The other day while our warden‘aud bur- gesses Were making a tour of inspection, they entered the lock-up, and to avoid being bothered by the crowd who were gathering at the post office, they closed the door after them. When they came to go out, they were somewhat surprised to find they were shut in—there not being any knobmn the door by which it Could be pulled open, and ' they were thus kept in durance vile for some time, while they tried in the dark 'to find a sgot in the door by which it might be open- e . Thanksgiving was a quiet day in Danbury, wrth_ the exception of a short time in the evening, when there was much yelling and disturbing the peace of the village by drun- ken rowdies.—-Jeflersom'an. Rev. H. Starr- Nichols, son of the Hon. David Nichols, of Danbury, the young and able pastor of the Vine street Congregational church, Cincinnati, has resigned on account of his health, and expects to go into business anrown.—A man named Michael Kel- ley had an altercation with three negroes in Newtown, on Sunday evening week in the course of which Kelley was struck on the, head by a large stone, breaking his skull, from the effects of which he died on Monday. The negroes were all arrested. The affair caused much excitement—Hines. ' Soumon'r.—The home of Captain Ste- phen Wade in Southport, was broken into' Saturday week. Two hundred and fifty dol- lars in National Currency, a gold watch and - chain and locket attached, and bracelet were taken. Two one hundred dollar bills with ~ the name of “Wade” finely written on the upper right hand corner of the reverse were in this lot., The watch was a fine gold one, and had the inscription “Martha S. Wade, from Stephen Wade, 1863,” on the cap. Burnonronr.——The Methodist church of East Bridgeport, Rev. S. H. Smith, pastor, are building an addition on the rear of their present edifice. The new building is to be 32 by 60 feet, and to contain a lecture room and two class rooms, with doors to open so as to make the body of the church all one room, when desired. The addition gives the building a crucifix form. Galleries are to be placed in the edifice and it is to be remodel- ed and refurnisbed. The ladies of the Methodist church in East Bridgeport will hold a Fair, &c., in Staple‘s Hall, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, December 12th, 13th and 14th. Mr. J. H. Strong has been appointed Su- erintendent of the Housatonic Railroad. be sunken schooner reported as having been seen of Southport recently, was the Ori- ental, of East Machaias, Me, Capt. We learn they havea number of vet- erans among them who it seems are not tired of shouldering the musket even for old Con- necticutas wellas for Uncle Sam. Union Thanksgiving ser- vices of the Congregational, and Meth- odist Societies were held in the Congre- gational church—the Rev Mr. Littlewood, preached the sermon. The usual services were held in the Episcopal church.
