THE LOVED AND LOST.
“The loved and lost!" why do We call them lost?
Because we miss them from our onward road.
, God’s unseen angel o’er our pathway crost,
Looked on us all, ind loved them the most,
Straightway relieved them of life's weary load.
They are not last; they are within the door
That shuts out loss and every hurtful thing—
With angels bright, and loved ones gone before,
In their Redeemer’s presence evermore,
And God himself their Lord, Judge and King.
And this we call loss! 0 selfish sorrow
Of selfish heartsl O we Of little faith!
Let us look round, some argument to borrow,
Why We in patiehe shonid‘ await the marrow,
That surely must succeed this night of death.
Aye, look upon this dreary, desert path,
The thorns and thistles whereso’er we turn;
What trials and what tears, what wrongs and wrath, '
What struggles and what strife the journey haihi
They have escaped from these; and lo! we mourn.
Ask the poor sailor, when the wreck is done,
W110, with his treasure, strove the' shore to reach;
While with the raging waves he battled on,
Was it not joy, where every joy seemed gone,
To see his loved ones landed on the beach 1
A poor wayfarer, leading by the hand
A little child, had halted by the well

Where, this longjourney past, they longed to dwell.
When lo! the Lord, who many mansions had,
Drew near and looked upon the sufl'ering twain.

I’ll bring him with me when I come again."
Did she make answer selfishly and wrong— .
"Nay, but the woes I feel he too must share l"

6th. Du you ever hay enny nitemarcs?
7th. Are you married and single,,or are
yu a baichelor?
8th. Du yu beicave in a inter state ? If yu
du state it. ‘
9th. What are yure private sentiments
about a rush 0v rats in the head—can it he
did successfully? .
10th. Hav yu ever committed suicide, and
if so, how did it seem to affect you?
11th. Did yu ever hey the meezies? If so,
how many?
After answering the above questions like
a man, in the coufirmatit, the Silk, little, fat,
old feller, with goold specks on, ccd I wuz
insured for life, and probably wud remain so
for a term of years. I thanked him and
smiled one of my most pensive smiles.
Extraordinary Fishing.
“ I was once on Lake Winnipisiogec, in
the winter, fishing for pickerel,” mid-Brown.
“It was awful cool and the ice was four and
ahaif feet thick. Father was with me, and,
while I was thrashing my hands to keep
them warm, I noticed that dad had an all-
flrcd bite. It was. so hard that it jerked the
old fcller through the hole in the ice, and I
thought he was a goner, but just then I re-
membered that dad was awful fond of rum
and tobacco, so I outs with a piece of nigger
head, soaked it in rum for a minute, and
then baits my hook with the weed, and drops
it through the hole the old gentleman went
into, and in less than ten minutes, gentlemen,
I had a bite, and up I hauls the old man as
fresh as ever. But. gentlemen, he kept the
tobacco.”
A prolonged whistle on the part of the
audience, as though it, the yarn was not be-
lieved.
“It’s a fact, gentlemen,” continued Brown,
“ and that reminds me of another story,
which I don’t mind tellin’. One winter I
was cossing the lake on the ice, and as I was
goin’ to a rasin’ Ihad an inch anger in. my
hand' All at once I thought I’d like to see
how thick the ice was, so I bored 8. hole, and
found that it was'about two feet. Then I
thought I’d find how deep the water was, so
I dropped my carpenter’s plumb line through
the auger hole, and hang me if I didn’t have
a savage bite before the lead touched the
bottom.
“I pulled up and landed a seven pound
pickers ." .
Another prolonged whistle, and some one
asked Brown how a seven pound fish could
get through an auger hole. .
“That‘s something I has nothin’ to do
wit ," replied Brown. “All I know is, the
fish was caught and carried home, and I ate
my share of him, and the old gentleman took
his part, I don’t bother my head about mat-
ters I don’t understand. And now, who’ll
stand the liquor ?” -

The excuse given he invariably added: “Vex y
well; but ‘don’t let it happen-again.” One
morning a married student, happening to'be
behind time was promptly interrogated as to
the cause. Slightly embarrassed, he replied:
“The truth is, sir, I had an addition to my
family this morning, and it was not conven-
ient for me to be here sooner.”l
“Very well,” replied the professor in his
quick, nervous manner, “very Well, but don’t
let it happen again.” '

animals last week, and five were also killed

—Mr. James M. McCarten, the Republi-
can candidate for Congress in the 5th New
York Congressional District; at the Novem-
ber election, has commenced proceedings
looking toward the contesting of the election
of his successful opponent, the Hon. John
Morrissey. Mr. McCarten bases his action
on the allegation that Mr. Morrissey has not.
had a legal residence in this country of suffi-
cient length of time to entitle him to hold a
seatin Congress. . ,

in the same school in Cambridge wherein
Robert Lincoln was prepared for Harvard.
