noon. Short addresses were delivered by
Rev. Mr. Hctrick, the pastor, and Rev. Mr.
Viuton of the Methodist. Church. A very
interesting document embracing the statis-
tics of the-town, was read.and deposited in
a box among other tokens under the stone.
After the exercises were concluded, they re-
paired to Saugatuck to abcautiful' grove on
the grounds of Mr. Saxton, and spent the
remainder of the day in festive amusements.
, The sacred'rite of baptism was adminis.
tered to twenty persons on the 9th.inst. by
Rev. J. Eaton Smith, Rector of the “Memo-
rial Church of the Holy Trinity.”
The old bridge at the head of Saug'atuc k
river, is undergoing thorough repairs. The
oldest inhabitants say it has stood the weath-
er for over a hundred years. It was the only
bridge used for crossing the river at the head
of navigation previous to the erection of" the
one at the village. This is the bridge which
was crossed by the British troops during the
Revolutionary war, when they landed at
Compo and took up their march to Danbury
to burn the town and destroy the military
stores and munitions of war stored at that
place. We hope however to have this debt
of England and also 'others contracted at a
later period, paid at some future day 'by a
march the other way of the Fenians across
the same old bridge headed toward Canada.

The organization of the New Canaan and
Stamford Railroad Company is soon to be
consummated, and the work of grading the
road commenced. So say the friends of the

STAMFORD.——Clam bakes have become an
institution of the town. The third one of
the season was attended at the Cove grounds
on Saturday last, was commodored by Otto
Loeschigk, Esq, and was largely attended.
The grocery store formerly occupied by J.
N. Ayers, was sold at auction on Wednes-
day, to A J. Bell, for $465, the building to
be removed by the 15th of October.
The Board of Directors have decided to
make the new Depot two stories high with
a french roof; The contract has been given
to Messrs. Maher, of New Haven.
On Friday week, Dr. Trowbridge was
thrown from his ,carriage to the sidewalk
lwith great violence, striking the back of his
head. He was taken up insensible, but is
daily improving. Cause of accident—horse
frightened by being struck with a ball.
Mrs. Margaret Toy, who was struck by a
stone in the head by one of the four rufiians
who were sent to Bridgeport, some few
weeks since for riotous conduct, died on
Wednesday last. -
Officer Brown arrested a woman named
Margaret Sullivan, for shop-lifting, and re-
covered nearly a hundred dollars worth of
. goods. Sent to Bridgeport for thirty days.

BEDDING—Rev. K. B. Glidden, late of
Enfield, was installed Sept.12th as pastor of
the Congregational church in Redding,by the
Consociation of Fairfield East. Rev.Mr.Dick
cisou of Iowa, and Rev. Mr. Nash, pastor of
the Methodist church in Redding, conduct-
ed the initiatory exercises. The Rev. Geo.
Richards of Bridgeport, preached a very
able and eloquent sermon, and gave the pas-
toral charge. Rev. Mr. Waterman of' Men-
roe, offered the installing prayer. Rev. Mr.
Frisbie, of Danbury, gave the charge to the
people, and Rev, Mr. Powers of the same
place the right hand Of tellowship. The
concluding prayer was by Rev. Mr. Beards-
leyof Bridgeport. Benediction by the pas-
tor. The examination of the candidate by
Rev. Mr. Richards, .the Moderator of the
Consociation, was ably conducted and well
sustained. The singing by the choir being
excellent added much to the occasion. The
day was beautiful and the church was filled
with-an attentive and deeply‘interested andi.
once. The new pastor enters upon his pas-
torate in this place with the unanimous in-
vitation of the, Church and Society, and a
promise of much usefulness in this important

DANBURY.-Tlie new school house on
Balniforth Avenue, erected by Messrs. Sun-
cl of neatucss and good taste, and reflects
credit on the builders. The same firm have
the school houscon Highland Avenue near
ly completed.
A little son of Moses Norris was attacked
and badly bitten by a savage dog on Friday
Week. The boy was playing in the yard
when the dogJumped upon him, biting him
in the Jaw, on the head, and nearly taking
off one of his cars. It was feared at one time
that he would die from loss of blOod. The
dog was a-strange one, of the Newfoundland
brcetl, and was followed and killed—Times,
On Friday week, Rev. Mr. Stone, of the
Baptist church was taken with a severe at-
t-ick of bleeding at the lungs, which coin-
pletely prostrated him. It is an accident to
the whole congregation, for they love his
labors. It is likely to prevent his ofiicia—
ting in the pulpit for some months. The
services of Mr. Kennedy, the young preach-
cr,will bc secured-during Mr. Stone’s ill-
ness. '
The other day a gentleman, living about
five miles from here came to town With his
horse and buggy, and went home afoot, hav-
ing forgotten that he had ridden in, He did
not discover his mistake till he had reached
home, when he started back for his convey-
ance, which he found, upon going where he
had left it, to have gone back home by the
guidance of another driver.
F. J. Jackson has purchased Mr. Charles
Benedict’s place on Deer Hill Avenue, 'and
intends to erect a large school on the site
next Spring.
H. B. Fanton has_ purchased E. F. Fair-
ehild’s place on White Street for $12,000.
Sunday morning, as Mr. Charles Dikeman,
of Stony Hill, was dressing forAchurcli, he
discovered that somebody had carried off his
coat, and upon further investigation it. was
found that other articles, table linen &c., had
