The Congressional Conventidn call-
"ed 1n our last for Feb. 5th, has been
deferred to Thursday, Feb. 14th.
WThe following Card from S. E. Olm-
stead, Esq., fully explains itself and the man-
ner in which the call for our Congression-
sl Convention has been boggled.
Explanation-"A Card.
In consequence of sundry articles appear-
ing in the New York and Connecticut press,
emanating from Jonathan Godfrey, in rela-
tion to- the call for the Union Congressional
Convention for this district, it becomes prop-
, in that all the facts in the case should be stat
ed in order to a proper understanding of the
matter. Sometime since Mr. Godfrey invi-
ted a meeting of the Congressional Commit-
tee, with a view of fixing upon a day for
the Convention. . At that meeting Tuesday
the 5th inst. was agreed upon. Mr. Godfrey,
agreeing to 'ftrrange for the Hall, see that no-
tice was given in the Bridgeport Standard,
-etc., while it was agreed thatI should give
notice in my own locality, also notify Mr.
Harris of Salisbury, which I accordingly
did. Afterthe Gazette notice was issued I
received a letter from-Mr. Godfrey suggest-
ing Tuesday, Feb. 12th, and New Milford as
theplaca of convening the Convention. To
Mr. Godfrey I immediately replied that the
notice for Tuesday the 51h had been already
given, in accordance with our first arrange-
ment and that 5., change to New Milford
would be improper, inasmuch as our Com-
mittee was instructed by the last Convention
to call it at Bridgeport. To the last note I
received a reply stating he “should call the
Convention for Wednesday, the 13th day of
February, at Bridgeport.”
Upon the receipt Of this, I immediately
telegraphed the Bridgeport Standard, Lttch-
field Enquirer, Winsted Herald, and wrote
Danbury Jefersont'on and Stamford Advocate,
stating that the change was made “by order
of Mr. Godfrey.” Judge of my surprise up-
on finding, through the New York and other
papers, that Mr. Godfrey had “swung around
the circle" for the third time, and without
conference with me or any other member of
the committee, so far as I know, had issued
a call for the. Convention for Thursday, Feb.
14th,-—a day entirely acceptable to me, and
would have been from the beginning. The
extraordinary terms in which Mr. Godfrey
has seen fitto couch his public notices, ren-
ders this statement a simple act of justice to
myself; while the letters of Mr. Godfrey will
be at the disposal of the Convention if the
matter is deemed of sumcient consequence

legal rate, but permitting the taking of seven

gal rate seven per cent., and places our own
between two leading financial States where
that is the legal rate. In our judgment,
this should settle this long agitated question
in Connecticut.

mined to inaugurate measures looking to

on the part of these institutions to secure
proper relief.

and proceeds to-call him all sorts of names,
barking at' him as vigorously as we some-

does not controvert one of our statements

necessary to pay any attention to its person-

Congress I
During the past 11 cck has been laboring with
commendable application upon the Tutiff
bill. It has passed the Senate with remark-
ably few amendments and returned to the
House where we eutrcat it may take precg—
dence of any other measure till finally per-
fected and adopted. The bill is far from be-
ing what itsliould be, but much better than
we had good reason to fear it might be. Sen-
ator Grimes vindicated his traditional stu-
pidity in a general onslaught upon the entire
system of protection. This is the same Re-
publican senator, who as Chairman of the
Senate Naval Committee has for years been
persistently determined to gag the, League
Island iniquity down the threats of the over--
burdened tax payers of the country. With
this Tariff, which will both ensure protection
to home industry and revenue, we shall see
a general revival of trade. Our mechanical
and manufacturing interests will at once re-
vive. Labor will be employed and paid 1e-
muuerativc wages Vuud the wholeintricate
machinery of national prosperity set in 'mo-
tion. The factories and work shops allnglow
with thrift and energy and our merchants,
our farmers and indeed all our people, feel
the electric currents of prosperity and our'
whole people will again enjoy the happiness
and prosperity wrought only by general em-
aud the products of American labor.
It is one of . the strangest fallacies,.'and
most unaccountable vagaries of the Amer-

the corridors of our Capital at Washington
a powerful lobby, paid by British . Gold for

ure which shall shut out 01 our market, the
products of English labor? We do not feel
our indebtedness and gratitude to England
to be so great as to give her the control. of
the American market and the bread our 'la-
