and the Westport Ladies are always as
good as their word. They have sent us tick-
ets, and perhaps we shall give them a call.
A genuine case of Cholera is said to have
occurred in town recently. The patient re-
covered, under treatment of Dr. Bouton.
The Board of Health have issued notices
warning the citizens of the town of their
liability to epidemic disease, and requiring

them to remove all filth and whatever else ,

is calculated to endanger the public health."

 

RIDGEFIELD.—Tlle third monthly festival
of the Floral Society comes off in Jpnes’s
Hall, on Thursday evening.

The‘ stage . line between Ridgcfield and
Norw'alk has been discontinued. The stage
driver, Henry Whitlock, while intoxicated
felt all the stage near Abijah Betts’s store, in
Wilton, on Friday night last, and was badly
hurt. ‘

Barnum—The stormy weather last week

. necessitated the postponement of the open-
ing of the Ladies Fair from’ Tuesday until
Thursday Evening. On Friday evening the
Norwalk Band discoursed charming mu ic
under the Tent, and ‘on Saturday evening the
Lightning Calculator gave exhibitions of his
.skill. The attendance, we hear, was very
large. ' ‘

WESTON—The ladies of Emmanuel church
announce a Tea Party, to be holden in . the
basement of the church, Lyon’s Plains, on
Tuesday next, afternoon and evening.

We hear that aman was killed, by the
bursting of a grindstone, in Bradley’s Axe
Factory,-on Friday last, but have been un-
able 30 obtain any particulars.

 

W1LTON.—A Fair under the Tent, is to be
held by the ladies of the Episcopal Society,
next week. Tuesday and Wednesday, for the
benefit of the church. See adv.

 

Susanna—The First School District
have voted to builda new School House,
immediately, at a cost of $31,000, to replace
the building destroyed by fire about one
year ago. '

Thursday night week, Thomas Young and
Lewis Lockwood,-at Shippan,‘ were visited
by thieves, who stole from Young, about
100 chickens, and from Lockwood about $70
worth othams &c. The provision cellar of
Charles Leeds, at the Cove was also visited
and butter, barns, and poultry stolen from
it. Andrew Snifiin’s boat was stolen, we
learn, at the time of the robbery, and it was
supposedthat it was in that the thieves car-
ried all their plunder, Smith Weed at the
Cove had also about 40 chickens stolen on
Monda night. ‘

The henix 00. had a lucky escape from
fire afew days ago. A spark from the en-
gine 01 the Pipe 00., entered" the door of.
their sawing establishment,.and igniting the
dust, burned a large hole in the floor before
it was discovered—Advocate. . ' '

The Surburban News says that the first
car load of cut stone for the foundation of
the new railroad depot, has arrived. and that
the oldbnildi'ng will be moved off a short
distance while the new'brick building. is be-
ing built. ,Also that the new South Nor-
walk depot “will soon be attended to.”

DANBURY.-—Al1 extensive Peat bed has‘
been discovered on the estate .of Nelson L. ~
White, and a company, has been formed to
work it, and prepare the peat, by the new
process, for market. Is is, estimated that
there are from.20,000 to 25,0003t6n‘s of fuel
in this one bed; The Peat can be pressed
into the compactness of hard coal, while‘ the
intensity of the heat is as great as that ob-
tained from coal. It does not clog the grate
with cinders and clinkers,but burns to ashes,
which does not destroy the grate. As
now prepared it is much liked, and .is fast
coming into general use.

Mr. Chas. Bennett recently lost several

, hundred dollars by the tailing in of the

. brick walls of a house he was having erect-
ed. He now intends to put up a frame
house. _ 4

AI patent has been granted to Sidney S.
WheelerIand Daniel, B. Manly for improve-
ment in machines for pouncing hats.

The Catholic young men of Danbury have
formed a Society to 'be known as the “ St.
Vincent De Paul Temperance and Benevo-
lent Society of Danbury." The object of
the Society is not only to practice and pro-
mote temperance,but also to assist the needy.

Nathan Darling was On Friday ‘week
brought before Justice Todd on the charge
of attempting to commit rape on the person
of Lucy Bennett. - '

On Friday night week, some one left the
water running at E. S. Davis’ shop, which
ran all night, causing Mr. D. a loss of some
$300 by damaging his board and paper. _

The completion. of the N. Y. H. & N. R.
R., between here and Brookfield is being
rapidly pushed. The rail for 7 miles of road
is already on hand, and some track already
laid. It is expected the road will be finished
between the two places by fall, and opened
to travel—Jefcsronian.

Another match game of Ball came off, on
Saturday between the Waverly and Excelsi-

- or Clubs, resulting in favor of the former
by a score of 44 to 34. Ed. Gruman, of the

Liberty Club, was Umpire.

BRIDGEPOR'I'.—On Saturday afternoon a
man named David Thorp, residing in Lafay-
ette street, and employed by Mia. Alfred
Hopkins, while at work on the roof of
Wheelers: Wilson‘s new Sewing Machine
Factory at East Brsdgeport, made a mis-step
and fellthrough a sky-light t0 the ground a
distance of some thirty feet, receiving se—
vere internal injuries. , .-

An Irishman, named Harry Murphy,-.aged
about'35 years, a sailor ofthe schooner Bue-
na Vista, was killed by the midnight freight
train of the N. Y. do N. H. R. R. (30., oppo-
site the Stanley House, on Friday evening.
Murphy belonged in Port Richmond, near
Philadelphia, where he has a wife and one
child. - He was in liquor at the time of the
accident. His body was horribly mutilated,
both iegs being almost severed from his
body across his thighs.I

The ceremony Oflaying the Corner Stone
of the Soldiers‘ Monument, at. theISea-Sidc
Park, will take place during theIBrigade En-
campment. ' The occasion wrll probably
draw together a large number of peopleIfroui

a general holiday. It is now expected that.
addresses will be delivered by Gov. Hawley
and Gen. 0. S. Ferry—Standard.

The Temperance Pic Nic attPembroke
Grove, which was postponed Wednesday,
came off on Thursday, and was the greatest-
pic-nic of the Season. The number of per-
sons on the ground was about 2,000. The
delegations as they arrived were met by the
Bridgeport Division and escorted to the
Court House Green and Washington Hall.

A procession was formed at about ll
o'clock,and marched over to Pembroke
Grove, East BridgeportI The procession
numbered about 900 ladlesand gentlemen

' and with their banners, flowers, and badges
tnzulca very livuly and fine appearance.
The music was furnished by Lyons’ band of
New Haven. ' .

Thirteen Divisions were represented inclu-
ding Concord, of Norwalk; Purity, of Stam-
toril; Friendship, of New Canaan,and Wash-
