tinize and investigate the character and ac-

sometimes, it is found proper to criticise

useless expenditure of words, but simply rc-

STAMFORD.
The Stamford Lyceum' 1s “in” $600. Some
time since, Mr. Scofield ofi'ered to give that
amount to the LIyIceum if the following ques-I
tion was decide 1n the negative: Resolved,-
That the teachings of. the Abolitionists are
opposed to the teachings of Christ and His
Apostles as wrong is to light. Three um-
piIres were chosen, before whom the ques-
tion was debated. These were Messrs.'
SWartwout, John B. Reed and Rev. D. H
Blake. The two former are known to be
staunch democrats, while the latter is, we
believe, a republican. A decision was reach-
ed at the meeting on Tuesda evening, and
the question negatived by aMr Blake and
Mr. Reed, while l,Mr. Swarthout maintained
the affirmative. After the decision was giv-
en, Mr. Scofield announcedto the Lyceum
that he would pay the $500 to the Treasurer
of the Lyceum during the resent Week.
