petrated on the family of Mr. Morris Ketch-
um, on Saturday, lat inst, by a villainous fel-
low who called at the ofllce of Mr.Ketchum
in New York and represented himself as
having initial-rived from Sing Sing (which
report was true, he having just been libera-
ted from the Prison,) with the painful intel-
ligen‘c'el‘of the accidental death ‘of his son Ed- ;
ward Ketchum. He stated that MnEdwardj
Ketchum had had the privilege of the yard;
and grounds adjoining the prison, and while,
takinga walk near where some convicts were:f
blasting rocks,'and before he could be null ,1
fled by'ihe sentinel ofI-his proximity to dan-'
geran explosion occurred and a fragment of .
rock struck him, tearing away a part of his ,-
head and otherwise mangling his body, kil-;
ling him outright. The man stated that he-
had been dispatched to New York with the

carry the news to them; but he had not

ing he should find Mr. Ketchum there, where

mediatcly to Sing Sing; and, strange to say,
he had come’away with little money and
quite- too thin‘ apparrei to think of going
that distance, and as it might be late before
he should arrive in Westport, if he could be
furnished with an overcoat and a little spare
change to defray expenses he Would esteem
it a favor. He was accordingly furnished
with a good overcoat and ten dollars in mon-
,ey'for the journey. Go ing, to the depot he
searched through the train for a passenger
to 'Westport, and finding one, Mrs Joseph W.
'Hill, told her the news of the death of young
Ketchumhandwished she would notify the
famil'yhas'sOOn as she reached home, and re-
' quest them to await the body at the depot in
'Westport, by the first train Monday mor-
rning. Mrs. Hill carried the message as re-
‘quested, to the family, who were greatly
shocked at the intelligence. The news
spread rapidly throughont the town, and as
the family were absent from church on Sun-
day, and the clergyman took occasion in the .
evening to discourse upon the life, habits, '

The stable of Mr John Ferguson, in South

ing, on his return from his wedding to ur.—-

Nelson Battery, 9. shoemaker residing at
North Stamford, purchased 3oz. of lauds-i
num at New Canaan last Monday week, went
home and drank it, and in about two hours
died from its effects. Buttery was of dissi-
pated habits and had- been on a spree for
some time previous. He leaves a wife and
figur children—widowed and orphaned by
um. .
Monday mornin wet-k as Mr. Martin M.
Scoiield oi North tamford was going to his
uncles, his horse ran away and threw him
out of the wagon ; his head struck a stone,
breaking his skull above the right eye and
ear in-a shocking manner. Dr. Burch was
promptly called, but no surgical aid could be
rendered. He lingered till two o’clock Mon-
day aiternoon when he died—Advocate.
. A vessel loaded with spokes, sunk ofl'Stam-
ford harbor Monday night. Wreckers are
engaged in picking up her floating spars, sails
spokes, '&c., and taking them into Stamford.
The schooner is the Jack Downing, of New
Brunswick, N. J. She is owned by the cap-
lain.

stand tllcre is a club of ball players in Stam-
ford that ought to be disbanded. They are
continually drinking and fighting among
themselves. Not long since even revolvers
were drawn and-shots fired. There are
some rrspcctable boys in this club whose pa-
rents are not aware of the kind of company
they keep. Wegrve this as a note of warn-
ing to the uninltlated. .

newspaper is to be started in Stamford soon,
in opposition to the Advocate. We hope the
report is not true for another paper is not
needed, and two journals could no: live there.
Even the one now published does not reccch
the support it deserves and a liberal commu-
nity should extend. Two half supported ps-
w0uld not he as creditable to the place as
one good iournal well sustained.

The storm of Monday night tore off one of

recently sank oil Southport. The vessel is
evidently going to pieces—the quicker the

The Rochester West; has advices direct
tom Nevada, which say that the re-election
, i Senator James W. Nye is almost certain.

that produced in past years. A sample n-
ken from ten casks- afforded the same results
in regard to purity ; a slightly increased
amount of the principle on which its flavor
depends, was determined by comparison
with former samples.
The indications of analysis show that this
Brandy is produced by the same process as
most of the imported Brandy.
