A missionary of the American Sunday
School Union in Missouri addressed a day
school near Muddy Creek. The children
ran around on the Lordls-day without any
restraint. He visited their families, and
found one mother who felt deeply for her
own children and for the children of the
neighborhood. She told him there was not
a church near, nor a man who professed rc-
ligion, but sent him to a man who could
sing. The missionary appointed a meeting
for the next Lord’s-day, and parents and chil-
dren came together into the old school-house.
Not a praying man was present, nor one
who would consent to open a Sunday school
by reading the Scriptures. The mothers
wept, for the Spirit of God was moving upon
the hearts of the people. Finally the young
teacher of the day school rose and said she
would open the school if Mr. R—would
sing, and so a Union Sunday School was
organized. The people gave $10, for which
the missionary gave a ‘16 library. A year
after the old school-house was to small to
contain them; and so an arbor was built
and filled, and soon two ministers came and
orgauixed a Baptist church of thirty-five
members, all from thalUm‘on Sunday School.
They can pray now, and as one crosses Mud;
dy Creek the water looks clearer, and there
stands a large church to the honor of Christ,
a testimonial to the American Sunday
School Union.
“ This missionary reports that in 34 months
he has canvassed 16 counties; organized 119
new Sunday schools ,having ’17 teachers, and
5,000 scholars ; visited, addressed, and aid-
ed 294 Sunday schools, having 2,069 teach-
ers and 13,681 scholars; travelled on foot,
and on the “Sunday school pony,” 7,600 .
