Thinking it took forever
For little children to grow;
And that seventy years of a life-time
Never could come and go.
On, I know they were happier children
Than the world again may see,
For one was my little playmate,
And one, ah! one was me!

A sad-faced man and woman,
Leigues and leagues apart,
Doing their work as best they may
With weary hand and heart;
Shrinking from winter’s tempesls,
And summer’s burning heat;
Thinking that skies were brighter
' And flowers were once more swee.;
Wondering why the Skylark
So early tries his wings; .
And if green llclds are hidden
Beyond the gate where he sir.
Feeling that time is slipping
Faster and faster away;
That a day is but as a moment,
And the years of life as a day;
Seeing the heights and places
Others have reached and won;
Sighing o’er things accomplished,
And things that are left undone;
Add yet still trusting, somehow,
In His own good time to become
Again as little children,
In their Heavenly Father’s home.
One crowding inemOries backward,
In the busy, restless mart;
One pondering on them ever,
And keeping them in her heart;
Going by their separate pathways
To the same etenity—
And one of these is my playmate,
And one, alas! is me!

KILLING AND Dnsssxxc PonLTnv.—The
following hints upon this subject may be
found useful :—In different. neighborhoods
different ways of killing and dressing poul-
try prevail, whether for the farmer’s table
or for the market. Poultry, when bled to
death, is whiter and more delicate than
when the “neck is wrung,” as the phrase
goes. Geyhir', in his book on poullrybreed-
ing, says he should advise the following
plan as the best, and as causing instant death
without apparent pain or disfigurement :
Open the beak of the few], then with a
pointed and narrow knife make an incision
at the back of the roof, which will divide
the vertebrae and cause immediate death;
after which hung'the fowl by the legs till
the bleeding ceases; then rinse the beak out
with vinegar and water. Fowls killed in
this manner keep longer and do not present
the unsightly external marks as those killed
by the ordinary method of wringing the
neck. Vthn the entrails are drawn, imme-
diately after death, and the fowl slull‘ed, as
they do in France, with paper, shavings, or
cocoanut fibres, to preserve their shape, they
will keep much longer fresh. Seine breed-
ers cram their poultry before killing, to make
them appear heavy. This is a most inj udi-
cious plan, as the undigestetbfood soon en-
ters into fermentation, and putrifuction takes
place, as is evidenced by the quantity of
greenish, putrid-looking fowls that are seen
in the markets.

A DOUBLE SURPRISE—A double surprise
came offal the domicile of Widow B , in
Hoboken, recently. A party of congenial
spirits had arranged a surprise party for the
buxbm, fun-loving widow, and had fixed
upon a certain evening for carrying out their
design. In the meantime, the widow, be--
coming lired'fiot' wearing the weeds ofLwoc,
out of rcspectto the “dear departed,” had
fixed upon the same evening to change her
colors and unite her destiny with that of
a go y and festive bachelor, from Williams-
burgh. It was intended to have the wed-
ding come off quietly and secretly, as the
widow wished to surprise her friends the
next day by appearing in her old role of“the
wife.” ‘
The bridal party, consisting of the minis-
ter, the widow and a femnlp friend, the “gay
bach" and male friend, had gathered in the
back parlor, the marriage ceremony was
about to commence, when ling-a—ling-a-ling
went the door bell, in rushed a bevy of
laughing, chatting belles and bcaux, and in
a moment the front parlor was taken pos-
session of by the jolly group. The interest-
ing ceremon ' about to take place on the Oil;-
side of the folding doors was suspended,
and the widow, comprehending the situa»
tion, resolved not to wait till morn-
ing before surprising her friends, but to
spring a grand coup upon them at once.
Sliding back the double doors, the blushir g
bride stood before her. astonished visitors,
arrayed in bridal robes, and addressed them
as follows : “My friends, I perceive that you-
intcnd this as a pleasant surprise for my on
joyment, and as one good turn deserves
another, I offer you a surprise in return. As
you cdmc in I was on the point of being
married to my friend, Mr. —, of Williams-
burg; please arrange yourselves and wit-
ness the ceremony.” It is needless to add
that the party remained, and everything
went off as merry as several marriage bells
.

many instances it takes two or three able-
bodied men, with as many women, too lock

winter building a bridge across the Missouri

Judson. He started in his business eigh-
teen vcars ago, in a very small way, and
now does a business of $200,000 per year.
This factory, which is the largest of its kind
in the country, was built during the past
year, It is 45 by 30 feet and four stories,
.wcll lighted and supplied with all modern
improvements, including an elevator which
Carries goods from the cutting-room to any
part of the building. He gives employment
to 50 hands in the factory and 400 outside,
and turns out 1,000 dOzen gloves and mittens
per month. This product includes gloves
and mittens of deer, sheep, hognnd kid skins
and of all kinds of leather used for this pur-
pose. His stock is prepared in his own lan-
nerv at Glovcrsville, which is a building 85
by '40 fest and 3 stories high. With the
ab( ve described large capacity, Mr. Judson
is still unable to supply the demand for his '
goods, and has over 2,000 dozen sold ahead.
