Guardsmen—The Union Republican cau-
cus to appoint delegates to the State Con-
vention was held on Tuesday evening last.
_ Messrs Joseph E. Russell, Charles E. Stud-

were appointed delegates, Congressional
and Senatorial delegates will be chosen at
another caucus to be held in a few days.

tional Bank, of Westport,had their third An-
nual Dinner, on Monday, 7th instant.
The old Sturges property, on the road
to the Depot, changed hands recentlygthe
dock opposite is being enlarged for the bet-
- ter accommodation of the public.
The steam Propeller, P. F. Brady, is moor-
til at Staples dock.
The Derby and New Haven Railroad is
expected through here the coming year.
The people have an eye to their next leg-
islature.
Rev. J. Eaton Smith received, a friendly
call from a number of parish‘oners, on Mon-
day evening, 14th instant. ,
Rev. Mr. Vinton receives his donation vis-
it in the basement of the Methodist church,
. on Thursday afternoon and evening of this
week. Should the weather prove stormy it
will be deferred to the next fair day and eve-
ning. ,
The ice men,and others, are filling their
ice houses with beautiful ice, from ten to
twelve inchts thick.
Thursday, the 17th inst., was one of the
most severe days of the season; some of the
early risers say it. commenced snowing be-
tween three and four o’clock in the morning.
About nine‘o’clock it looked to us very much
like the land Dr Kane described in his trav-
els, and continued to wear that appearance
all day; the wind blowing a perfect gale and
not abating much till night closed in. The

.some places was even with the tops of the
fences, rendering the roads quite impassable.
Partners and others having teams and living
.‘on the diferent roads verging toward the vil-
lage, turned out in force and assisted in
breaking roads, removing snow banks, and
making the highways passable. We count-
ed ten yoke of oxen in one string, from the
Cross-highway District. The road was well
broken after they had passed over it.
The Republican caucus to appoint dele-
gates to .the Conventions was called for Sat-
urday night last. ' ‘
The newly elected officers of Temple
Lodge, No. 65, F. & A. M., (a list of which
we published in our last,) are to be installed
with due ceremonies, this (Tuesday) evening.
Mountains—At a meeting of the Union
Republican electors of the town of Ridge-
field, held in the Town Hall, Saturday eve-
ning, Jan. 19th, 1867, the following persons

Brunet; OIL—While visiting. Ridgefield
last week, I wasshown by Col. H. K. Scott,
a very superior milk cup, and one cup
and saucer made from stone discovered
on the premises of Rufus Roberts in the
town ' of Ridgefield, which specimens were
far superior to imported were shown side by
side. This property is about one mile from
Ridgefield street, and the owner says there
is every appearance of an inexhaustable
ledge of this stone. If so it will buildup
Ridgefield to a considerable exte nt. I hope
that the new discos'yy and the long-talked

WnsroN.— Frid..y night the 11th inst,
while the night workmen in G. W. Bradley
& Sons, Axe Factor} were at work they un~
luckily got too much headway on the ma-
‘ chinery causing one of the large grind-stones
of“ nearly a half ton weight, to burst in twain,
thereby injuring one man slightly, and en-'
‘dangering the lives of two or three others,
besides demolishing two windows and other-
wise damaging the- building, machinery and
inch to the amount of some 500 dollars. it
is not hang since ‘we chronicled the death of
one 'of the workmen, Mr. Wm. Abbott, by
the same cause. A number of men were
necessarily thrown out of employment in or-
der mgmpair damages; we understand they
have made the necessary repairs and com-
menced work again.
DANBUBY.—The jewelry store of S. G. Bai-
ley was entered on Friday morning last and
robbed of about $1,000 worth of jewelry.
C. E. Andrews and Chas. T. Stevens have
purchased of F. W. Benedict the pro erty
on Main street opposite the Danbury ank,
covering a front of 100 feet and an average
depth oi 180 feet; including the stores of C. T.
Stevens, C. E. Andrews, Burr Roland, the
National Saloon and Zorkowski's Clothing
Store. It was purchased for $25,000. It is
one of the most desirable spots on Main 81.,
and the building on it will soon be replaced
by a large substantial Block. When the
change occurs, it is the intention of the pres-
ent proprietors to take out the ugly corner
which at present maku a bad looking spot
in the street.
A fellow in town undertook to eat a bush-
' el of roasted oysters, but the last one on the
fourteenth quart stuck in' his crop. He thinks
he can do it if they will give him time to
practice, and furnish oysters—Jefirwm'an.

In the young and rising generation, the

is deranged. The beautuul and wonderful
period in which body and mind undergo so

left no oil or offensive miter. In every re-
spect if its pure spirituous liquor. The oil
which gives to this Brandy its flavor and
aroma, is wholly unlike Fact or Grain Oil,
Its odor partakes of both fruit and oil of
grapes. With acid it produces others of
ahigh fragrance. The substitution of this
Brandy for Cognac Brandy, will do away
with the manufacture of ficticious spirits,
sold under this name, both at home and
