s .iling. '
‘ The race which takes place otl‘ Bridgeport
on Wednesday, (to-morrow)'will be partici-
pated in by all the fast boats here. A fair
day and good breeze arc earnestly hoped
for. ' I
On Sunday evening last, as George, Tut-
tle, Esq., in company with ladies was return-
ing from church, he was assaulted and beat-
en by Barney McGirk, on the following day.
McGirk was arrested, tried, fined $19.64, and
discharged; re-arrested on Tuesday fer rc-
sisting an officer, fined $3, and costs, and
again discharged. W'e think when a man
can pummel another without just cause—can
openly resist an officer who has him in
charge, and after due trial he set at liberty
by payment of a more fine of dollars dnd
cents, it is high time for the people, when
, they meet to decide by ballot who shall be
their rulers, to select candidates who will
work for their protection, and who willlnot
palpably disregard everything that does not
operate for their political interests. '
Work on the Saugatuck bridge is advanc-
ing so fast that we. can anticipate its speedy
completion. We predict that persons will
be able to cross upon the string - pieces by
Aug. 20th, and the structure entirely finish-
ed on Sept. 1st. The work is under the im-
mediate superintendcn‘ee of Mr. Briggs,
owner Of the patent truss bridge. ..
The season of “hay and harvest” is nearly
over, and soon a great rushfwill be made
for the “beach.” We know of no more ra-
tional way of passing a fair day.

There are deposited in the Stamford Sal"
«lugs Bank $713,208, and by the good
management of- the concerns of this Bank,
by its directors, there is now on hand a cash
surplus of about $35,500. The Bank has, of
l its deposits, $320,000 invested in the bonds
of the United States Government, altogether
worth some $65,000 more than par; so that
if the concerns of the Bank were now closed
up, there would be paid to the depositors
not only the $713,268 deposited, but in addi-
tion, the surplus of $35,500, and the premi-
um of $65,000 on the Government Bonds
the Directors of the Bank contemplate pay-
ing to their depositors, in the future, interest
at the rate of 7 per cent. per annum, in semi-
annual dividends—Adama-te.
BRIDGEPORT.
A young ladywhile attempting to alight
from a carriage in Bridgeport on Saturday
- evening, a portion of her crinoline got entan-
gled on the seat and she fell backward,
striking the back of her head on the
edge of a. curb stone. A good sized chignon
saved her from serious injury and perhaps
instant death:
While three Bridgeport boys were in bath-

BUFFALO SHOOTING—I have no idea of
the quantity offload that a buffalo can carry
off, if tlle"'sho't‘s’ are nonvell "placed. The

ing usually counted as a first-rate run.
A word here in reference to the arms used
in buffalo hunting. Those who prefer a car-
bine will find the short Ballard or Spencer
guns very effective, as they shoot “heavy
lead," and may be used with great rapidity.
The carbine is frequently used without;
bringing it to, the shoulder, the piece being
rested across the saddle in front of the hunter:
and discharged while in this position. This
Was the old style of hunting the buffalo when
breech-loaders were unknown, and a short,
muzzle-loading ride of large here was used
as the best arm for buffalo hunting. With
such a weapon the hunter dispensed with a
ramrod, charging his gun by simply pouring
the powder into the barrel, and then drop-
ping .a bullet from his mouth into the gun,
and sending the charge home by striking the
butt of the rifle smartly on the pommel of the
saddle.
0f the revolvers in use the old style dra-
goon pistol of the Colt pattern seems the fa-
'vorite, th gh the bullet that it shoots is no
heavier ‘t an that used in the present style
known as Colt’s army.revolver. The pistol
itself is heavier and more steady to shoot,
and the cylinder is chambered for more pow-

Masonry Among the Indians.
Among the Cherokees, Choctaws, Chick-
asaws, Creeks, Seminoles, and other South-
ern Indian tribes,. there has existed, from
time immemorial, a secret fraternity of
’sworn friends, having signs, tokens and
words known only to themselves, and con-
' fined to the male,population. - The form of
initiation is said to be simple, but their ob-
ligations to each other are held to be of the
most solemn ‘and binding nature through
life. If one of the fraternity is in danger or
trouble, his claim for protection or aid of
his brethren is not to be disregarded; and
if at anytimc'flight from enemies becomes
necessary, he is a? liberty to mount the horse
of abrother and flee from his persecutors.
The Writer has been informed by intelligent
Indian Freemasons, that there is enough in
the ceremonies and obligations of th’ fra-
ternity ’ to justify the‘cdn’clusion that it had a
genuine Masouie origin, thoughat what pe-
