The Ladies Aid Society of the Greens-
tarms Church, met at the residence of Chas.
Sherwood, on Wednesday last, where they
held an Oyster Supper, the object being for
the purpose of raising funds to assist them
in carrying out their charitable designs.

Mr. Henry Taylor of Compo, had a sow of
the Chester White breed, which recently
gave birth to 16 pigs. Fourteen were torrnd
frozen to death next morning.
Stamford.
Rev. Mr. Huntington’sleeture on the His-
trry of Stamford, was postponed, aid is to
he delivered March 3d. The question, “Is
universal suffrage expedient at present,” is
being discussed in the Lyceum.
Tire funeral services of Mrs. L. L. G. Whit-
ney and her sister Miss Webb, were held in
the Congregational church, on Monday after-
noon at 2 o‘clock, Rev. Mr. Thurston rreaelrel
a wry feeling discourse on‘thc occasion, and
a large number of the friends and relations
of the deceased were present. Their rc-
rnains were laid side by side in the Presby-V
tcrian burying ground on North street. Mr.
Whitney has the entire sympathy of the
community in this double affliction.
We hear it rumored that the Presbyterian
Society IDlL‘lld to enlarge their church edifice
during the coming Summer.
The Temperance meeting held on Monday
evening last, was fairly attended, and a good

The democratic Senatorial Convention for
the 11th district is to meet at the Turner
House March 11th.
The ball of the season-one of surpassing
brilliancy,—came ofl' attire Turner House,
2lst ult. Simeon Leland and daughter, of
the Metropolitan Hotel, N. Y., were present.
The addition to St. James’ Church is now
complete, and the edifice is very beautiful.—
Five windows, acute angled in shape, are set
in the slope of the arched ceiling, and repre-
seut‘The Ascension," with our Saviour as
the central figure. Below these, is a large
window, with a figure of Christ in the centre,
a cross upon one side, and a ltingly mono-
gram on the other. On the cast sitie‘ol the
church, is first, a window erected as a tribute
to the Rev. Dr. Haw-fey. This has three
beautiful scenes in the life of the Redeemer.
Adjoining this is a memorial window from
Mr. LeRoy Ferry and lady, of New York,
very beautiful in design. Beyond this is
what is called an “old countryman" window,
put up by the Englisb,Irisb, Scotch and Can-
adians of the parish. The four emblemsxof
the different countries form a square around
which are the rose, shamrock, etc. At the
opposite side of the chancel are three more
windows, equally grand in conception, and
equally true in execution. New seats have
been put in the church.
The month of February has been signal-
ed irl Danbul'y by its large number of balls,
surprise, masquerade, leap year, and Other
parties. .
Thursday afternoon a farmer‘s dog, quiet-
ly leaped through one of the large panes of

'ing particulars of the Bethel Bank diflicultyl:
The First National Bank of Bethel, was
closed on Monday the 19th inst, after an ex—
amination of its affairs by A. B. Mygatt, Bank
Examiner, who still has charge of the same.
The bank has been considered a weak insti-
tution for some time, and the Comptroller
was informed of its condition last September
by Mr. Mygatt, who then examined its affairs
and reported the result. The Comptroller
thereupon advised the bank of” his informa-
tion regarding its condition, and directed the
suspension of dividends. The carrse of the
trouble with this bank has been in its loans
to Nathan See ey an extensive hat manufac-
turer at'Bethel, whose transactions composed
the principal part of the business of the bank.
His liability to the bank, according to its
books,is' about $25,000. It also appears that
the Cashier, Wm. A. Judd, has given his
checks from time to time to the Paquuioqne
Bank of Danbury, to protect the checks of
Scelcy to the antenatal $35,000. This tran-
saction was made without the knowledge or
authority of the President and Board of Di-
rectors; also the Cashier lras endorsed as
Cashier, a note given by Seeley of $7,000
which is held by the PaquuioqucBank. See-
ley lras failed with large liabilities, estimated
at $150,000 and probably will not pay 25 per
cent.
It does not appear that the Cashier was to
receive any advantage from his proceedings,
He made,
however, no account of the checks given on
the books of his bank, nor included them in'
any of his sworn statements of the affairs of
the Bank to the Comptroller of the Currency
and thus violated the 55th section of the Na-
tiorral Cusrency Act. He has been accord-
ingly arrested to await the action ofthe Ulri-
ted States District Attorney. The capital of
the bank is $60,000. The liabilities of Na-
than Sccley'and the Cashier‘s checks and
~ note, amount to about $75,000.
The batik having failed to reticent its notes
will pass into the hands of a receiver, to be
appointed by the Comptroller of the Our-
rency. In the mean time, the bank is in
charge of Mr. Mygatt, who will soon be able
to give a detailed statement of its affairs.
The event of the bank’s failure and that of
Mr. Scelcy, under all the circumstances, is a
crushing calamity to Bethe), and creates .
lunch distress and excitement in the corn-
urunity. ‘
Mr. Wm. A. Judd, Cashier of the Bethel
National Bank, was taken before Commis-
sioner Blackman, of New Haven, last week
and put under $10,000 bonds to secure his
appearance for trial on the 26th of February.
Much sympathy is expressed for Mr. Judd,
by his fellow citizens, who offered any
amount of bail, that. should be demanded.
Mr. Judd himselfsent for Commissioner My-
gatt, making a clear statement of the case.
The Cashier has made nothing by the failure
and seems to have been used as a tool for
other parties.

odist Church, in Bethe], recently received a
donation of over $100 from his friends.

Quite a large party of Bridgeporters are so
journeying in Europe namely: Mr. Thomas
Hawley, wife and daughter; Mr. Edward
Sterling and'wife, are at present at Florence.
They left the United States last July, and
have spent considerable time, witnessing the
volcanic eruptions. of Mount Vesuvius. The
party will remain in Europe until next Fall.
The Strzrtlord Light Ship has returned to
itsmooring, having been found by the Rev-
enue Cutter six miles to the eastward, and
towed back to its legitimate field of opera
tions by the steamer.
A beautiful gold-lined srlver service, con-
sisting of a pitcher, salver, five goblets, slop
bo'iwl and deca‘lnters, has been made for Steam
Fire Engine Co. Excelsior NO. 5, of this city,
which isto be presented to the Good Intent

One hundred dollars for the Bethesda Mis-
sion Library was raised by subscription, Sun-
day, 23d all.
John Maguire, while attempting to walk
on the ice from EastBridgeporttothe steam-
boat dock, fell into the river and just escaped
death. He was in the water three-quarters
of an hour and was finally saved by Charles
M. and Henry N. Kelly of the sloop Marga-
ret Kennedy.
Engineers are surveying for a double track
for the N. Y. 6.: N. H. R. R. Go, from the old
Housatouic depot to East‘ Bridgeport.
Two hundred and twenty-live persons
were furnished with soup at the Bridgeport
soup house, last week. _ '
Mr. Barnum has presented the petition of
Munson Hawley and others, of Bridgeport,
district. of Fairfield, praying for an npproprf-
ation for the construction 0sz building to be
used, as acustom house and post ofilcc at
Bridgeport.
Colonel Wallace’s billiard saloon, next
to the postofliee, in Bridgeport, was damaged
by fire and water, Thursday night, to the
amount of a few hundred dollars.
The annual meeting ot the stockholders of
the Housatonic railroad, was held last Fri-
