The Railroad Company have bought the
iron for their road and contracted for asteatn
engine: The town officials, with their usual
promptness have already secured thc cash

negotiate. This speaks well for the credit of
the town, and the confidence of monied men
in' the able management of affairs by the
town officials. '

in Minimum—Dec. 191b, 1866, there was
a wedding in our‘d’e'a'r~ old church at Wilton.
It was like all such ceremonies, a floating in
and out of bridal garments and bridal guests.
The beautiful bridesmaid,_with her get tle
dignity, and grace, drew all eyes upon her,
and long after the fair sight had passed hway,
her image came back as an impersonation or
youthful loveliness. Eighteen summers had
oasscd over her. With loving friends, and
pleasant "surroundings, her future opened
bright and beckoning. A face like hers, com-
bined as it was with pleasing manners, and a
cultivated mind, must win admiration and
love. How would she choose in the tempt~
ing pathsbefore her? The months I'Oiitd
on until May~ came, and then in the samoold
church, on the Sabbath day, there was an-
other gathering. The disciples of the Lord
Jesus Christ had come to Ct lcbrate his dying
love at the Communion Table. There was
a silence—and then the Pastor bid the candi-
dates for admission to the Church present
themselves The beautiful bridesmaid—now
in simple attire—came forward and meekly
confessing her faith in Christ, took upon her—
self the holy covenant vows, which openly
espoused her to the Church.
Her choice‘ was made. In the “dew of
youth" she consecrated herself to a glorious
service. That yearis not yet complete, ’only
February has come, but there is another
gathering in the old church. Heavy foot-
steps are coming up the aisle as it they bore
an unwilling burden, and right before the al-.
tar, where twice before this fair girl has stood,
a coffin is set down. The flowers are more
abundant than at the bridal—they are fit em—
blems of a fleeting treasure—for the brides-
maid has passed away from earth. The
daughter, the sister, the friend, is silent for-
ever. ' . . '
To die so early, so well beloved, so mourn-
ed ! The earthly picture is dark, but what
saith the teachings of that faith, which is
heavenly and fullof light 13,, ,
So early relenSed from the bondage of sin.
So soon welcomed in Heaven as one redeem-
ed by the preciOusl' blood of Christ. Her
mansion was ready; beyond the reach of sin
and sorrow, she “waits on the Lor ,” go-
ing on from strength to strength, fulfilling
his will. May these thoughts comfort'thosc
who mourn, making them truly thankful
that God lentvthem such a treasure,’ Her
mission on earth was ended, and there will
some a joy in believing that it is well with
fur whom they so dearly loved.

The MfE. Church, under the pastoral care
of Rev. Wm. R. Websterhas been for the
last month blessed with a gracious outpour-
ing of the holy spirit; upwards of forty have
been. brought toa saving knowledge of the
truth ; among them are some that have been
foremost in the servicp of the evil one. The
work is still progressing and greater things

Dr. Shufeldt’s lecture on China was largely
attended last Tuesday evening. Rev. A. N.
Benedict lectures on Temperance, Monday
evening, Feb. 24. Rev. E. B. Huntington is
announced to deliver a lecture on a local sub-

The Cecilian Club are to give a Concert
for the benefit of the Lyceum, on Tuesday

The Organ conce't given on Monday eve-
ning last, by Messrs. Charles W. Smith and

Greenwich.
According to the returns from the various
- School Districts, the total number of chil-
dren between the ages of 4 and 16 years in
this town is 2028. In the Meeting-House
School District, the number is 456—the same
as last year. , »
Mr. Joseph S. Hobby of Banksville, has
sold his farm to Mr. Joseph H. Dudley, of
New York city, who contemplates moving»
hither in the coming Spring.
The new arrangements, by which the mails

joyed, while on the other hand, the good na-

than three weeks Isaac Rhodes, of Weston,
has buried six children. All dying with the
Dipihel‘iu. We give their names and ages in
the order they died :—Alice C., 9; Mary Ann,
16; Ellen, 17; George, 19; Dennis, 6; Seth,
4. -
The two last were buried in one grave,
having died within a few hours of each other.
Mr. Rhodes is a poor man, and his singular
affliction has created much sympathy and se-
cures for him in his neighborhood, much aid.

There have also been six other deaths frotn
this terrible malady, as follows:——Mary An-
drews, danghter of David L. Coley, died 2nd
of Dec, age of ‘10 years; Henry B. Lock-
wood, 17lh Dec, age 23; a child of Stephen
Raymond, 3rd Jan., age3; Frances, daughter
of Samuel Andrews, 6th Jan , age 6; Samuel
Andrews, the father, 7th J an., age 34; J oscph
Andrews, 2nd Feb., ago 19. Eleven of these
twelve deaths occured within the compass Of
a mile. Others have had what has been call-
ed Diptheriafi but they have recovered or are
Convalescent, and we hope there will be no
more fatal cases. ~

A shed was burned in East Bridgeport,
Wednesday night, tOgellier with a horse
owned by a man-named Schrad.
The masquerade Ballpf the 4 S club came
off on Friday evening last.
As the result of the revival in Rev. Mr.
Smith’s church, East Bridgeport, between
sixty and seventy persons have united with
the church, and others are expected to join
soon.
The Union Republican Senatorial Conven-
tion for the 10th District will meet attire
Sterling House in Bridgeport, on Thursday
the 12th day of March, 1868, at 11 o'clock,

We hear that thelower bridge is to be free
to the public after the 1st of March next.
The committee who have had in hand the
project for the establishment of 0. Soup House
in Bridgeport, have succeeded in their chari-
table enterprise, and will open the establish-

hour, commencing at eight o'clock, and daily
thereafter, at the same hours, Sundays not
excepted until further notice ,

The Cashier of the National City Bank
celebrated his tin wedding on Thursday eve~
ning last.
:At a “Charity Supper” given by ladies of
Bridgeport, Thursday evening last, $600 was
raised for charitable purposes, and the Stip-
per was repeated thenext evening.
There is a serious scarcity of coal in Bridge-
port, occasioned by the suspension of nav-
igation on account of the ice in the habor.
They have bold thieves in Bridgeport. On
Wednesday evening a lady had a iurtippet
taken from her shoulders by a female thief
and carried ofi‘, while she was sitting in the
gallery in Franklin Hall. A number of la-
dies saw the theft, and the owner of the tip.

this only hastened hcr exit out of the hall.
The late census taken for the benefit of the
Water Company is concluded and the follow-
ing’ is the result arrivedat: Population of
the 1st Ward 7,397, of the 2d Ward 4,237, of
the 3d Ward 5,497, total 17,131 souls. This
it must be remembered is within the corpo-
- ’ratiou limits, and does not include the entire
population that really and practically reside
in Bridgeport. Counting in the inhabitants
of the town, outside of the city limits, and the
residents of Fairfield Ave.',who really belong
in the city, and the total of population will
reach over twenty thousand. It is safe to
plube the present population of the city at
17,500. The census takers report a large de-
orease in the population of the city since the
late dullness in manufacturing came on, a
large number of persons having left town on
that account—Standard.

book is now going through the press in Hart-
ford, and samples of it have been carried
around by the agents to show to purchasers.
Among the steel portraits in it is one of Fred.
Douglass. A few days ago the agents began
to come back, with the assertion, (made to
the publishgrs), fi'that the portrait “of Fred.
Douglass spoils the sale of _ the book." The
publishers consulted Mrs, Stowe, and re-
quested that the offensive portrait be taken
out. Mrs. Stowe firmly refused to allow it
to be removed, and it stays there.
