are in ecstasies over the prospect of tire
immediate construction ~ of the Rail-
road to New Hope—tire pet local in-
ferest, in comparison with which all
others are insignificant. Tire grading of the
new Road has actually commenced, ground
having been broken last week, and it is ex.
pected the work will be pushed on with en-
ergy, and the Road completed the coming
summer. '
Messrs. Stephen Hoyt & Sons, the enter-
pristng nurseryrnen who have aided so ma-
terially the prosperity of the town, have just
issued a new Catalogue of trees, vines, shrttbs
etc, together with a Price List.

Brownian—The leading topic of inter-_
est in this town, at present, is the projected
Railroad to tide-water (‘3). Three routes have
been surveyed, one to connect with the New
Canaan Road; the second running within
two or three miles of New Canaan village to
Stamford; the third through the north and
west of Stamford, nearly through the center
of Greenwich village to Portchester. A
meeting is to be held, March 20th, to hear
Reports from the towns through which sur-
veys have been made.
Barnesrorm—Rev. E. H. Chopin is to de-
livcrhis new lecture, “The Roll of Honor,”
at Franklin Hall, on Thursday evening, un-
der the auspices Of the Bridgeport Business
College.

Mn. BABNUM.—P. T. Barnum, Esq., who
_ the Tribune says, is “not apt to be defeated,”
has been nominated for Congress from the
Connecticut 4th. Congressional district. As
our party sympathies are with Mr. Barnum,
we may not be in a condition _to judge for
those of the other side; yet it does seem to
us that even though our party preferences
took us the other way, we should be compel-
led, by regard for the man, to give him our
support; and for several reasons. First let
us name the fact first drunkenness still dis-
graces Congress and should be cleaned out
without delay. Mr Barnum has given the
cause of temperance his money, counsel,
twenty years of lecturing all over the coun-
try, and his lifelong example. If this is not a
big item, tell us what is. Again all through
the war, Mr. Barnum's loyalty to his coun-
_ try was of the practical kind. It had the
genuine ring-was earnest, fearless, and gen-
erous. Yesand the brave soldiers, wh IRDOW
their friends, will make a note of that item,
we are sure. And, let us not forget the fact,
that the poor, sick, wounded, and often dying
soldier was made cheerful and strong by the
ministries of the Sanitary Commission;
and it is among the notable facts of our his-
tory, that loretnost among the eflicient labor-
ers for the Commission, was Phineas T. Bar-
nunr. Besides, the number of soldiers he put
into the army at his own cost, may come un-
der the ltead of practical loyalty. We long
to see in our National Legislature men who
do not need Congress, but who Congress
needs.

of Norwalk, withdrew the name of Mr.
Lockmiod.
After the 6th ballot, a motion was made to
proceed to a lorrual ballot, which was car-
ried alter a lengthy discussion,during which
Mr. Wm. E. Raymond, of New Canaan, very
earnestly, ably and persistently urged the
claims oi his town and the merits of Prof.
St.John, in which he was sustained by Hon.
Morgan Morgans, of Stamford. Mr. Theo.
H. Mead of Greenwich, also, in the same
manner advocated the choice of Col. Thom-
as H. Mead.

nomination bv the recent Congressional Con-
vention held at Bridgeport, of Hon. P. T.
Barnum for member of Congress for-this
District, and concur in the Resolutions
adopted by said Convention.
Resolved. That in presenting the name of
Hon. William C. Street as candidate for
Senatorol this District, we do so with full
confidence in his ability and high qualifica-
tions for the office, and rely upon the united
support of the Republicans throughout the
District for his triumphant election.

temper by the pond people of New Canaan,
when fully understood. The indefatigable
labors, perseveriug and unselfish sacrifices
made by NOAH W. HorT for the party, have
an universal recuguitibn. There has not
been a Convention for the last ten years
that he could not have been nominated can-
didate for Senator by acclamation. — Its ac-
ceptahce has repeatedly been urged upon
him, and by none with more grateful urgen-
cy than by ourselves. Yet like many others
of our most worthy and deserving, ire has
been so circumstaneed that he could not of
ford to leaVe his own business to do that of
the State, tvhile receiving two dollars per
di'ern and paying four for board. Mr. Ubyt
was applied to the treseut year, and again
declined, and it was upon a knowledge of this
fact that Mr. Wu. C. STREET consented to
be a candidate, and rt waived the nmniuatiun.
We doubt not, that had New Canaan sig-
nified its desire at an earlier period she Could
easily have borne ofl‘ the honor, if lrouor it
be, of voting for one of i own citizens for
State Senator. But it was reasonably object-
ed, when the convention lrad convened, that
it was then too late to consider the claims of
one so uddenly brought forward as Prof.
SLJohn had been. Tire names of other par.
ties had been canvassed and been aceorded
such acceptance that a gentlemrn, even of
Prof, St John‘s high attainments in all that
in Comes a If no geniletnun and scholar, could
not make succr-sslul headway against those
better known and more distinctly identified
with the p-ililics and public business inter-
ests of the District. In view of these facts,
tints hastily presented, we entreat otrr friends
not to forego their long cherished principles,
give joy to the common euerny, and make
sad every loyal heart in tlte District, by a
course that they themselves cannot fail to re-
gret, snout-r or later, and which as a prece-
dent is fraught with only mischief and inju-
ry to irieutls, while giving. aitlnnd comfort to
our enemies.
