NEW CANAAN.

The Locomotive or the New Canaan
Railroad having undergone repairs, appears
again in a bran new dress of paint, and
takes the place of the much disliked dum-
my. The CommissiOners have madean in-
spection of the road and formally accepted
it on Friday. The trade on the road for the
Week ending June 12th was 727 passengers,
for Saturday alone, 180; Monday, 187.

Dr. Stone, though he spends this summer
in Stamford, still has recourse to the pure,
health-giving air of the interior.

Benedict, Crissey do 00., have added a

_new feature to their business in the shape of
an agents sample wagon.- .

Horace Ayres, after a torturing illness of
six months, died on Saturday morning, 12th
inst.,he was lowered to his last resting place
on Monday 3 o’clock, his brethrm of the
Masonic Lodge attending the funeral.

The Onion crop of New Canaan, like
most other localities, is a failure, probably
owing to the chaify quality of the seed oc-
c.1sioned by so much rain, and so little sun-

The ladies of the Congregational church
are to hold' a festival at Betts’s Hall,on
Wednesday and Thursday evenings, when
strawberries in abundance and is good social
entertainment may be expected.

The Ssugatnck M. E. Church will hold
their Annual Strawberry Festival in the.
Rubber Works, near the Railroad Bridge,"
on Wednesday and Thursday evenings,
June 16 and 17.

RIDGEFIELD.

The first exhibition of the Floral Society ,
takes pla‘eo next week Wednesday evening.

According to report, says the Jefims‘an,
there seems to be some tall blasting done on
the Ridgefield Branch Railroad. 0n the
29111 ult., a seam was opened, it is said, about
two miles from Ridgefield village, and

charged with forty-tWo kegs of powder, be-
sides a quann’ty of glycerine. The whole
'charge cost $300. The result of the explo-
sion was the removal of earth and rock
which it would have cost $2,000 to remove
in any other way“ The explosion was so
great that it shook the windows in Ridge-
field.

At the Annual Meeting of the Portchcster
d1 Ridgefield Railroad, besides the election
of embers, reported last week, they unani-
mously reaffirmed the following. —

Williams: The co rotors of the Ridge-
field and New York ilroad Company, at
a special meetingheld on the 20th day of
J My 1867, adopted the following resolution:

but no assessment shall be made of
more than 2 per cent. until e whole
amount of stock shall have been an scribed,
estimated to be 11 for the completion
of the road from Ridgefield to such point as
shall be decided on by the company and no
assessment shall be made until $850,000
shall have been subscribed for the Green-
Wich route, therefore

Resolved, That we. the subscribers to the
capital stOck of the Bi field and New
_York Railroad Compnngéon general meet-
ing assembled June 1 1 for the purpose
of organizing said company, do re-afiirm
and approve of said resolution and that the
above conditions of the foregoing resolu-

tions shall govern the action of die Direc-
tors and Ofileerslf the Company" 1n relation
to the stock heretofore subscribed, on the
conditions of said resolution. 3

The route of the road has been surveyed
once, butanew and more thorough survey
will be at once made. The distance from
Ri field center to tide water, at Port Ches-

r, s from 23 to 24 miles. The terminus of
the road at Ridgetield' 1s over 800 feet above
the level of the sea, and the grade averages
about 30 feet to the mile. 65 feet being the
very highest to any one mile. The line
runs throngh a very fertile country, by ex-
cellent water privileges, and through some
of the loveliest rural scenery in the country.
The route is laid through Lewisboro, Pound-
ridge, Longridge, Stanwich, North Green-
wich, Pemberwick Valley, near the Bolt
Works) to the Byram River,- ort Chfler.

The estimated sum required to build the
road' 13 8750000, a rather high estimate, of
which sum W, 000 has already been sub-
scribed.

We understand that at a meeting of the
Directors last week,“ they voted 11. .03 per
cent tax on their own individual stock for
the purpose of having a lay-out sugvey made
and engaged for said purpose Engineer

How a town situated like 1111,1111 a mass
of rock over which a mere mantle of sod
has been cast, and Whose interests the Gaz-
emer is emphatic in pronouncing agricul-

tural, can afiord spicy news items, it is difii- -

cult to determine. Yet Weston is not wholly
asleep. A Rip Van Winkle of two séore
years ago would find himself bewildered
were he to return to this as his native place.
We have as yet no store which rivals Stew-
art’s last edifice, and it is doubtful Whether
any extensive canals or rail roads will at
present he blasted out of our deep-lying
granite. But we still live; and, at least,
take pride in the enterprise of our beautiful
'sister-town, Norwaik.

The recent death of Mr. Henry Nichols,
has caused deep regret in this vicinity.
His funeral was so fully attended that many
were unable to enter the church. It is not
the least reward of a useful life to have one’s
departure universally lamenwd.

By the way, it is remarkable how few are
the deaths in this town.» There is a story of
a village out West so healthy that they had
to shoot a man to start a- burying-ground.
Matters have never proceeded to that ex-
treme here, so far as we can learn, but dis-
ease and epidemic pass by on the otherside.
As might naturally be expected, .our people
take an astonishing interest in fimerals, and
crowd our little church on all such occa—
sions. Not long ago, it was understood that
a worthy citizen of a neighboring parish
was to be buried in the Cemetery here, and
that request had been made and granted for
his funeral in our church. The people as-
sembled and waited. The rain came pour-
ing down; and they waited.~ The choir re-
hearst all the dirges in the book; and still
the people waited. Anxious eyes peered

out _of the windows in'vain attempts to ‘

discern an approaching procession; and
still the people waited. An hour’had passed ;
and still the people waited. The worthy
