‘ Mr. George P. Putnam paid as a flying vis-
it last week. Since he was last atnong us he
has t'csuseitated and established on a sure
feeling his famous Monthly. Every page of
the Magazine is original and every litte paid
for. He often pays front $200 to $300 for an
article. He has now 285 manuscripts await-
ing the verdict of the editor; as each num-
ber contains but about ten, it will be seen
how abundant the supply. Mrs. G. P. Put-
nam and daughter Itave spent the winter in
Florida. Mr. Bishop Putnam, son of the
Publisher, went to Japan in the fall, to facili-
tate the introduction of American School

tions to one or two interesting articles which

DARIEN.
A very interesting temperance meeting was
held at Mansfield Hall on “Tednesdsy even-
ing, itIarcit 25th. Rev. Mr. Alvord was elect-
ed chairman, and after singing, and prayer
by the Rev. Geo. T. Fuller, the audience lis-
tened to a very interesting address by Mr. M.
W.’Pogson, of M. Y. The volunteers glee
club, composed of members of the Presbyte-
rian,».’\[ethodist and Congregational choirs,
under the direction of Mr. Merriam of South
Norwalk, san g several songs and hymns du-
ring the evening which were highly appre-
ciated by the meeting. An intermission oc~
curred about 9 o’clock during which refresh-
ments were partaken of, and a roll signed for
a temperance society by forty-one persons,—
a most: auspicious beginittg for a society of
this character. Since the meeting, tltc hall
itt which it was held has been removed.

RIDGEFIELD.
Rev. Francis T. Russell, now preaching itt
Ridgefteld, has received a unanimous call
from St. John‘s Church, Waterbury, to be-
come associate Rector of that parish. The
American says :—
“Prof. Russell was fomnerly rector of St
Mark‘s church, New Britain, which lte left to
accept the professorship of elocution at Ho-
bart Free College, Ge eva. The. location not
agreeing with his health he resigned and re-
turned to this diocese. He is now professor
of elocution in Trinity College,and the Berke-
ly ' Divinity School at Middletown, which
positions he will probably continue to fill, as
they will not interfere with his parochial du-
ties. He is a man of superior abilities and is
much beloved by all who know him. We
congratulate the parish on {having with ‘so
much unanimity, tnade so excellent a choice.”

The schooner C. N. “Talcott', which left

ashore at Lloyd‘s harbor, threw overboard,

two weeks behind titnc.

Poole, aged about 70 years, walked nearly
ten miles, to see and hear Gen. Sickles.
,Mr. Abel B. Nichols, formerly a resident
of Bridgeport, died at Liberty, Va, Febuary
16th. His age was 70 years.

called the Odorless Rubber Company has
been formed itt this city, with Mr. EM. Chaf-
fee of Providccne, President, and Mr. W. H.
H. \Villiants, Secretary. Their goods will
be mauufhctured under E. L. Simpson‘s and
E. M. Cltatl'ee’s patents.
Gen. Stewart L. Woodford addressed a
Republican tnectittg on Saturday evening.
A fire occurred in the cemetery last week,
caused by sparks flying from the stone on
which a stone cutter was at work. The
grass iii the yard was very high and dry and
shrubbery was burned, the grave stones
blackened and the posts charred. Above
fifty men, women and children worked hard
to eitinguish the flames. The surrounding
buildings had a narrow escape from destruc-
tion.

DIED SUDDENLv.—-MissEliza Mott, sister of
Mrs. Huntphreys, widow of the late Rev. Hec~
tor Huntphreys, Principal of St. John’s Col-
lege, died suddenly at: her sister’s residence,
on N ortlt-East street, near the Naval Acad-
cnty, on Monday night last. She had been
complaining, we learn for sortie days, but
went about as usual, and retired as usual on
the above named night without exciting the
shghtest apprehension with regard to her,
and in the morning she was found dead. She
was a highly accomplished lady, and possess-
ed an amiable and kind disposition, and was
regarded with high esteem.
@We find the above in. the Annapolis
(Md) Gazette. Miss Mott was a native of
Norwalk, and her many friends in this vicin-
ity will regret to hear of her disease.
