When the call for troops came in 1861, when Massachusetts‘ blood had made red the pavements of Baltimore, when every body in the West rose up to go, Missisissippi there lived an oldwidow wo- man. Her husband was in his grave. She had but one child in the world, a noble boy, sixteen years of age. She took him from the plough and the borrow, and said to him: .
