STAMFORD—Tile Borough Meeting called
for Tuesday afternoon last was postponed
until Monday because a decent room could
not be obtained in which to assemble. A
meeting for the purpose of considering the
expediency of building a new school house
was held on Tuesday evening. The prelim-
inary estimate for building the school house
was $24,000, but on opening the bids for
contracts, the committee were disappointed
to find that the lowest was $31,000. It was
voted to receive further bids, with modifica-
tions of the plans.
The Stamford Post Office is now a money
order office.
The President has conferred upon Capt.
C. H. Brown, Co. A, 28111 Reg. Conn. Vols.,
the rank of Brevet Lieut. Colonel of Vols., to
date from June 14th, 1863, the date of the
assault on Port Hudson, for gallant and mer-
itorous service rendered during the siege of

The Annual School Meeting of the Center
District is to be held tO-night.
The Congregational Church Sunday
School, of Bethel, went on their annual pic-
nic on Wednesday lust.
Last Wednesday while Sherman Smith of
this village, was engaged in painting abridge
on the D. (it N. R. R. at Caunon’s Station,
he fell frotn the ladder, and sprained his an-
kle very severely. It will lay him up for
some time.
While Henry Williams, fancy dyer at Star-
devant & Benedict's hat shop, residing in
Bethel, was engaged in adjusting the belting
on some new machinery, on Wednesday, the
shutting gave away, striking him, and inflict-
ing severe-injuries on his head and shoulder.
John Quinn, working at Sturdevant &
Benedict’s hat shop, had one thumb cut com-
pletely off, and the other nearly so, .last
Wednesday, while engaged on a Blocking
Machine. He held his hands on the cylin-
der of the machine while it was in motion,
when his thumbs came in contact witha
knife on the machine and were cut as stated.
Possibly the largest safe in Danbury has
just been put up in the Treasurer’s office of
the D. 8: N. R. R. It has a lock that will
defy the efforts of all the burglars in the
State. It weighs three tons, or 6000 pounds,
and cost $600. The door and sides are eight
inches thick. .
Another very severe thunder storm visit~
ed this section on Saturday week. The
lightning was the severest of the season.
The lightning struck in several places in the
village. Once it struck the house of Walter
Fayerweather, on Highland Avenue. The
rod was too small to hold the fluid, and part
of it escaped into the house, but without
doing any damage. The wife of John H.
White, Who lives in the same neighborhood,
received a shock which stunned her for
about two hours; from which she has not
completely recovered.
A pair- of horses belonging to James‘Blis-
sard were knocked down on Main street, by
lightning.
A young man, on Wednesday night last,
jumped out of his bed and through the win-
dow, blind and all, and it was some time be-
fore he could be woke up. He was dream-
ing that some robbers“ had entered the win-
dow, and he had jumped up to give them a

on the 3 p. m. train from New York,
had his hat. taken from him in rather a
novel way. The train had just started
from the Norwalk depot when a rather
seedy-looking individual stepped up and
deliberately lifted a new “tile” from the
head of a passenger, who happened to
have his head out of the car window at
the time, without. us much saying "thank
you, sir," antl putting an old shiney cap
under his arm, and placing the new.

off, as uncoucerned asthough nothing
had happened. The passenger rushed
for the back end of the car, but it was of
no use .- “time for explanation” had
passed.
At the close of the war there was
due the government from Postmasters in
the rebel States about $300,000 of ente-
war balances. Of this about $150,000
have been oolldrted at the Sixth Audi-
tor’.-: other, and suits have been institu—
it'll for the recovery of about $50,000
more. This money has been paid over
