Convention held at Syracuse, on Wednesday
last, Hon. John A. Griswold of Troy, was
unanimously nom' ated as candidate for
Governor, the in ormal ballot standing

ward, 38. Alonzo B. Cornell was nomin-
ated lieutenant-governor, Alexander Barclay
for canal commissioner, Henry B. Barnum
for state prison inspector, and Campbell H,
Young for clerk court of appeals.
—-The Republicans of Maine met in Port-
land, Wednesday and unanimously renom-
inated their popular Governor, J. L. Cham-
bcrlain.

—A special dispatch to the Boston Journal
says that Secretarv Wells, in accordance
with the act approved March 2, 1867, has for-
mally accepted the deed of gift from the
state of Connecticut, ot a tract of land situated
on the Thames river, near New London,
with a water front of not less than one mile,
to beheld by the United States for naval
purposes. The city of Charlestown having
opposed the extension of the navy yard lo-
cated there, and the state of Massachusetts
having authorized the erection of a bridge
shutting the navy yard in, the naval author-
ities are considering a recommendation to
Congress for the removal of the principal
works from Charlestown to New London
and the retention at Charlestown of such
works only that can be carried on in a limited
space, and which require no unobstructed
connection with the sea.

At a meeting of the stockholders of the
New York and New Haven Railroad Com-
pany, held in New Haven last Tuesday, it
was unanimously voted to approve of the
resolution passed by the present Legislature
authorizing an increase of their capital stock
and accepting said resolution as an amend-
ment-to their charter. The following reso-
lutions were unanimously passed :— '
Resolved, That the Board of Directors of
this company are hereby instructed not to
issue, sell or dispose of any portion of the in-
creased eapital stock of this company author-
ized b the General Assembly of this State,
at its lay Session, A. D. 1868, or to use the
proceeds thereof, except for the purposes of
relaying the road with steel rails, of erecting
new repair shops, and othernecessary build-
ings in New Haven, of increasing the amount
of the equipment, of purchasing the neces-
sary lands for depot purposes in New, York
city, and erecting thereon the necessary
buildings and of making other permanent
improvements to said railroad and its equip-
ment.
Resolved, That said directors are also here-
by instructed not to issue. sell, or dispOSe of,
any of said increased capital stock any faster
nor in greater amounts than shall be neces-
sary to meet the actual expenses which may
be incurred from time to time in carrying
out the purposes named in the foregoing res-
olution.
Resolved, That whenever the said directors
shall decide to issue any portion of said in-
creased capital stock, it shall be their duty
to apportion the same at its par value among
the stockholders of said company, in propor-
tion to the number of shares of stock held by
them respectively,provided however that no
fraction of shares shall be so issued; and in
case any stockholder shall neglect to take
and pay for such portion of said stock with-
in the time fixed by the board of dirkctors,
said directors shall be at liberty to dispose
of such‘shares not so taken, at the market
price of said stock, provided that none of
said increased capital stock shall be disposed
of at less than its par value.
Cures for Hydrophobla.
We cut from our exchanges the following
remedies for hydrophobic, which may be
worth bearing in mind at the present time :—
One remedy is as follows: Horse radish
grated and mixed with a little vinegar and
sweet oil to form a paste. , Eat of this all
that can be swallowed and kept on the stom-
ach. Apply a poultice of the same to the
wound. Repeat the eating and renew the
poultice, as often as necessary,to keep up the
stimulating effect of the horse radish, until
the spasms are relieved and the patient cured.
Another is: Take immediately warm vin-
negar or tepid water, wash the wound there-
with, and then dry it; then pour upon the
wound a few drops of hydrochloric acid,
because mineral acids destroy the poison of
the saliva, by which means the latter is non-
tralized. . ‘
Another receipt is : Mix one pound ofcom-
mon salt in a quart of water, then bathe
with and squeeze the wound with the same
one hour, then bind a little more salt on the
wound for 12 hours. The author of this
receipt“ was bi six times by mad dogs,
and always cure imsclfby the above mix-
ture, and .otfers to suffer himself to be bitten
by any mad dog in order to convince man-
kind that what he offered was a real truth,
which numbers could testify.”

Spring meeting, 1813, he ran second to Slico, for a
sweepstakes of twenty guineas each, two m' es, heat-
ing Geranium, Langold, Nowbracy, Otterin ton and

for the constitution stakes of twenl y guineas eac ,

Otterington and Knight Emmi. At Doncaster he won
a sweepstakes of fifty guincas each, (Six subscribers),
beating Algernon. Next day he won the £100 purse,
at two heats, two miles, beating I’lowboy. Mr. Gar-
forth’s b. 1'. by Sancho, Lord Belliaven’s p. c. by Mas-
‘ter Robert, and Diabolus. Tins was casrly won. In
the York . s )l‘lllg meeting, 1814, Cotton ran second to
Cannon Ball for the constitution stakes of twenty
wuineas each, for all ages, one mile and a quarter,

Viscount. At Newcastle he ran a dead With X Y Z for
the Northumberland stakes of twenty-five guineas,
for all ages, two miles and 0. quarter, (six subscribers)
beating Agnes Sorrel, Labo, After the dead heat,
Cotton walked over. In the York August meeting he
won another of the great subscription purses of £277,
105, four miles, (thirteen subscribers), beating Skip.
Next day he won another of the great subscription
purses of £277. 109, four miles, bcatmg Epperston and
Woodman. At Doncastcr Catton won the Fitzwillinm
stakes of ten guineas eac , with 20 guincas added, (7
subscribers), eating Tramp, Cossack, Ranger and
Fairville. He also won the stakes of ten guincns, with
twcnt giiincas added, -four miles, (thirteen subscri-
bers heating Fugitive and Mr. T. Dnncombe’s b. c.
by hance; this was easily won. At York spring
meeting, 1815, Catton won the gold cup, valuenlbtl
guineas, with thirty ineas in specie, three miles,
beating Rosanne, Mr. arforth’s g. f. by Hamblctoni-
and, Marciano: won iu.a cantor. Next day he won
the constitution stakes of twenty guinens each (four-

Silk, Twist, Linen or Cotton Thread, and sewing with
equal facility the very finest and coarsest materials,
and anythin" between the two extremes, in the most
beautifullund substantial manner. Its attachments for
Hcimiiing, Braiding, Cording, Tucking, Quilting, Fell-
ing, Trimming, Binding, etc., are novel and practical,
and have been inventedo and adjusted especially for
this Machine.
New designs of the Unique, Useful and Popular
Fouling Tops and Cabinet Cases, peculiar to the Ma-
chines manufactured by this Company, bave been pre-
pared for inclosing the new Machine. These are got-
ten up in every variety of wood, such as Black Walnut,
Mahognany, Rosewood, and the like, and from the
plaincst to the most: elaborate pattern and finish—the
machines themselves being more or less highly orna-
mented to correspond with the Tables or Cabinets for
