The blinding storm of sleet and snow,
which traversed our continent from the far
West and biockaded all travel from Dakotah
to the St. Lawrence gulf, met“ over W351”

Congress seems tohavesy mpatbized Withthe
week‘s Clnbtllgo, and has made little or no
progress in the real busmess 0f the session.
The most noted enactment of the week is
the ioint resolution, passed to- -day, adjourn-
in'g from Friday next over to the 6th of J an-
nary. That body has done enough, however,
during its Inlet session, to give assurance to
the country that It Is resolutely determined
upon greater economy in all the departments
of government; upon some fixed and more
advantageous system of financial manage-
ment; and upon afurther, but judicious,re-
auction of the onerous burdens of taxation.

The Hercules of the American Congress,
who for long years has stood forth to boat off
and thwart the hordes of rapacious treasury
thieves, is Enmu B. WASHBURNE, of Illinois.
The foster friend of Gen. Grant, and his
most intimate,V and confidential personal as-
sociate, perhaps, he is no less the earnest
friend of a pure legislation, and a wise but
rigid economy in the expenditure of the pub-
lic moneys That he has saved millions of
money in thwarting lavish and corrupt ap-
propriations is conceded by all, and he can
well bear the contempt of the rogues who
swarm the lobbies so long as he has the grat-
itude of the honest, toiling masses of the na-
tion. A thousand thanks to Illinois Wash-
burne. Thé country owes him more for his
long years of faithful devotion to her inter-V
cats in this regard than, in that he‘has provi-
dentially supplied us with an accepted can-
didate for the Presidency, and saved us a
congressional session of plotting and counter-
plotting in a strife for the advancement of
this, that or the other Candidate and clique.

The most glaring Congressional extrava-
gance and nuisance is its Bill and documént
Printin. is is estimated that it would require
lino hundred army wagons to cart the annual
Agri'cuiturai Reports out of Washington.
These books cost for paper, printing, engrav-
ing, binding, &c. but a little less than three
dollars per volume, and there is not an intel-
ligent farmer in the land who does not know
that any single copy of his Agricultural pa-
per, costing five cents, is of more practical
ealue than any one of these voluminiousS‘Re-
ports." Well may the overburdened tax
payers of the'Country cry out against this
monstrous extravagance, when the cost of la-
her, in wrapping and mailing and then for
mail service in. Viransporting these hundreds
of tons of worthless books over the land, are
taken into account. Then follows the Frank-
ing privilege and its abuse. There is not a
party election. or a gift enterprise swindle,
but that this fraud upon the xevenucs is
brought into most vigorous use, and every
member of Congress knows it. They know
lllfleovel', that every Reporter, clerk, Ines.
senger, boarding house keeper, and “a clev:
er-iciiow” in Washington,as if conspiring to
make the system loathsome, go about forti-

to the Revenue if these little leaks were cut

being on employment for them. It is the

‘ The new. commissioner of Agriculture,
Col; Ca pron, has been for many years a large
manufacturer: at 'Lowel,'Mass., an amateur
but extensive agriculturralist. The new De-
partment Edifi'ce is nearly completed and
will soon constitute another imposing public
building in Washington.

The President’s Message to the Senate, ex-
plaining and justifying his removal of Mr.
Stanton, though not made public, excites
much unfavorable comment. The artifice,
so in quently indulged by the President, of
furnishing the Associated Press witha pet-
lifogging statement of public events, prepar-
ed in his own interest, as was done In the
garl ling the despatcb of Sheridan, and is
again repeated in this instance, isosndemn-
ed as unworthy any one,_not wholly given
ovm to the arts of a demagogue. But DE"?
politics and inordinate personal ambition
works queer freaks here in Washington. The
"unkindest cut 0t all" upon the President, is
the street slang of even the newsboys, whb

It is sad and humiliating to note the popular
contempt with which this high oilice' Is now
viewed, and even our democratic friends are
no wise loath to add to the volume of odium
by their ridicule and jeers. That these who
have his confidence and private ear have de-
luded him into an expectation of being a
nommee for re- -election,' at unoubtedlytrue,
but how sadly and how utterly he ‘ls to be
:lisappointed it is needless to write. The
fierce Democracie" Will use him to the utter-
mo't hilt when it comes to a National Con-
vention, n0 copper delegate will be so poor
as to give Andrew Johnson the empty hom-
age of 8 magic vote. The democrats have

canvassed. Henry Wilson, Hannibal Hambé
lin, Gov. Fenton and VGalusba A. Grew nre
prominently on the political track. Mr.
Grow' Is now here and in addition to his own
State, will, no doubt, command considerable
support from New England and the wet;—
There are few truer or noble; men in our
party and none more deserving the honor.

The city has abounded in Conventions this
week; There have been conventions of the
National Union League, the Grand Army of
t_he Republic, representing-over a million and
a hall of voters in their organIz It o.ns The

session with the Comptroller of the Curren-
cy since Wednesday. They have deviSed a.
most thorough and systematic protons of Vex-
aminations 0f the National Banks. The ex-:;
aminations have heretofore been very search-4
ing in their character, but hereafter they will
be such as will develop any and all irregu-‘.=
iarities and rascality. At lens. it is confi-
dently expected that our friend Myg'att Will
be so thoroughly fortified that no rascality
can escape his Argus eyes again in New Mil-
ford, while he continucs a resident of that
quiet and beautiful locality.
The Whiskey Distillers of the nation are
holding an imposing and spirited conven-
tion at Willard’. There special efloIts are
towards devising ways and means to manu-
facture whiskey and make it an honest (i) I’VU';
siness. The problem how whiskey, which
by law should 'pay the government $2 per
gallon,‘ Is to-day so old' In New York for $1. 75
willbe explained probably, to Commissioner
Rollins. It is understood that these public
benefactors promise to pay honest duty; if
Congress will put down the tax to some
figure so low that rascality and avarice can-
not be led into temptation by a promise of
remuneration.
The President has nominated Mr. G. H
Hollister, oi Litchfisld, as Minister Resident
to Hayti [Hi-to] and it is confidently hoped
that he will be at once confirmed. The posi-
tion would not be craved by many, but a gun‘
tlemau of Mr. Hoilister’s well known ability
and taste for historical research, the position
offers many substantial inducements,w which
we have no doubt will be improved for his
own and the nation’ s advantage. The
friends ofcx-Senator Foster are pressing him
for the Austrian Mission, declined by Mr.
Greeley, and from whichMr. Motley,:t4he p01-
ished scholar and historian, Was so swinisbly
rooted by Mr. Seward upon information of
the secret informer, M’Oracitert. The PresiL
dent could not do himself or the country a
greater credit than by conferring the place
upon Mr. Foster.
The list of Connecticut celebrities was aug-
mented to-day by the arrival of “Cleve" of
the Hartford Post Ofilce, who came through,
as we learn, brandishing a commission as
“Special Post Office Agent, " whicb,if confer.-
ring no honor,ensures afrcc ride. Some urt-
feeling wag of the Nasby school, has been
putting Cleveland and Babcock into print
and in a correspondence from here to the
New Haven Journal, has given such a per-
fect portraiture of the brace of werthies,that
every one herr who has seen the epistle and
knows the parties, has been moved to im-
moderate laughter. Poor Randall roared fill
he cried. V

The expectation that a vacancy Would oc-
cur in our district in Congress seems to have
been abandoned. A prominent member of
the committee on elections, remarked a day
or two since, that the contestants of Mr. W-
H. Mount, had entirely failed to make out
a case. It seems to be the prevailing opin-
ion about the Capitol that the further consid-
eration of the case wrll be dropped.

The present state of the Washington mar-
kets isa “novelty" to one familiar with its
past history. Hitherto it has been noted for

war, Yankee antlers, Northern grocers. Mar-
ketmen, and the like followed the wake' of
the grand army hither by the thousands, so
that now many remain, and the competition
thus engendered, has redeemed the public
markets of Washington, though it has ruined
their reputation for exhorbitant prices.

.—A terrible railroad accident occurred at
what is Called Harlow Bridge, near North-
field, Vt., on the Vermont Central R. R., last
TuesVday. The bridge had been burnt, and
about 70 men were working on it. On the
day of the catastrophe they and dined at the
hotel at Noxthfield, and were returning on
cars to their work which wss‘l 1 2 miles dis-
tant. But before the train could be stopped
it was backed ofi‘ into the gulf. About 20
were killed, and a large number of the rest
