FAIRFIELD couNTY ITEMS.
Rmonmnn.—The Ninth Annual Town
Fair opened on Tuesday and closed on Thurs‘
day last. The attendance Was quite large,
allh ugh the storm interfered and kept some
away. The show of Stock on Tuesday was
- very good, as was that of Horses and Colts
on the mount days; but 'the exhibition in
the Tent owing undoubtedly in a great meas-
ure to the motionedis'torm was but fair,-—not
up to the usual average. ‘ The Vegetable
show was small; the Fruit rather better
though not large, but some quite choice speci-
mens of Apples and Pears; the Floricultural
show was an average one,—wild flowers quite
good; the Ladies Industrial Department as
usual contained some very nice pieces of use-
ful and ornamental articles. The exhibition
of Trained Horses, [driving without reins,
guiding simply by motiond‘of the whip,] on
Wednesday, was very successful; Mr. L. H.
Bailey exhibited and drove a double team of
ponies and one single three year old colt ; Mr.
Sturgeon of Wilton, also exhibited a well
trained horas. The trial of Road and Fast
Trotting Horses, put down for Thursday, was,
owing to the rain having set in, postponed to
Oct. 4th. ' »
We think the managers missed it in bold-
ing their Fair quite so early. They would
probably have done much better and had a
finer exhibition if it had been held at the
usual time, viz: two weeks later. '
We give in another place the list of pre-
miums awarded
A lady named Crissey, of Vista, N. Y., was
very seriously injured at the Fair on Thurs-
day last. She was standing up against the
wooden railing, which separated [the trotting
track from the Fair grounds, looking at a trial
of speed between the horses on exhibition, '
and on their approach to near her position,
the shouting and yelling of the drivers fright-
ened shares which was hitched to the ‘rail
close beside her,» that he jumped forward,
struck her and crushed her against the rail,
breaking her breast 'bone and two of her ribs.
She was immediatelyconveyed home, but her
recovery is very doubtful. ’
WILTON.— The Depot of the D. 8!. N. R. R-
was entered on Tuesday night last, the mou-
ey drawer was broken open and robbed Of
what money had beentakeu in through the
day. The next mornings man applied to
purchase a ticket, and the Ticket-agent for
some reason suspecting him to be the thief,
accused him, upon which the fellow started
to run away,‘but was pursued, caught and
made to disgorge his ill-gotten funds, and
then was allowed lodepart to peace. ' If that is
the way Wilton people treat such offences
they deserve to have a repetition often.
WESTPORT.—The shoemaker's shop of
Charles Faircbild was entered by thieves on
Saturday night week and robbed of tools,
leather, &c., A pocket book was also taken
containing receipts, and $15 in confederate
bills. '
“Base Ball” is the all-absorbing topic of
conversation with all masculines. A match
game is to be played to-day between the
Westport club and a Weston club.
Samoan—This village is in the full en.‘
joyment of a great “mystery,” and of much-
consequent excitement. A certain house is
“haunted” in an unaccountable manner; “spir.
it knockings" are heard at the door, &c., &c.
No one has yet been able to solve the ‘myste-
tery, though some of the wise oneshint that
the owner is in the secret, it being known that
be is desirous of selling the place; and that
he takes this method to get his wife’s consent
to the sale. ,

. NEW Guiana—The Stamford and New
Canaan Railroad 00., was organized, on the
15th inst, by the election of the following of-
ficers: '

Brannon—Mr. George F. Nesbit has
purchased from Mr. James Bette five and‘ a
half acres on Strawberry Hill, having a front
at 3t0 feet. This is a most delightful spot,
and on it Mr. Nesbit intends to erect a stone
dwelling, 50 by 50.—Adoocatc.
The new depot is to be built by Mr. John
Meeker, of New Haven, and the Standard
says, will be the largest of all the way depots
of this road and the finest on the road. It is
to be 210 feet ion 21 feet wide, 35 feet high,
and covered by a reach roof.

Gnannwrcu—A barn belonging to Mr
Humphrey Denton was destroyed by fire on
Thursday evening week, with 15 tons of hay
and 30 bushels of potatoes. Loss about $400, ,
no insurance. Set on fire‘by boys.
Daphne—The Hartford Com-ant says that
Rev. E. D. Kinney, preached his eight thous-
andth sermon on Sunday week. He has
preached 40 years. averaging 200 sermons a
year, which isfour times too many for any
man.

paid a visit to Bridgeport, on riday last, ac-
companied by Dodworth‘s Band. . In the
evening they gave a Promenade Concert, at

York on a iortnight’s lecturing tour. He

train for New York fell, tore one of his boots
