ESTPORT.
Ex.-Gov. Cleaveland spent Thursday evening in
Westrort. the guest of Mr. H. R. Treadwell. The
Gov. will be remembered as one of the sterling men
of our state, who from his kindness and good quali-
ties commands the respect 0 fall who know him.
Prof. Burr filled the pulpit of the Congregational
Church last Sunday Eve.
Death has again entered the household Of Senator
' Wheeler, of Saugatuck, taking his only son, an in-
fant three months old; he is thus in the short space
of three months bereft of both his wife and child.
The boy drowned at Saugatuck. Aug. 1, was named
Daniel Moran. He was 12 years and 8 months old,
and the only son of Mr. Moran, proprietor of the Mo-
ran House, corner 23d street and 1st ave., New York.
He was staying with Mr. Martin Grace, whose wife is
a cousin of Mrs. Moran’s.
and Mrs. G. went to meet him, accompanied by Dan,
who ran ahead. Arriving at the depot Mrs. G. could
not find him, and walked to the bridge in search of
him, without success. All day Sunday and Monday
a.m. his friends searched for him. Monday a.m. his
body was found by Eli Bradley, some distance below
the bridge. It is supposed that he went to the bridge,
fell in and was drowned instantly, for no one saw him
there. His body was taken to New York and buried
in Greenwood Cemetery on Tuesday last.

Elbert Olmstead will continue the business.

On M'ondsy of last week a young brakeman named ‘
Dyer was caught between two cars on the N. C. R. R.
and badly crushed.
GREENWICH.
Sunday, 2d inst, forty six‘pcrsons were received
into the M. E. Church.
A young man named John Dunsven aged about 30
years, in the employment of Lyman Mead, of Green-
wich, was run over on Sunday, Aug. 2, by the 4 A. M.
Boston Express train at Benson’s bridge. His body
was left at the Greenwich depot, minus a head and in
a mangled condition. His head has since been recov-
ered from the water.
The Ladies of Christ church hold their annual fair
in the Town Hall, on Wednesday, Aug. 12.—Advocatc.
The Americas Club held their annual Rhode Island
Clam Bake at their Club House, on Saturday 8th inst
The storm interfered somewhat with the festivities of
the occasion. '

Sixty dollars was stolen from Jim Yates recently
while asleep in a drinking saloon. That’s the way

A company has recently been organized for the
manufacture of Bishop’s patent pulleys and drill
presses. Robt. Fairchild is President and Mr. Bishop
. Superintendent; the company is now building a new
shop 80:70.
The St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Total Abstinence
and Benevolent Society is doing a good work,and new
numbers between 200 and 300 male members. They
are to hold a temperance meeting at Seeiy’s. Hall
next Sunday evening, 16th inst. which is to be ad-
dressed bv Speakers from New York.
The Italian Opera, recently given at Seely’s Hall
for the first time in Stamford, was fairly patronized,
but gave good satisfaction.
The frame of Mr. John Clark’s newhouse on Wash-
ington Avenue was raised on Tuesday. The house
will be still larger than the one he has just completed
on the same street.
Rev. Wm. C. Hoyt has commenced digging the cel-
lar~for a house on River street. '
The Universalist Church and Society h ad a‘Pic Nic
on Wednesday at Pound Rock.
Messrs. Studwell do Hobbv are pushing with unwon_
ted vigor their new Steam Saw and Planing Mill, and
it will probably be running soon.
More tramps in town at. present than there has been
for along time.
A young lad, who has been seen seeking employ-
ment in the village, appears to have taken to heart the
disappointment of not obtaining a situation and laid
himself across the track of the New York and New
Haven Rsilrood and wasrun over by the 9.26 train on
Thursday, Aug. 6. The engineer saw him on the
track, (near Seiieck's Bend.) and says he made no at_
.tempt to get ofi‘. His body, which is co nsiderably
imangled, was at the depot awaiting identification,
until 4 o'clock, at which time it was buried, The cor-
oner’s inquest exonorates the engineer and R. R. Com-
pany from all Hamel—Advocate.

—Mr. D. D. Winchester of New York,
proprietor of the Western Hotel, died very
suddenly in Gnilford Wednesday. He was
there visiting, went out to the barn to see
his horse, came in and complained of feel-
ing ill, sat down in a chair and died almost
instantly.
—The revolution in Japan has taken
another turn and the Mikado, or Pope, is
new aprisoner while the Tycoon is again
about to resume the supreme control. This
means that the liberal party has triumphed
over the old fogy conservatives who desire

cape from instant death, last week, in jump-
ing on a moving train at Cresson, Cambria
