Episcopal Church in this town have recently
assed an edict to build a new parsonage.

Church, a new one of good modern style is
to be erected, costing not less than from four

BRIDOEPORT.—On Monday a workman
named Timotbv Ravens, employed in the
Bridgeport brass fillindl‘y, caught his arm in
the machinery, and tore it almost 011‘, near
the elbow.
A clergyman who resides in this vicinity,
so near that we dare not mention his name,
recently decided not to live on store eggs any
longer, but. resolved to get some chickens
and have fresh eggs, every day. He bought
a pair oi splendid chickens, made a nice coop
for them and invited his wife to take a look
at them. Taking harm the yard, he point-
ed wrtli pride to his purchase, promising her
soon some fresh laid eggs. The lady ex-
claimed, “Why, they are both Roosters.” ‘
“You do not know anything about it," re-
plied the Parson, “they are hens i" After a
short dispute a neighbor was called in who
decided that the lady was correct, and: a
hearty crow, from the fowls clinched the mat-
ter. The man and the wife turned around to
speak to the “Rector, but he had sloped,”
we trust a wiser mam—Standard.
The Farmer says that a man named Bar-
tram oi Norwalk, while in the train from
Norwalk to Stratford, on_Wednesday after-
noon, died suddenly withoutastruggle while
the cars were at the depot in this city. He
had been very ill with the consumption and
was accompanied by his wife and another
friend.

have purchased a handsome flag for the ar-
mory of 00. E, 8th Regiment, 0. N. G.
Samoan—Mr. John Day Ferguson, his
sister, and his brother Henry—one of the sur-
vivors of the Hornet—arrived home in the
Ocean Queen, from Aspiuw‘all, on Tuesday.
The Funeral services of the late Horace
Hobby, a member of the 6th Connecticut
Regt., who died of disease contracted at An-
dersonvillo, were attended at the Baptist
Church, on Tuesday last. The funeral dis-
course was preached by the Rev. Dr. Lath-
rop. Mr. Hobby enlisted when only 17, and
died at the early age of 21. He was the son
of Mr. Harvey Hobby, a veteran of the war of
1812. who had four sons in the late war for
the Union, one of them Capt. Charles Hobby
of the 17th C. V. Young Hobby was high-
1 y .respec:ed for his many fine traits of char-
acter, and his funeral was largely attended.
The Board of Directors decided at their
meeting Saturday to connect the New Ca-
naan road with the N. Y. & N. H. R. R. at
New Hope. The Stamford part of the stock
has not yet been all taken. Proposals have
been issued for the grading and masonry on‘ ‘
and about eight miles of the road.
A daughter of Charles W. Scofield,-about
11 years of age came near'meetrng with a se-
rious accident on Sunday. Herbrother sent
her up stairs for his pistol which was loaded.
In coming down the girl slipped and fell,
and the pistol was discharged. Fortunately
the ball entered the calf of the leg, inflicting
only a flesh wound.
St John‘s Roman Catholic Benevolent So-
ciety give a Ball at Seeley’s Hall, on Wed-

WDon Miguel, ex-King of Portugal, is
dead. He was the third son of John V].,
and when six years old, followed his parents
to Brazil, where they fled from Lisbon before
the French. His education was so neglect-
ed ‘that at the age of nineteen he could
neither read ‘nor write. He rebelled three
times against his father. When his brother,
Dou'Pedro, became Emperor of Brazil. and
ceded the throne to his daughter, he offered
her' in marriage to her uncle, Don Miguel.
The latter accepted, but afterwads repudiated
her, and forbade her landing in her kingdom.
In the war which ensued, the French and
English aided the young Queen, and Don
Miguel was driven into perpetual exile.

travelers writes a correspondent, have men-
tioned with astonishment the peculiar buoy-
ancy of the water of Great Salt Lake, anti
it is truly surprising. No danger of ship-
wreck need ever cross the mind of those who
navigate the lake, for it would be simply im-
possible for them to sink if thrown overboard.
With my hands clasped together under my
head, and my iect crossed, I floated on the
very surface of the lake with at least one-
tbird of my body above the water. Upon a
warm summer’s day there would not be the
slightest difficulty in going to sleep upon the
lake and allowing yourself to be blown about
as the wrud permitted; onlyone would net-d
an umbrella to keep off the rays of the sun.
It has been stated that illree buckets of
this water will yield ‘oue bucket of solid salt,
but, inasmuch as water will not hold above
.25 per cent. of saline'matter in solution, and
if more be added it is instantly deposited tip-

largP. 0n enquiring oi the mormons en-
gaged in procuring salt, they unanimously
stated that for every five buckets of water
they obtained one bucket of salt, which gives
the proportion as no less than 20 per cent.
No visitor to the lake should omit the
bath ; the sensation in the water is most
luxurious and leads one to think himself
floating in the air. 0n the way back to the
city it Will be as well for the bather to stop
at the suliJiur baths just outside the town,
and remove the saline incrnetations which
have formed upon him, by a plunge into the
line swimming bath, whose only objection is
,ts pccular odor and its great heat, which re-
quires a large admixture of cold water.
