«The construction of the railroad between
Stamford and New Canaan is rapidly ap-
proaching completion. The Rails for the
Road are now being unladen com the barges
at Stamford. Ere long the residents of New
Canaan will hail the event when they can
breakfast at their homes and be in New
York attending to business before 10 o’clock
NEW CANAAN.
We congratulate our New Canaan friends, as well as
our own citizens upon the proswct of again having
established regular and reliable communication be-
tween the two villages. Kr. W. E. Wilcox, of the
Union Livery Stables, South Norwalk, has this week
commenced running a stage and Express Line, leaving
New Canaan morning and afternoon and returning
noon and night. Ifuch inconvenience has been expe-
lienced since the withdrawal of the old line and we
trust that liberal patronage will be bestowed upon the
new enterpfiu, and the line he thus made permanent.
Mr. E. J. Richards, of New Canaan, has erected on
his farm a large milk house, and is preparing to carry
on an extensive milk business the coming summer.
The new railroad, it is expected,wlll scrveto establish
in the vicinity a large milk trade with New York.

Rosanna-The Town clerk’s onlce, at Greenwich,
- - was entered on Friday evening last, while Gideon
Close, Esq" the worthy official, was attending a leo-
tare at the academy, and robbed of about 9800 in mon-
ey besides agold watch. The iron safes were opened,
and many valuable papers contained therein, were
torn and scattered about. The robbery was not dis-.
covered. until the following morning. Some swam;
pitched rogu'eik'om the city is supposed tohevehad
his eye upon the prospective plunder for some time
past, and kept a strict watch upon Mr. Ciose's move-
ments, and selected the opportunity before the safe
keys were carried od‘ for the night, of accomplishing
the robbery. .
Real estate sales and improvements. D. J. Ste-
ward, Esq" has sold his mansion and about two ac'res
ofground to Edward Slauson, Esq., for $18,000. Jo-
seph A. Jackson, Esq.. one ofthe star members of the
Americas Club, has purchased the house and grounds
near the depot, known as the David Head property,
from Edward Kenny, lfaq., for 81,500. The house in
nearly new and commands a fine view of the harbor.

operations in the matter of cutting a canal km the
. harbor to a point near the "railroad depot, one hun-
dred feet wide, and of sufllcient depth to admit of'
steamers and other vessels of moderate draught navi-
gating the same, has been commenced. This canal
will prove of vast importance to the future prosperity
of Stamford. Vessels laden with coal, brick, lime,
to. will be enabled to discharge their cargoes at the
foot of the new street, and thereby save a great deal
9 f expense in carting. '
. An election for Borough officers will be held on
Monday next, May 4th. . -
A great change has taken place in that section of
Itamford known as Dublin. A number of Catholic
priests have been holding protracted meetings with
great and good ellbct. The cause of Temperance has
been earnestly advocated by them, and the result has
teen very gratifying. _ Upwards of two hundred per-
: men and .women, including many who have
been considered hard characters, have joined the
IlUperanca society; five dealers Ofthe “creatur” have

a bloody assault on Patrick Dundan, near the depot.

WLast Thursday noon, a span of horses
belonging to Mr. Henry Olmstead, of North
Wilton. became frightened while a. load of
lumber was being put on the wagon in Wa-
ter street, and run away, crossing the bridge
and tearing up Main street “like mad,” fetch-
ing up somwhere in Wilton. In their course
they run into John Carmody’s carman wag-
on, and narrowly escaped smashing up sev-
eral other vehicles. Fortunately no person
was injured.
