As in the dark days of the rebellion, it
now becomes every man who loves the Union
the Father’s made and cemented with their
blood, and for which our sons and brothers
have endured a 'new baptism of blood, to
rally around the old flag and the principles
of Liberty and justice its folds so eloquently
symbolize. Today we find arrayed against
us and the Great Soldier whose only fitting
type is Washington, all the base elements
that opposed us during the war, and all the
cruel, relentless enemies of the Union at the
South, who sought by sword and pestilence
and flame and starvation and murder, to
wreck this fair and mighty republic of ours.
Let no man whose vote may be saved to the
right,be lost sight of; with kindness and
charity for all, earnestly persuade your dem-
ocratic neighbor to a more patriotic course
of action. Let him see that every vote for
Seymour and Blair, is a vote giving joy to
all those who maimed and starved our boys
at Belle Isle, Salisbury and Andersonville.
That it is a vote for repudiation of the na-
tion’s contract, for dishonor, financial ruin

WAt the Republican caucus last Wednes-
day evening,First Selectman,Martin S. Craw,
sent in a letter declining re-elect ion, &c.
Mr. Craw has served the Town as Selectman
for eight years, and has been one of the most
flithflll, devoted and able officers the Town
has ever had, and we regret exceedingly that
we are now to be deprived of his experience
in he administration of our Town affairs.

The New Hampshire . Mechanics Exhibi-
tion commences to-day at Concord, and con_

evening.

Those enterprising Clothiers, Messrs. Com-
stock Brothers, have a new announcement
in to-day’s paper of very general interest.
The quantities of goods they dispose of con-
vince us that they sell good goods at low
prices.

The Town Election to-day (Monday) re-
sulted in no change of management at Bar-
num’s Old Well Hotel. .

We have received a copy of the first num-
ber of the New Canaan Era. It is republi-
can in politics, is neatly printed at the Adso-
cate ofiice, Stamford, and with the exception
of the local items and advs. is a reprint of

The Lecture Committee of the Y. M. C. A.
of Norwalk have provided a short course of
lectures, to be delivered previous to the 1st
of January, commencing on the 30th of this
month, intending, 'should the public favor it,
to have a second course later in the season.
This plan has been adopted that those who
intend to pass the winter in the city and
might not wish to purchase a course ticket
for a long course may avail themselves of
the first short course. The lecturers pro-
vided are all of the first order. John B.
Gough and Wendell Phillips are well known
to a Norwalk audien'ce, and need no com-
ment. Those who listened to Rev. H. M.
Gallaher’s lecture, last season, upon Ireland
and the Irish will not fail to hear him this
season upon America and the Americans,
His lecture was one of the best of last win-

an exceedingly popular speaker'and a pol-
ished, chaste writers. We are pleased to
learn that he is included in the course of
lectures. Let none of our lecture-goers fail
to secure a ticket to this talented and popu-
lar course. There will be no better one in
all New England. Our citizens will be
called upon to purchase course tickets, and
we trust they will liberally respond, afford~
ing thereby to themselves a rare intellectual
feast and aSsisting a worthy organization.
Single course tickets are offered at $2, and
double course tickets, admitting a gentle-
man and lady, $3.50. Course ticket holders
will have a preference—the selection of re-
served scats for each lecture.

 

The Diorama. _
Our town’s people have enjoyed quite. 'a
treat in the exhibition of the Lincoln Dio-
rama at Lockwood’s Hall last week. Tues-
day evening abenefit is proposed for “Old
Connecticut,” or better known “Charley
Platt” of whilom local fame. The bare
anouncement will fill the house we are sure
for his good-heartedncss and grotesque od-
dities have given him a name, and fame in
Norwalk, second to none short ofJohn Bur-
rall. . We expect to see‘ our friend Henry
Smith occupying a front seatfl'om the “joint"
interest he once held in Platt’s patent elec-
tric churn.

_ Teachers’ Institute.
A State Teachers’ Institute will beheld at
Norwalk, beginning at 2 p. m., on Mon-
day, October 12th, and closing Friday even-
ing, under the supervision of the Secretary of
the Board of Education, aided by Rev. J.
Cummings, D. D., President, and Prof. W.
N. Rice, of Wesleyan University; Prof. J. C.
Bodwell, D. D., and Rev. W. I. Gage, of
Hartford ; Prof. B. Buckham, of Waterbury ;,
Hon. D. N. Camp, of New Britain ; Rev.
EdWard L. Clark, of New Haven; H. M.
Cleveland, Esq., of Brooklyn; Profs. T. A.
Thacher, W. H. Brewer, D. C. Gilman, Mark
Bailey and Louis Bail, of Yale College ;
George A. Walton, of Boston ; N. A. Ca1-
kins, Assistant Superintendent of the
Schools of New York, and others.
All the exercises are open to the public.
Teachers and school visitors will be en-
tertained without charge.
School officers and all the friends of com-
mon schools are respectfully and earnestly
requested to circulate this notice among
teachers, and to render such aid as may seem
proper and just to facilitate their attend-
ance. It is recommended that the schools
be 'closed, in the belief that the improved
methods of teaching suggested will more
than compensate for the time given to the
teachers. School officers are cordially in-
vited to be present.
Teachers are invited to come,promptly at
the first session, and to continue through the
week. No effort will be spared to render
all the exercises both attractive and useful.
There has been of late a gratifying increase
of interest and numbers at these meetings.
Itis hoped that the well-known experience
and ability of the lecturers, with the profi‘er-
cred hospitality of the citizens of Norwalk,
will secure a large attendance.
