Professor Hopper is a celebrity in the sci'
entific world, but notIof vulgar renown ; a
savant’s savun, just as there are pocts’s
poets; having from his youth devoted him-
self to studies of a pungent and dusty dry-
ness, quite unbearable by the scientific eye
and nose in general. He is the man whose
letter to Sir Charles Lyell on Natural Selecs
tion was ordered to a second reading before
the French Academy; and this letter is

date progenitor of the human race, the mon-
key, together.- “For,” asked Professor Hop-

taurant may think fit to demand. He escorts
Flora Pongcc or Blanch Ecru to the Opera,
and boasts that it costs him twenty or Iihirty
dollars an evening. He is as curious and
costly in his brushes and scents and cards
and monograms and handkerchiefs and slip-1
pcrs and underwear as ‘Miss Pongee herself.

with a man sitting behind him who costs
