A hasty trip into this wide awake neighn
borhood, showed that the sudden advent of
spring has not caught the people napping.
Messrs. Thames «8:. Rile 'are closing out
.their Stock of canned tomatoes, and prepar-
ing for a more vigorous onslaught upon this
popular fruit the coming season. They are
about to erect‘n large steam boiler, and will
do their canning “by steam" hereafter.
Mr. Rife is putting tip an imposing addi-
‘ tiou to his house which contributes not a lit-
ile to the beauty of the “church block."
The packet J ulia iras at last burst from her
icy moorings and will make her first trip this
(Tuesday) eveniurr.
Capt. Lockwood is building a house upon
one of the lots which were sold attire late
auction. Several other new houses are till-

Mr. Pennoyer’s school has an exhibition
this week, on Wednesday and Thursday
evenings.
Mr. Stephen Miller has sold hisnew house
on Ivy Point, to a gentleman from Ridgetield.
Mr. D. Fallon hits also sold his house near
the Rowaytnn depot to a Mr. Mansfield of
Danbury.
Mr. L. H. Bigelow now contemplates erect-
ing an entirely new house, on his new farm
at Middle Five Mile River. He succeeds to
Wm. B. Bradbury, deceased. in the music
publishing business, in partnership with Mr.
Sylvester Main, who was also associated with
Mr. Bradburry.
Messrs. Pardec & Main have purchased a
lot of Mr. Theo. Prince in the same neigh-
borhood for the erection of a new shirt fac-
tory. ,
‘Mr.‘Piii.ce is reported to be slowly recov-
ering from the accident which has confined
him a large part of the winter.
A little boy four years of age, son of Mr.
Payne, living in Mr. Wilson’s shoe-house,
was scalded to death on Tuesday last by
falling into a boiler containing about two
quarts of hot water. He lived twenty-one
hours after the accident.
Strangers might infer from the tenor of
certain items which have .frOm time to time
found thr ir way to the public car, that the
pet p‘e of Rowayton are at endless disagree-
ment aruong themselves. But nothing can
be further from the truth. The majority of
the peopleare pcaceable, order-loving and
on the best of terms with each other. This
is attested by the large sociables, the prayer-
meeiings and the weekly congregations
which bring the people face to face continu-
ally, and strongly unite their smpathies and
interests. ' ~
Sonnets DEATH m Damon—James Law,
about 29 years of age, (a workman on the
New York & New Haven Railroad), was ta-
ken, on Wednesday night last, with a severe
pain in the head, called on a physician but
could obtain no relief, and died about 3 0’-
clock Thursday moraine. He served honor-
ably in Co. C. 2811i Reg‘t. Conn. Vols—Ad-

A literary association has been organized
by the young men of the place, under the
auspices of the Greenwich Academy by the
name of “The Greenwich Debating Society.”
Its meetings are held every Friday evening.
Edward Kearney has solda house and out-
buildings with about two acres oi land, situa-
ted on Railroad Avenue, near the depot, to
Joseph A. Jackson, of NY. City, for $7,500.
Workmen are now engaged in digging the
foundation for a new store on Main street,
which is to be erected by Mr. Wm. Vorhis.
Henry W. Howard is putting up a fine
house about half a mile north of the village,
neat-the North Street road.‘ He expects to

Herman H. Mead nus begun the founda-
tion of a new house at Cos Cob, opposite the

The steamer Nelly White, of the Norwalk
litre, is to stop at Greenwich, each way, for a
short time to accommodate the people until
the John Romer can resume her place on
the- route.
Stamford.
Capt. Shufeldt's lecture, for the benefit of
the poor of Stamford, last week Monday
evening, was largely attended, the audience
representing “the wealth and intelligence of
Stamford." "'
Impeachment was’diseussed in the Lyceum
last Tuesday evening. Rev. Mr. Comatock
and 'l‘roombly and Lawyer Olmstead were
on the negative side, and Messrs. Wheeler,
Ritch, Daskam and Fessenden on the affirm-
ative.
The Burnside Guards of South Norwalk,
are to give an entertainment of Military
Tableaux, at Seeley’s Hall, Thursday even-
ing next.
The first Republican rally of the campaign
was announced for Monday evening, 16th.—
Ex-Gov. Hawley and Cyrus Northrop were

A complimentary concert to Mr. M. L.
Dunn is to be given at the Presbyterian
church, Thursday evening.

In the case of James S. Taylor as. the Dan-
burv Hall Company, for the possession 01
Concert Hall, tried at Bridgeport, last week,
before the superior court, the company hav-
ing admitted all the facts claimed by the
plaintiff, Judge Pardee directed the jury to
return a verdict for the defendants, which
was accordingly done. The managers are
now going to paint and otherwise improve
the building. . ‘
The Democratic Senatorial and Probate
convention which took place last Wednes-
day, put up for Senator L. N. Blydenburgh,
of Sherman, a “youth - to fortune and fame
unknown,” and forJudge of Probate, Waters
F. Olmstead, of Danbury. ‘
The old Union guuwas got out last Wed-
nesday afternoon, to celebrate the New
Hampshire victory. It‘spoke well, and loud.
We shall hope to be able to bring it. out soon
again—say in about a mouth—not. for Dan-
buryiilorie. but for the state.
Mrs. Wallace Dickens died suddenly on
Wednesday of congestion of the liver, while
she was undergoing the operation of the re-
moval Of all abscess from her breast.
Last Wednesday night, Rev. V. W. Bene-
dict, Mill Plain, was "surprised" by his par-
ishioners, who left a sum of money and a
handsome present for his wife—fiferwm'an.
Mr. Leroy Taylor, formerly of the Pahqui-
cque Hotel, will, on the hit. of April, take
charge of the New Canaan Hotel.

Whe understand on enquiry that the pros-
pects now are that there will be considerable
building going on in this city and vicinity
this spring the coming summer.
Mr. Gross ey, formerly of the American
Water Proof Corupnny,is about to start busi-
ness at the Pequonnoek Mills, North Bridge-
port.
The new Catholic church on Golden Hill
will be opened on Thursday, the 17th inet.,
for Divine service.
Mrs. Ira Green, while comitrg out of St.
John’s Church Friday evening slipped on the
ice and broke one of the small bones of one
of her ankles.
The Bridgeport light house, was consider-
ably damaged by the immense mass of float-
ing ice, in the sound Sunday, March 8. The
lighters are badly bent, and it will cost quite
a sum to right matters. ,
—A large fore and aft schooner is sunk in
Long Island Sound. Her top masts are
about twenty feet out of water, with top sails
set. The Norwalk Light house bears about
five miles northwest from her. She is direct-
ly in the track of the Sound steamers.
The schooner Ida A. Jayne arrived from
the West Indies with a cargo of sugar and
molasses on Friday night last.
We learn that P. T. Barnum intends to
build this sumruer, several houses in the vi-
cinity oi the Seaside Park, for himself and
his daughters.
A gentleman residing in East Bridgeport,
while passing Washington Park latent night
was stopped by a tramp, who wanted to
look at the gentleman‘s watch. The belig-
erent attitude of the party attacked caused
the villain to skedadle. '

Philadelphia, are to Vsist Bridgeport, at the
next Fire Department Parade.

was removing the snow from the porch of
his house, last Tuesday, he fell to the ground
breaking his hip.
—The Trinity Society of Newtown, have
voted to build a new Church of stone. It will
cost about $40,000. -
—A shocking accident took place in Brook-
field. . A man named Henry Lake, was
caught in the machinery of Holley’s factory,
and had a leg and arm literally crushed.
The leg had to be amputated immediately.
Lake is lying in a precarious condition.

A By-Law in Relation to Fast
Driving.
Be it ordained by the Warden and Burgesses
of the Borough of Norwalk:
That it shall not be lawful for any person
to ride, or drive any horse, or horses, or oth-
er aliimal, through, or in any part of any
public street, or highway within the fire lim-
its of the said Borough, at a greater speed
than at the rate of 5 miles per hour; and any
person who shall violate this By—Law, shall
forfeit and pay to the Treasurer of the Bor-
ough, for the use 9f the Borough, the sum of
Seven Dollars for each and every offence.
The above B’Law was passed by the
Court of Burgesses, Feb. 24th, 1868, and was
ratified at a Special Borough Meeting, held
in the Town Hall, Feb. 28th, 1868.
