FAIRFIELD COUNTY ITEMS.
WESTPORT.—If our friends in Westport
desire tO-mcet all their acquaintances togeth-
er, and thus save the trouble Of making calls
they should not forget the FAIR at BETTs
'HALL, advertised in another column. The
object of tlic Fairis a noble one, and we have
no doubt it will meet with much favor.
A Schooner, loaded with coal, in attempt-
ing to pass throughpthedraw of the Bridge,
on Saturday last, got stuck, and in conse-
quence carriages has since been obliged to
cross on the'upper Bridge.
RIDGEFIELD.—At the Festival of the F10-
ral Society on Thursday evening last, the
exhibition of flowers was very fine, compris-
ing many beautiful Boquets of both cultiva-
ted and wild flowers, rivaling in quality, as
well as in quantity, the Exhibitions at our
' annual County Fair. Premiums were award-

W Rev. T. B. Sturges, who has been pas-
tor of the Congregational Church in Green-
field, for twenty-five years, celebrated his Sil-
ver vWedding, on the 14th inst. Alarge gath-
ering of friends we're present, who left tokens
of esteem to the value of about $600.
BRIDGEPORT.—Titc ’ entire Fire Depart-
ment is expected to join in the ceremonies ’of
laying the foundation stone for the Soldiers’
Monument, at Sea-Side Park, on Wednes-
day. It is proposed to observe the day as a
general holiday.
It has been decided to Iranistan Avenue
to Sea-Side Park immediately. -
Mr. W. Howard Barnum has been elected
foreman ofthc Americus Hose Company, No.
6, nice Mr. Geo. B. Ruggles resigned.
There was quite a large attendance at the
Horse Race. at the Bridgeport Park, on Wed‘
nesday, for a purse of$500. The track was
in good condition and the race passed off sat-
isfactory. The following horses were pres-
ent z—Jon Morgan, entered by Dan Mace
and owned by Mr. 11. Bishop, of this city,
Fanny Allen,eutered by J. E. Turner; Moun-
tain Maid, entered by S. R. Clark. The trot
which was a well contested one, resulted in
a victory for Fanny Allen, who won the race
in three straight heats, and made the follow-
ing time : First heat, 2:35 ; second, 2:34 1-4;
third, 2:37 l-2.—Standard
STAMFORD.—The Income for the year
1865 assessed upon citizensof Stamford, over
and above six hundred dollars, exemption
and all other deductions amounts to $832,563.
The highest assessment is $72,165. There
are nine of over $20,000, and thirty-six of
over $5,000.
The amount of annuai taxes assessed for
the year 1865 on citizens of Stamford isthus:

The highestindividual tax is $7,008, and
there are seven from $2,500 to $4,500.
At a town meeting held on Saturday week,
it was voted to remove the old Town House,
and throw the grounds open to the public.
'Nothing has yet been done about a new town
House.
, The Railroad to New Canaan is now
thought to be a “fixed fact,” the stock being
all taken. A dummy engine is tO be run to
carry passengers and a locomotive for freight.
They talk about making the trip between the
two places in fifteen minutes. ‘ _

U. S. Infantry has been brevcited Captain for
gallant services at Port Hudson, and Major
tor meritorious services at Hatcher’s Run, Va.
Rev Mr. Tatlock will be installed Rector

inst. The installing sermon will be preached
by Rev Walter Mitchel.
The Presbyterian Church held a Sunday-
School picnic, on Wednesday, at Pound
Rocks—Adeoculc.

fastest time on record, in a race with “But-
ler," at Buffalo, on Saturday last. He trot-
ted a mile under the saddle in 2:18. His
previous achievement was 2:18 1-5.
——The Petersburgh, Va., Index: says that
four rebel soldiers of Lee’s army surrendered
themselves on Tuesday, to the Federal officer
commanding Petersburg. They had been liv—
ing in a cave dug by themselves for more
thana year. subsisting by plundering corn-
fields and killing game.
