FAIRFIELD COUNTY ITEMS.
DARIEN.——The ladies of the Congregation-
a1 church expect to have a grand time at
their Fair, which is to be held three days
this week, under the Tent. In addition to
the on t)mary attractions, the Norwalk Brass
Band will discourse sweet music on Tuesday
evening, and on Wednesday evening the cel-
ebrated Lightning Calculator will give an
exhibition of his wonderful powers. Of
course many people from the adjoining towns
will ride in to enjoy the entertainment and
encourage the ladies. See adv.
RIDGEFIELD.—The Floral Society seems
to be fun flourishing condition. The third
monthly floral show is to be given inJones’
Hall, on Thursday evening, 23d inst., when
the usual premiums for cultivated and wild
flowers will be offered. At the last festival
a bouquet of wild flowers was exhibited
made up of 225 varieties. Much interest is
taken in these pleasing and novel entertain-
ments by the citizens.
NEw CANAAN.——Thc young 1 idles of this
village are going to hold a Fair and Festival
for the purpose of raising money which they
propose to expend in beautifying the cemete-
ry on Church Hill. The County Agricultur—
al Society‘s big Tent has been engaged and
the Fair will be held on the 21st and 22d
inst.

DANBURY.-—The first nines cf the Excelsi-

Rey. GM. Stone of the 2d Baptist Church
preached his Sixth Anniversary sermon on
Sunday week. ' -
The saloon of J. H. Anthony was burglar-
ously entered on Tuesday night last and
robbed of about $15 worth of Stock.—-- Times.
On Thursday afternoon a young man
named Booth Trowbridge attempted to com-
mit suicide by drowning himself in “Peck’s
Ditch" opposite Crofat's Hat Shop. He was
discovered and rescued, but no sooner had
he been placed on dry land, than he sought
to end his life by butting his head against a
stone wall and bucking his brains out. He
succeeded in bruising his head considerably,
and severed a vein, which let the blood out
very freely. He was said to be in a very
critical condition, and had fractured his
skull, but he will recover. Cause : bad rum

STAMFORD—The Selectmen propose sell-
ing the unsightly old Town House, and build
a new one. Good.
General Daniel Pratt, of Stamford, the
great American traveler, has been made an

The barn of B. F. Cooke, nearly opposite
the Steamboat landing, was burned on Sun-
day night last. It was nearly filled with hay
and grain, and in it and the sheds attached
were farming implements, tools, and other
property, all of which were totally destrov.

Au outbuilding on Widow Keeler’s Hill
about two miles west of J. B. Knapp’s was
burned on Tuesday evening last.
B. J. Daskam’s store came very near being
burnt down on Tuesday evening. A boy
went into the cellar with a lamp for burning
fluid. He put. do‘wn the lamp, but not being
able to see, brought the measure nearer the
light. The fluid caught fire and the flame
spread to the world work of the cellar, fortu-
nately it was smothered out before doing
much damage. ,
David Snively, the colored man, who has
been employed in sprinkling the streets and
who tried to take his life by poison, on the
4th of July last, made an attempt to drown
himself in the canal, last Wednesday night.
David, it appears, is worried withyfamily
troubles, his wife having- left him. She had
a party on the said evening, and David wish-
ed tO break it up. . Hearing the police were
after him, he jumped into the canal, but not
finding the water deep enough for his pur-
pose, he took refuge in an old coach ll] Nich-
ol’s stable, apd was arrested. He was lock—
ed up in the Town House from which he
escaped.
BRIDGEPORT.—Henl'y T. Shelton has been
appointed chief-engineer of the Fire Depart-
ment, and the following named gentlemen
assistant engineers: W. D. Sturges, John
Sherman, S. C. Nickerson, Fred Hurd,
E. M. French, G. F. Humiston, Henry
, ry Osborne, Peter King.
The Beaver Slreet Methodist Sabbath
School and friends, comprising about 280 per-
sons, went on a picnic to Milford, on Wed-
nesday last. - - -
Among the speakers who will participate
in the exercises of the Temperance pic his to
beheld in Bridgeport, on Wednesday next,
is 0. Edwards Lester Esq., author of the
“Glory and Shame of England.” In reply
to a letter inviting him to be present upon
that occasion, Mr. Lester writes: “Nothing .
stirs my blood deeper or quicker than such
a summons from my native State; a State
which has from the beginning of our history -
led the way in every great movement for the
good of mankind. Unless I am prevented
by causes beyond my control, Ishall certain-
ly be with- you."
On Sunday morning week, Mr. James B.
Fayerweather, of Black Rock, got up as usu-
al, in good health and went out into his gar-
den. Returning to the house a few'fnoments
afterwards he fell down dead. It is presum-
ed that he died of heart disease.
The Baptist Society are engaged in clean-
ing, painting, &c., their edifice.
Mr. Barak Tr Burr, of Fairfield, fell from a
load of hay on Monday and struck on his
head or neck with such force as to injure his
spine and paralize his whole body below his
breast. His physicians have but little hope
of his recovery.
Miss Clara Barton and Mr. Dorence Atwa-
ter, the Union soldier who made and kept
the record of the names of the Union prison;
ers who died in that loathsome prison pen- at
Andersonville, have been sojourning for a.

Thomas.
The new truck for No. 4, has recently been
received. It has five new ladders, and is a
good truck every way. It cost we learn,

Mr. Geo. Miller recently lost a $300 gold
watch overboard while fishing off “Point no
Point." '
On Monday week, a littleboy named Beck
threw a stone at a girl named Riley, and so
severely injured her, that her recovery is con-
sidered very doubtful. This incident con-
veys a terrible lesson to children, who throw
stones.
