We hope the "Old Folks‘ Cancel-t,” which
takes place on Wednesday and Thursday
evenings of this week will not be forgotten,
as it is expected to exceluny former concert ;
new music, new costumes and additional
singers have been engaged, and those who
are fortunate enough to secure seats will cer-
iainlv enjoy themselves.

ii. if. Bolden and wife had a narrow escape
from injury last Wednesday evening, 9th
inst, while returning in a sleigh from Chest-
nut Hill to Westport. The horse got fright-
ened coming down the hills near Mr. Sher-
man Waterbury‘s in consequence of the
whippletree coming in too close proximity
.With its heels, and while Mr. Beldeu was en.
deawring to pass a sleigh a short distance
ahead the horse began to kick and run at an
uncomfortable rate; the-sleigh meanwhile
struck the gutter and Mr. Beldcn being on
the lirrward seal which 'was not very firmly
secured, he was precipitated into a snow
bunk; the horse finding his load somewhat
lighter went on rapidly with Mrs. Belden re-
maining in the sleigh, and ran furiously
down the hills turning'neither to the right
or left, when with prudent foresight Mrs.
Belden succeeded in gaining possession of
one rein and brought the horse to a “knowl-
edge of his situation" a short distance above
Poplar Plains church. No damage was done
to anything save the dash board which was
somewhat dialuoated.
The sleighing in Westport is fine, but it is
wry bad on the road leading from Chestnut
Hill.

man who can expedite business thus should

Stuntman—Mr. Edward J. Caswell, the
celebrated Canadian temperance lecturer,

The barn of Mr. Walter M. Smith, on
Clark’s Hill was entered, on Wednesday
eVening and robbed of a number of valuable
articles.
The annual dinner was given this y..ar at
the Union House to the town officers, and
they‘expressed themselves highly pleased
with the fare they received.
Patrick Murray was arrested on charge of
seduction brought by Sarah McWade, but
the parties were married by the justice and
Pat released.
At a meeting of the congregation of the
Presbyterian Church, held DecBOth, to take
into consideration the resignation of their
pastor Rev. 8. P. Halsey, who has been'
obliged to give up his labors on account of
continued ill health, a series of resolutions
highly complimentary to him were passed,
and it was voted to continue his salary until
April 1st, and giVe him the use of the Par-
: :nage until that time—Advocate.
Duncan—A Soldiers’ Union has been
formed for the purpose of “promoting unity
and kind feeling, and to draw closer and
more intimate relations with the soldiers who
served in the armies of the“ United States in
the War with the rebellion. To receive and
pnservc all interesting records connected,
with the wm‘, and all important incidents in
its history, also all relics of the same.”
The liquor sellers of Danbury, nmbering
47,ure in tribulat.ion,the Temperance League
havmg serVed notices upon them that the
liquor law will be vigorously enforced on
and alter January 10th.
At a town meeting or. Saturday week,
Danbury voted to pay the $300 bounty to
the first ninety men enlisting after Aug. 29, '
1863 This leaves seventy-seven out in the
cold, whose cases go to the supreme court.
