The mandarins in Paris are collecting val- .
uable information, and being men of no or-
dinary intelligence it is curious and interest-
ing to hear their remarks on what-they see
around them. You must know that Mr.
and Mrs. Burlingams and the natives of tho
Chinese mission have given a grandball, at
which what is called “all Paris” assembled.
' One Of the mandarius has written home an
account Of this fete, and I have been favored
with a translation Of the hicroglyphics, 'and
am permitted to publish the same. But the
gentleman Who favors the with the transla-
tion in French 'says that 5 me of the facts
and Objects conveyed w drawings, the
basis 'Of the language, the origin of these
horizontal and perpendicular lines with
which we barbarians aremade' familiar by
ten chests. The reader will observe‘thatlthc
