FAIRFIELD COUNTY ITEMS.
ROWAYTON.
The Baptist Church at Rowayton, which
has been closed for the last few weeks for
repairs and refurbishing, was re—Opcned for
Divine service. last Sabbath. During this
time the Baptist congregation worshiped
with our Methodist- brethren by their cor-
dial invitation, the two pastors supplying
the pulpit. The interior of the house has
been greatly improved and beahtificd, the
walls and woodwgrk have been thoroughly
painted and the pews grained and cushioned.

its place,‘the old lamps removed and more
modern ones substituted, :1 dilapidated
old stove has been removed and a furnace
put in its place, and a bell put into the tow-
er. Bttt what is still better, the expense of
all this has been paid, and no one is the
poorer. The present state and future pros-
pects of this church, we think, were nevu-
so encouraging as now. The subject of our
last Sabbath morning‘s discourse is our
motto, “Let us not be weary in well doing,
for in due season we shall reap it we faint

W ESTPORT.
Since your last issue an election has been
held in this place, which, on account of the
gross. frauds of the Republicans and the fact
that at least forty “Quakers” who would
have voted Democratic remained at home,
resulted in a reduction of the Democratic
majority from one hundred and thirty, last
spring, to ninety-nine, this fall. That there
should be a certainty of a. fair count, both
parties selected their heavy weights—W.
Lyons counting for one side and Thomas R.
Lees for thcothcr. We have since learned
that the “Quakers” all over the country had
either remained at home or voted on the
wrong side, and that the Democrats have
sustained another “honorable defeat,” had
discovered another “blessing in disguise,”
and that U. S. Grant will be President for
four years fi'om March next. We under-
stand that the “solid men” of West-port: are
to have a glorification next Thursday even-
ing, and if the roads are sufficiently dry will
march through the principal streets, and that
the “White Boys” have been invited to join
in the procession.
The neighbous of H. R. Treadwell will be
interested to know that he has completed a
new building near his residence. The first
story, which is of granite, well secured, will
be used as a hcnery. The second story,’
which will be handsomely finished, is intend-
ed for a billiard room.
We understand that proceedings have
been commenced against Simon Howe, Esq.,
of Bridgeport, for violating an ordinance
against fast driving on the bridge in lVest
port. The fine in such case will be $7 and
costs. '
The many friends or the Rev. John Eaton
Smith will be glad to hear that he has so
mu 3h improved in health that he was able to
preach both morning, and evening, last Sab-
bath, and that he will remain in Westport,
performing the duties of rector, and meeting
all who may wish to see him during the day
in the study in the rcar‘of the church, and
in the evening at the house of Mrs. Ogden.
In overhauling ‘and repairing the resi-
dence of D. M. Marvin, Esq., last woek, an
old relic of by-goue days was found in the
shape of an Old account board in the front
part of the house. The chalk marks, which
had been put on there a hundred years or
more ago, were very plain and bright.
The Republicans of Vestport may well
feel encouraged to work in the future, hav-
ing constantly gained on the democracy un-
til their majority is now less than one hun-
dred. Continue to work with a will and
that majority will soon be rubbed out.

WILTON. ‘
The Store of M. T. Gregory at; Cannon’s
Station was broken into on Saturday night
last and robbed of Dry Goods, Boots, Shoes,
&c., to the amount of $600. We understand
that the burglar was tracked through Nor-
walk en route apparently for New York.
We trust he will be caught and punished.
This town comes out of the contest with
28 majority for Grant—a gain of 18 over last
April. Considering the circumstances, the
result is very good.
NEW CANAAN.
The advance of civilization,with great 10-
cal improvements have not yet up set this
town politically. The Republicans made a
gain of 44 last week. Good.
011°? The Republicans of Daricu deserve
credit for hard work in the late campaign,
although they lose one vote in the aggregate
from last spring, they really gained twenty
from the enemy, that number having been
lost from their side by death and removal,
while the enemy lost none. \Vcll done Da-

STAMFORD.
' The Boys in Blue were to have a gala
night on Saturday evening last, in honor of
the great victory. Procession,illuminations,
Fire—works, bonfires, and a. good time gen-
erallv.
BETHEL.
On Thursday night last the barn of Daniel
Trowbridge was destroyed by fire. It cop-
tained about 30 tons of Hay, his farming
utensils &c. No Insurance. A good four
year old horse was so burned that out of pity
for the poor creature, he was knocked in the
head to end his sufferings. The fire was un-
doubtedly the work of an incendiary.
BRIDGEPORT.
The Republicans illuminated ’and had the
Boys in Blue out on Wednesday evening in
honor of the victory. Among the things no-
ticeable in the celebration, was in the win—
dows ofa house in the Second Ward, an in-
scription on a transparency “Grant and Col-
for for eight years.” Before the procession
arrived—the house was stoned, and windows
broken but the inscription was invulnerablc
to the rebel fire. '
Patriotic Republicans hired the City Band
to play all the afternoon of Wednesday in
front of the Sterling House in honor of the
Great: Victory.
The Main streét Banners of both parties
were blown down by the storm on Saturday
night. .-
Valcntine H. Skiff, who cut a big swell as
a tobacco‘nunufactur on Watér‘ street some
time ago, and who‘ defrauded the U. S. As-
sessor of the Third District with a. worthless
bond for about $5000 and by using fraudu-
lent stamps, was arrested in New York on
Monday last and spent Tuesday night here
in jail. On Wednesday he was taken to
New Haven by United States Marshal Gould
and was arraigned before Commissioner
Bronson. The Commissioner held him for
trial in $6,000bonds,failing to procure which
he was committed. “
Captain Wm. H. Penficld, late agent for
the Steamboat Company in this city, leaves
this part of the country for San Francisco,
0:11., on Monday next—Standard,
W111 Fairlield, Tuesday, they had a riot,
all because a German rode to the polls in a
Democratic committee wagon, and then
voted for Grant. He defended himself des-
perately from the crowd. The town was re-
deemed, this fall, at the polls, giving a major-
ity of 13 for Grant.

—Governor Reed, of Florida, has been im-
peached by the State Legislature for high
crime and misdemeanors.
——The Vicksburg Republican advertises
as follows: “Wanted immediately, 50,000
carpet-buggers to come to Mississippi and
settle. P. S.——These having trunks pre-
fen-ed.”
BEDDING.
The election passed off very quietly. One
of the sclectmcn threatened to have every
Republican dist'ranehised for voting a ticket
with a border. I-Ie quoted a good deal of
law very strongly, but no one was sufficient-
ly frightened to stop voting.
The White Boys came out on election
night to celebrate theirdcfeat. Thos. Sanford
gave 111th a splendid supper.
The Republican ladies gave 111': BOYS in
Blue. :1 grand supper on 'l‘llllFSdflY Highl-
Considering the short time they had for pre-
paration (some of them having only a few
hours” notice), they outdid themselves. Such
splendid cake as the Redding ladies are
noted for making! There were piles of it
left after the boys had finished; then all
others present were invited to partake. Car-
gill and Shaw were called out, an'd made
short speeches appropriate to the occasion.
Both speakers were heartily cheered. Mr.
Shaw, in behalf of the ladies of Redding
Ridge, gave them an invitation to a supper
Tuesday night. The ladies will be long re-
membered by the Boys.
Political cxg‘tement ran high on election
day in this closely contested town, and both
parties tried their best to get out every Illa'l,
their eflorts causing considerable amuse-
ment. Among others, the Republicans
waited upon Mr —, a man who has been
confined to his house for months, unable to
walk but who wheels himself around the
house in a chair mounted on wheels. He
was taken up, chair and all, put- iu a wagon,
and drawn to the polls. Arriving at the
building he was placed ilt his chair on the
floor and wheeled himself forward and vo-
ted. Not to be outdone the democrats went
to one of hisgneighbors, also unable to walk,
an invalid for years, picked him up and put
'him in a wagon, drove to the polls, where he
was carried into the building and up to the
box on the back of a stalwart democrat,
casting a vote for the first time in many
years. The men themselves enjoyed the
sport, and were much pleased to be able to
vote again.
Rcdding comes out Of the contest; this
time, right side up, giving 20 majority for the
Republican ticket.
DANBURY.
A meeting preparatory to the organization
of a Christian Association, was held Sunday
week, and was encouragingly attended. It.
is new to be held every Sunday morning, at
9 o’clock, in the place mentioned, and will
undoubtedly become a permanent institution
The organization takes the name of the
“Young Mens’ Christian Union,” and is in-
tended for the benefit of the young of all de-
nominations.
Rev. A. C. Hubbard Of the First Baptist
church in Cincinnatidlas accepted the call of
the Baptist church in this town, and will
arrived here on the 15th. The church have
voted him a salaryct' $2,000 per annum, and
parsonage. _
The soiree given by Co. A., of Bethel, last
Friday night, was well attendedgand'gavc
general satisfaction. -
A Bethe] man has astonished his house-
hold by raising a three pound field turnip.

13. The issues will soon be exhausted. The sales
have sometimes been half a million a day, and nearly
twenty millions have already been sold. About ten
millions more may be offered. It is not improbable
that at some time not for distant. all the remainder
of the bonds the Company can issue will be taken by
some combination of capitalists and withdrawn from
the market, except at a large advance. The long
time, the high gold interest, and the perfect security,
must make these bonds very vale able.
All the. predictions which the ofllcers of this Com-
pany have made in relation to the progress and
business success of their enterprise, or the value and
advance in the price of their securities, have been
more then confirmed, and they therefore suggest that
parties who desire to invest: in their bonds willfind it
to their advantage to do so at once.
