In my las. letter, in which I accidentally
referred to Nort'alk, while describing Neva-
da, Cut, the comparison made was,oi course,
with reference to public spirit,and that in
relation mainly to the past. Your recent is-
sues have shown how rapidly your beautiful
town is asserting her rightful position and
yielding to the progressive spirit of the age.
I tllink very likely you felt- inclincd to
charge me with exaggeration, if nothing
worse, in respect to some of the items of in.-
tcrcst in Nevada which I mentioned; but
they werestrietly correct. You misprintcd
i-e figures which gave the number of vol-
llncs in the City Library. If they were no
limb than 300 or 400, as you gave them,they
woulunot be worth speaking of. Multiply
bv ten and you have it asJ wrote, and as is
true. Alli this need not surprise, for it was
founded at to early day; has escaped all fires
and 130m Q-msuzntly added to. One hundred

Nevada City has alway- been good, being

are supposed to follow the first dictates of
nature.
The other party points to the tardy adap-
tations of nature’s giftsby a civilized people,
as a clear proof that the weed was not inten-
ded for the uses to whichlt is applied. But to
discuss such a question as this is useless. In
tended for man or not, experience has shown
us its use is hurtful in the highest degrec,and
the numerous ills arising from its excessive
indulgence. certainly seems to advocate its
prohibition.
Let us glance for a moment at some ofthe
effects of tobacco on, man. 1st. Smoking
weakens the digestive and assimilating pow—
crs,eufccblcs the due elaboration of the chylc
and the blood, and prevents a llcalty nutri—
tion of the various structures of the body.—
Hence result, especially in young persons,an
arrest of the growth of the body, diminua-
tive stature; a 'pallid and shallow true of the
surface; an insufficient and an unhealthy
supply of blood; and in many instances,
weak bodily and mental powers. In persons
more advanced in life, more rugged and bar-
dy, these effects, though longer in making
their appearance, supervcnc at last and with
celerity in proportion as the habit is carried
to ex ccss.
2nd. Smoking generates thirst and vital
depression; and to remove these, the use of
stimulating liquors is resorted to, and often
carried to a most injurious extent, It is no-
torious, that the practices are, almost with-
out exception, inscparably associated.
Titus two of" the most dcbasing habits and
vices to which human nature can be degraded
are indulged in to the injury of the individ-
ual thus addicted.
3d. Smoking tobacco weakens the nervous
system, favors a dreamy, imaginative and al-
most imbecile state of existence; produces
indolencc and inability to perform any cou-
titlucd exertion, and at length sinks its vola-
ry into a thoughtless inactivity, and selfish
enjoyment of his vice. (These injurious re-
sults often do not appear until very late in
life.) To these may be added Dyspepsia,
Liver Complaints, Diarrhae, Congestion of
Brain, Palsy, Mania, Loss of Memory, Nerv-
ousncss, Ulcerations of the Lips, Tongue,

-—a lawyer and a miner, A. A. Sargent. The
Judges, district and county, are college grad-
uates, so are the male teachers in the public
schools, and the lady teachers are from Nor-
mal Schools at the cast. It isnot unusual to
find men who are engaged in working min-
ing claims, or in the mechanical or other
business, possessed of liberal 'cducatio’n. ‘
Possibly you wondered how a stream of
water styled a creek could need to be spanl
lrcd by a costlywirc suspension bridge. But
it is (lastly explained. Rivers and small
streams throughout the State, excepting the
Sacramento and San Joaquin in part of their
course, always canyon, that is,cut out a deep
gorge for themselves; so that, though you
might jump across the stream in summ'er,thc
sleep sides rise up almost perpendicularly
for a great many feet. This is affected most-
ly in winter, when the little brook becomes
a raging, tcmpcstuous flood. Deer Creek
flows through such a canyon, and to crOss it
on thcsouth side of the town, a suspensiOn
budge. costing twelve thousand dollars was
built. The first one erected fell while sever-
al lOadcd teams were crossing it, killing a
Hnnhcr of oxen and two men.
One of the things which a stranger ob-
serves in California is the enormous loads of
freight transported over the mountain roads.
It. was an ordinary thing to see scveralof

Young tncn think it'manly to blow as big
a cloud as some expert veteran, and devoted
smokers blow away enough money during
their lives to purchase a modoeratc annuity;
they wastc‘more health than their resources
can redeem, and shorten their lives several
years by the filthy habit.
Students in our colleges destroy their men-
tal and physical powers by tobacco smoking
so as to until. them in many instances to pros-
ecute their studies; ‘we have even thejudges
on the bench quidding tobacco, as well as
members of Congress, and Washington, our
great National Capital, has deservingly been
called “the Headquarters of Tobacco Tinc-
tured Saliva.”
Ministers, sad to relate, are not entirely
free from this disgusting evil. Many an ex-
cellent sermon, comes from a tobacco lined
moullr, but the end of these men has not yet
come.
By its so general cousutuption,we must be-
come changed in both corporeal and mental
faculties-we cannot fail to become enfeebled
in body and mind, and become a deterio-
atcd race.
Excessive smoking has had no small share
in the degeneration of Spain, The Span-
iards have paid for it by the loss of their po-
litical importance, their arts, their literature,
and their chivalry, which made them one of
the first people of the world. Spain is now
a vast tobacco shop, and its only consolation
is, that other nations arefast approaching its
level. That this is so no one can deny, and
it is a subject for deep consideration and sober
thought

of and to forbear this filly novelty. “A cus-
tom loathsome to the eye, harmful to the
nose, hurtful to the brain, dangerous to the
lungs, and the black stinking fumes thereof
nearest resembling the horrible St 'giau
smoke of the pit that is bottomless.”
The Great. Napoleon, oncclool: a fancy to
smoke for the purpose of flying :: Very fine
oriental pipe presented to hint by a Turkish
or Pent-tn ambassador, but scarcely had be
drawn a mouthful, when the smoke which
he knew not how to expel from his mouth,
turned back into his palate, penetrated into
his throat, and came out by the nose and
blinded him. As soon as he recovered his

man who had lately arrived in. this country,

before him and settled in some of the dig- ,
gings in that part of the country.
Pat was a strong mama true Roman Cathl-
olic, and had never seen the interior of a .
Protestant church. Ingalls-wasapiousman. .
He told Pat he was going to church, and i-n- '
vitcd his new-made friend to keep hi com— 5
puny thither, his destination being a small
meeting house near by. There was a. great
cvival there at the time, and one of life dea—
-ws, who was a very small man in. stature,
I invited brother Ingalls to a. seat in his pew.
He accepted the invitation, followed by'Pat,
who looked in vain for the altar, etc. After
he was seated, he turned ar‘ourid to brother
Ingalls,and, in a whisper that could be heard
all around, he inquired:

“Hush l" said Ingalls, “if you speak a word

The meeting was opened by prayer by the

Thc parson grew more fervent in his de-
votions. Presently the deacon uttered an
audible groan, “Amen!" ‘

cy at all?" said Pat, at the sometime giving

lose his equilibrium.
The minister stopped, and, extending his
hands in a suppliant manner, said—
