Ephriam Merritt, who was seriously hurt
at the depot about four weeks ago, is able to
get around with the help of a cane.
The chief Engineer of the Boston, Hart-
ford and Eric Ro rd, was in town on Friday
last, accompanied by Mr. Fenn, well known
to our citizens as their former engineer resi-
dent lrere.. The work is to be commenced
early in the spring, and' i: to be vigorously
posecuted, the contractors, Messrs. Dillon &
00., being men of ample means and large
railroad experience. The route is to pass

At a meeting of Hose= Company, No. 1.
Tuesday night, the following. ofilceis were
elected for the present year: Lucius Bough-
.ton, Foreman ; Levi McKinney, Assistant
Foreman; Samuel Wildman, Secretary, and
Treasurer. ' ’
Early Sunday morning. Jan. 5th, a dwell-
ing house owned and occupied by Mr. Henry
Sturges, was destroyed by fire. It is believ-
ed to have been one of -thc oldest buildings
in Danbury. It wasbuilt in the architecture
of the olden times. and in its-day was con-
sidered a well to do farm- house. The centre
by the devastating flames, look grimly out
upon a neighborhood over which a hundred
years have passed since it was created. ‘ The
body part is ponderous in proportion, and
look’szmore like the nucleus of a pyramid
than a domestic avenue for smoke. 'Mr.
Sturges lost some of his furniture and quite~
an amount of clothing, on which was an in-
surance of $500. The house Was insured for
$800, which will hardly cover over half the
loss. Another family living in the house,
Mrs. Smith and children, and her mother
living with her, Aunt Sally HOyt, lost most
of their clothing, and about all their furni-
ture and bedding. A purse of $150 was
made up for them.
At one o‘clock, Tuesday morning,fire was
discovered in the large W001 Hat Factory of
S. C. Holley, on Main Street, near the bridge.
The Fire companies were quickly on the
spot. and very soon had streams of water
playing upon the fire. . Over the flames no
control could at first be had,and they ran
other, very soon engnlphing the building.—
A man, who was asleep over the omen, be-
came aroused in time to save himself, but to
do so he was obliged to jump from a window.
He was not injured. The fire euccombed to.
efforts of the firemen ‘2 142 o'clock, leaving
the building a rain. The floors andtroof
were destroyed, and also large portions of the
sides 9f the stock and fixtures but little
were saved. The origin of the' fire is un-
known, but it is believed to have been the
‘work of an incendiary. , Theloss on the
:building, stock and fixtures is about $30,000.
Insured for $18,000 In the burning of this
factory, the village sustains a less, the pres-
ent dull times make it illy fit- to bear.
Quite a number of operatives are thrown
out of employment by this miéfortune, and
the scarcity of work gives them no prospect
of being able to shop elsewhere. Like the
old house on Franklin street this structure,
which follows it soon to destruction, was an
old familiar building. It was one of the pi-
oneer hat shops of Dsnhury, and has wit-
nessed the progress of halting almost from
its conception. A little more than a year ago
Mr. Holly gave the old building a complete
overhauling, and made a very fine looking
factory or it, by adding another s‘ory, and
newly siding and ymfing it.—1€mea.

feet of new hose for the fire department,

fire proof safe weighing between 2,000 and

shafting in the sash and blind shop of Swords

was revolving at the rate of three hundred
times a minute. Her father, who was stand--
ing near, instantly removed the belt, but
the unfortunate child was found to be terrio
bly hurt. She died the next day.
