grounds, Wednesday afternoon last, iii pres-
ence of quite an assemblage of spectators,
inircli exceeding my previous gathering this
season. The Base Ball field of the Monitor
Club is near the Stone Cottage and grounds
of Mr. S. II. Alden, on the \Vcstou road and
is rather undulating, yet, a very good field for
exercise. The rain the evening previous had
laid the dust and prepared the grounds very
favorably, as thl as rendered the air cool
and pleasant for the occasou. The Monitors
had designed tO give their Bridgeport friends
a formal reception, as well as a collation, at
their clrtb rooms in Jesup‘s building, but
having receiver] a despatch from them stating
they would take an earlier train than they
had emu-mplated, they were, upon their ar-
rival, kindly earcd for by the different mem-
hers of the. Monitor club. About 23 members
of the Bridgeport club, together with :1 del-
egationot honorary members, as well as nit--
morons delegations froth other clubs, were
pre eat to witness the game. The arrange-
ments for keeping the grounds clear and af-
fording space and room for what carriages
chose to drive on, were ample and well con-
ducted. The Monitor club labored under
some disadvantage in the absence Of two or
three of their best players , one had taken :1
wife the day before, and “therefore could not:
come,” and other “had a farm arid must needs
attend to it,” but yet despite these disadvan-
tages they entered the contest vigorously.—

The strawberry season it. now iii its prime;
the weather seems favorable for their growth.
Matty of our fat-triers are. turning their atten-
tion to raising, them and have entered large-
ly into the business. Mr. Amsey W'arren,
oi' Greens’ Farms, has about. three acres
planted; it. is estimated his crop this season
will reach four hundred bushels. Mr. Eras-
tus l,’.'Suiith has six acres which promise
him a large income. The Messrs. Wakeman,
Taylor, Sherwood, Conch, and others have
also largely turncji their attention to the
strawberry culture. Among those living
nearthc village, we may mention Mr. F. C.
Footc whose grounds are literally covered
with the delicious i'iuit. Mr. M. W. Wilson,
and othcrr have fine and promising fields.
The farmers say it requires no more labor to
raise strawberries titan it does a goird corn
crop, and yield Ieu t'ohl profit. The large.

New Haven and Boston.
The great feature. of the week, is the
Strawberry [festival to bi». given by the la-
dies of the Congregational China-h and Soci-
