FAIRFIELD COUNTY ITEMS.
“'II.TON.-Mr. and Mrs. Harry W. Nashr
of Wilton, were agreeably surprised at their
residence on Friday evening, lfithjnsL. by a
party of about filly young people, represent-
ing the towns of Wilton, Weston, and West-
port. They went contemplating a happy
and agreeable time, bringing with them eve-
rything necessary to make the entertainment
a pleasant one. The young,r ladies of the
company being extremely desirous to do
their own hpusekeeping for the time being,
as well as perform the civilities of the occu-
sion, were kindly gratified the pleasure, and
immediately spread their tables and supplied
them liberally with an abundance of large
and beautiful loaves of frosted cakes, and
otherr refreshments—making a bill of fare
tempting enough for the most fastidious. A
pleasant hour was spent at the tables, after
which, sociality, music, dancing and nirlh,
held sway until a late hour, when the party
separated, expecting no doubt, soon to give '
some one else a friendly call.
WESTPORT.-The Harbor is broken up
and vessels have commenced running as
usual, making their regular trips.
STAMFORD.--Tlle third sermon on Tent-
perance, was preached by Rev. D. Lathrop,
on Sunday evening week, to a very full con-
gregation, in the Baptist Church. The Dr.
too as his text the words found in 1 Cor. 8th
Chap, 15th verse, “If meat make my brother
to offend. I will eat no flesh while the world
standeth," and delivered a most practical
discourse therefrom.
Meetings are being held to “talk up” the
Stamford & Bidgeficld Railroad matters.
A man named Patrick Hesher was run
over _at Coscob Bridge, on Friday even-
ing Week, by the 5.58, express down. He
was standing on the track with a woman
Waiting for the up train, and apparently did
not hear the whistle of the down express, al-
though it was sounded repeatedly. The
woman . stepped from the track and es-
caped unhurt, while the unfortunate man ,
had his foot badly crushed by the wheels of
the car? .Dr. Hoyt of Greenwich and Dr.
Hal ht of Stamford amputated the leg near
the pee, and it is doubtful whether he will
survive the operation.
John J. Gray, a youn man who has been
in the employ of H. B. um, suddenly ab-
sconded after forging a check to the amount
of eighty seven dollars. on a bank in New
“York. and another of $28 50 under the as-
sumed name of John R. Hay. He also col-
lected a bill of $27 from the Rev. Father
' O'Neil of this village which was due to Mr.
Lam and approp‘iated it to his own use.

was honored by a

The Concert in behalf of the Public Libra-
ry, which was given last Tuesday evening,
Was a success in every particular, and quite

Mrs. Laura E. Lyman, of Stamford, has
received the $300 prize offered bythe Amer-

Last week a young scamp who has for
some time been in the employ of Wm. H.
Tweed forged a note of $43, with the name
of Mr... weedy as endorser on E. S. Davis.
The money was paid, and it soon was lound
that the note was forged. Oflicer' Crosby
was put on the track of the young rascal, and
overtook him at Meriden, where he was put-
ting up at the first hotel in the place. He
was brought back to Danbury and in default
of bail was'locked up—Jefcrson‘z’an.
NEw'rowx.—The Cotton Factory belong—
- ing to Day, Noble & Day at Southville, about
the miles northeast of Newtown, was entire-
ly destroyed by fire Wednesday A. M. at 2
o'clock. Nothing saved. Books and every:
thing destroyed. It is thought that. .it. was
set (in fire as there was no tireor light in any
part of the building, in which the fire was
discovered. Loss about $30,000: in=ured,
$9,000, in Hartford and New Haven Com-
ponies—Standard. .
Farnrmnog—The Malleable Iron Works
were damaged by fire, on Tuesday night, to
the amonntoi $300. A narrow escape irom
total destruction.
BRIDGEPORT.—J. S. Copeland has recei
ed a patent for improved screw gage.
.' Messrs. Webb & Smith, last week, shipped
to London and Manchester, England. two
barrels of Norwalk and harbor oysters in the
,shell. This is the second invoice of those
luscious bivalves sent to the old country by
this firm. However, it is quite a novelty.
‘ The Sedgwick Guards, Capt. Lacy. and
Go. E, Capt. Cahill. are to celebrate Wash-
ington’s birthday, by a. good parade in the
afternoon. The Wheeler and Wilson Band,
in their new uniform, will furnish the music.

THE ENGINE DRIVER—When a man has
a liking for a thing its as good as being clev-
er. In a verv short time I became one of
the best (lriVers on the line. That was al-
loWed. I took a pride in it, you see, and liked

gine scientifically, as you call it; but I could
put her to rights if any thing went out or
gear—that is to s ry, if there was nothing bro~ -
keu— but I couldn‘t have explained how the
steam Worked innide. Starting an engine is
-jnst like'drawing a drop of gin. You turn a
handle and off she goes ; then you turn the
handle the other way, put on the brakes, and
you stop her. There’s not much more In it
so far. it‘s no good being scientific and know--
ing the principle oi an engine inside ; no
good at all. Fillers, make the worst drivers.

It's just as I've heard of a man with regard
to his inside: [i lieknew what a complica-
ted machine it is, he would never eat or
drink, or dance, or run, or do anything, for
