Candidates for the Spfing
Election.

The Republican State Convention for the
nomination of State Officers, will soon as-
semble. That Josur'u R. Hawnnv, HENRr
G. TAINTOR, and LEMAN W. Corona will be
re-n nominated for the oflices which they now
hold respectively, seems to be understood in
1111 quarters. That the present incum-
bents of the offices of Lieut.- Governor and
Secretery of State will not be rc-nominated
issqually certain. When the political con-
victions of the two gentlemen la‘st mention-
ed led them to join the Johnson-copperhead
coalition against the Republican party , they
doubtless felt prepared to renounce all oili-
ci'al positionin the party which they aban-
doned. The Convention therefore will be
called upon to supply candidate's for these
_two offices.

At the last State Convention JonNT
War'r was a prominent candidate for Lieut.
Governor and failed only by a few votes of
the nomination. It would seem therefore
that his friends have some claim for his
nomination now. So also Davm B. Doors,
of' our own County, c'ame within four votes
of receiving the nomination {01 Secretary of
State, and, if his friends are as pertinacious
this year as last he will be likely to receive
the nomination.

The Ticket, thus completed, would has
strong and well selected one, and sure of
successful election.

The enterprise of Norwalk is to receive a
tangible and flattering recognition at the
~ great international Exhibition of the world’s
products at .Paris next April. The new

the appearance of one of their novel steam
pumps, the invention of the Dwight Compaé
by of Springfield, which" is to be removed
hither. The machine will be set up and
tastefully ornamented by four flags of the
following nationalities—United States, Eng-
land, France and Russia, beautifully paint-
ed entire machine, together with a super-

very tastefully and properly by Mr. Wilson.
The great merit which will commend the
pumpto all mechanics' is its extreme simplic-
ity and great power. Apress of orders will
probably prevent the firm from sending out
one of their new air pumps, which bid fair to
be fully as important an addition to mechan-
lbcal trade as their steam pumps have already
secure.

The company have placed the Pump in the
hands of Mr. Pickering, who goes out as
agent for three of the largest Iron manufac-
tories in this country ; he giving his person;

it during the Exposition as also to explain
the superior qualities of the machine and
dispose ofPatent Rights or attend to the sale
of machines, the company holding Patent
Right; for England, France and Belgium.V

Dr. Hill will have specimens of his new
and really wonderful device of coming to
marble, and there is really .no excuse for our
Felt Mills neglecting so favorable an'oppor-
tunity of exhibiting specimens of their al-
most exclusive manufacture.

We have another establishment, however,
arspresentation of which we deem vastly
more essential. It is known that one of the

_ very largest prizes is to be awarded to the

largely attended and resulted in a very gen—
eral expression of dissatisfaction with the
raising of our tax lists, and the abatement of
two mills on the tax of one per cent previ-
ously voted. VToiday the Board of Relief is
the center of attraction.

young man eloquent, ” who will deliver his
new lecture on “Fort Sumter” at Ely’s Hall,
Saturday evening. When Ward Beecher
delivered his celebrated speech at the raising
of the Stars and Stripes over the ruins of'
Sumpter, at the close of the war, Gen.Wood-
ford was in command of the city of Charles-
too. His position gave him means of ob-
taing much information of general interest,
and aside from his well—known oratory we
have no doubt illS “Fort Sumter " lecture. will
be very instructite and pleasing. Give the.
young soldier and orator the reception he so
well deserves from Norwalk people. We
would suggest. that the Hots-c Railway 00.,
run an extra car down for the accommoda-
tion of those desiring to attend from up-
town. Make no other engagements for that
evening.

going wonderful changes, and improving
constantly and rapidly. On the first of the
new year, Messrs. Hawley, Goodrich & Co.
enlarged their Eevening Press and much im-
proved its general appearance. The Press is
a most excellent and readable paper of which
Hartford. should be proud. The morning
Courant has also been improved in general
makeup, and soon as a new and larger press
can be put in, is to be furtherimproved. The

ties, but we doubt if a more select and agree-
