ig, as we saw but few tings flung to the
breeze. The snow storm the day before no
doubt barred many from makingr It public ex.-
hibitiou of patriotic feeling, but it is not to
be doubted that so great and good a man as
Washington, he who was “first in war, first
in peace, and first in the hearts of his coun-
trymen,” whose fame is world wide, should
but enjoy a place in the heart of every lover
or" his country, as well as find a lodgment in
the breast of every well wisher of Society.
Everywhere lisping infancy, growing man—
hood, and tottering old age, speak hls name,
exalt his virtues and revere his memory,-—~and
may We not expect when this generation
shall have passed away, when all the vitupe-
rations of disappointed demagogues, when all
the wounds 0‘ party strife, when all the bit-
terness Oi‘ sectional feeling, when all the
jealousy and hatred, when all the animosity
and contention which now exist in thenation
engendered by the war and which finds a
habitation tn too many a heart shall have sub-
sided; that the name oi 'LINCOLN—he who

misunderstood. misrepresented, misjudged
and borne down than any other, shall not he
stand equal with the immortal WASHINGTON
—equsl in history, equal in memory, equal in

We are pleased to notice the improve-
ments which have been made in town the past
year. A number of buildings have been put
up, others are in progress; and some in con-
terhplation, which will probably be put up
as soon as spring opens. Among the im-
provements we notice Mr. Chas. H. Taylor
has moved, raised up, and remodeled the
budding once used by Mr. Will. H. Richards
as an Academy, making it into a Commodi-
ous dwelling. He has also enlarged his store
as well as fitted up rooms on the second story
of the building sufficient to accommodate
. four or five small families.
The new study and library rooms in the
rear of the Memorial Church, embracing. all
the modern improvements of heating, light-
ing and ventilation,,has been completed and
accepted.
