brevity, pointedness and condensation in
last week’s” issue, came very opportune, and
produced a marked olfect on us. We re-
spectfully confess that we are now and then
prone to long-mindedliess, and deserve K“
your thrust at us. Your shots therefore, hit
in uncomfortable places, and caused us to
suffer as do birds when wounded. We feel
temporarily demolished, and in ruins. but
hope to rise from the debris as did Phoenix
in ancient story.

What a charming, beautiful morning was
Easter morning. Who, that felt the warm
sunshine and listened to the song of the rob-
in and the blue-bird on that occasion can

The services in bOth Episcopal Churches
here, on Easter Sunday, were joyful and
vel y impressive in character. The musical
portion, especially at the Memorial Church
of the Holy Trinity, where an elaborate
programme had been prepared, is-deserving
of comment, and would be treated at large,
were it not for our-pcrsonalconnection with
the choir of that church. ’ Thcfear of being
accused of self-adulation, precludes the pos-
sibility of extended remarks. ‘Wc will ven-
ture however to speak highly 0f the manner
in which the Psalter, Canticles, Te Deum
Laudamus, and the anthem “ Christ our
passover, &c.,” were rendered. Thanks are
due those ladies and gentlemen—members
of the two choirs, who assisted in'carryin'g
out the plans for a substantial church serv-
ice. The floral decorations were gotten up
with great taste, but less extensive and
elaborate thin on son: ‘

 

At Christ Church, the Imuschis ‘II sald- to have I

when the presents of books are given,1and
the ofi‘erings of the various classes are re-
ceived, great preparations had been made
in the way of Floral display, \and we con-
fess that we never before saw such profusion
in flowers. No less than six crosses, clothed
in the most lovely blossoms of all hues, were
seen upon the pulpit, altar and surroundings.
The Font was literally heaped with cama-
tions, roses, japonicas, heliotrOpes and cal-
las, and surmounted with a magnificent
cross built of the rarest and most costly ex-
otics. In addition to those were several va-
ses and a basket of flowers, which were ab-
solutely indiscribable.

The turnpike between Peat Swamp and
St. Paul’s Church, Norwalk, is in a orrible
condition, andEn places scarcely. passable.
We wish your town authorities might give it
attention very soon, as it is our design to
travel frequently in that direction during
the coming summer, and shall. desire to
make the transit over the road as rapidly as
possible. The Westport end will be' 1mmc-_
diately looked after.

Thieves have been rampant during the
past week. After five attempts they suc-
ceeded“ 1n entering the house of F W. Jes-
sup, 11311., through a cellar window, and
stole from him about $80 in greenbacks. N o

clue to the perpetrators. Several aggrava- .

ting instances of plundering are reported

from Greens Farms. Among the prominent

victims are a Mr. Bulkley and Mr. N. J. Al-

vord, who lost, respectively, a large quantity

of silver ware once belonging to near and

dear friends, and about $100 in currency.

We wish something might be done to stop
this system of house-breaking.

DANBURY.

The building on the corner of Main and
North streets, owned -by Mason Thorp and
occupied by Spencer 85 Hodge,_ grocers
was burned down early Wednesdaz mom-
ing. The alarm was sounded about o ’clock
when the flames were under great headway.
The fire department promptly nigonded,
but the flames had got too much 0 start
and soon left but a pile. of smOkin' ruins of
the building and its contents. he origin
of the .fire 1s not known, but is supposed to
have been the work of an incendiary.
Thorp sustains a loss of $2,000, no insur-
ance. Spencer & Hodge's loss” 19 about $1, -

000 insured.

The decision of the Court ofErrOrs,‘ 1n the
case of Taylor so. the Concert Hall com-
panhy, is that the building was placed on the
