THE hour’s SPRING.

1 saw iler coming from the east,
Her garments all with sun beams dyed;
A roscatc hue suffused her face, _

At her approach keen wintry blasts

Were calmed, to fan her lovely cheeks

Her balmy breath fell warm on earth

Each tiny blade of grass appeared,
By Time’s light lingers duly spread;

Weaving a carpet bright as fair

, To tempt her free and airy tread.

Though uoiselessly she swept along.
The lowllcst flower well knew her nigh,
And raised its grateful, drooping head

The foliage sprang on bush and tree,
A safe retreat for wild birds nests;
Where they could sing their sweetest lays

The sky’s dark curtains were wrought o‘er
With golden stars, all sparkling bright,
And here and there soft fleeey clouds,
Like snow-capped hills, so pure and white.

I sorrowed that she must depart,

waist. No better design for a bathing drcss
has ever been invented than that of trousers

loose- and and plaitcd into a wide, tight fit-
ting- balld at the waist. Such a dress is casi-
ly made, inexpensive, and will last for years

as; the fashion in bathing dresses is, not lia-

ble to change. Every year ol'coursc, a new
capricc is announced ; sometimes it is linen,
and at other times “scarlet” bathing dresses
that are the rage, or the neutral shades of
but? are wonderfully braided ill high colors
and elaborate. patterns. Neither of these
styles are suitable for bathing pullposcs ; lin-
en is cold and clings to the form, high-col-

ored stuffs are too striking for good taste,

and elaborate trimmings are entirely lost.
An old garden hat- tide down at the sides is
the best covering for the head, better and
'more becoming than a cap of oiled silk,
though this is not unfrcquently worn under-
neath the other by ladies who wish to pre-
serve their hair from contact with salt wa-
ter. A serge or all-woe] flannel is the best
material for a bathing dress.

sense a mistake to use the name working-
mcu to designate a part, and really- a small
part, of those who earn their own living.

lory of the performances of the latter horse is given
below, to which special attention of all lovers of good
stock is invited:—

In the York August meeting, 1312, he won a sweep-

Eurgalns, Zigzag, and Don Carlos. In the York
Spring meeting, 1813,1ie ran second to Siigo, for a
sweepstakes of twenty guincas each, two miles, beat-
ing Ccranium,Langold, Nowbracy, Otterinwton and
Casloll‘. At the same meeting he ran secontr to Sligo
for the constitution stakes of twenty guiucas each,
heating Geranium, Otterington, Fugitive, Salamanca,

Prime Mini. or. Next day he won £70 at two trials,

t‘orih’s b. f. by Sancho, Lord Belhnven’s D. c. by Mas-

the York spring meeting, 1814, Catton ran second to
Cannon Ball for the constitution stakes of twenty
guineas each for all ages, one mile and a quarter,
beating Mr. eruou’s b. c. Newcastle, Catherine and
Viscount. At Newcastle he ran a dead with x Y Z for
the Northumbcrlaud stakes of twenty-ti! guincas,
for all ages, two miles and a quarter, (six bscribers)
beating Agnes Sorrel, Labo, After the dead heat,
Catton walked over. In the York August meeting he
won another of the great subscription purses of £277,
10s, four miles, (thirteensubseribcrs), beating Skip.
Next day he won another of the great subscription
purses of £217. 10s, four mllcs, beating Eppcrston and
Woodman. At Doncaster Cotton Won the Fitzwilliam
stakes of ,teu guineas each, with 20 guineas added, (7
subscribers), beating Tramp, Cossack, Ranger and
Fairvillc. lie also won the stakes of ten gniucas, with
twcnt guineas added, four miles, (thirteen subscri-
bers) beating Fugitive and Mr. T. Duueombe’s b. c.
by C once; this was easily won. At York spring
meeting, 1815, Catton won the gold cup, value. 15.0
guineas, with thirty guineas in specie, three miles,
beating Rosanne, Mr. Garforth’s g. f. by IIalnbletoni-
and, Marciuna: won in a cantor. Next day he won
the constitution stakes of twenty gnineas each (four.
teen subscribers,) beatinngilliam, Miss Cannon, (sis-
tcr to Cannon ball). At ork August meeting, he won
a subscription of twen five guineas, two miles, (11
subscribers), beating‘Al lsidora and Viscount. lie all.

gold cup, value, 100 guineas and upwards, beating Ev-
