New Canaan—Mrs. Pettireu King will give a Reading at Concert Hall, New Ca- naan, this (Tuesday) evening, July 24th, for the benefit of the Soldiers Orphans of Fitch’s Home. The reading will commence at 8 o’clock. Etruscan—Mr. Alba Stevens, 3 shoema- ker, 60 years of age, who had been missing since the Friday morning previous, was found dead, on Monday, in the third story of Hull’s Block, his hand grasping an empty landanum bottle, and an empt whiskey bottle lying near. The door 0 the room was locked on the inside. He had been un- der the influence of liquor for a month past. The Raspberry Festival, by the Temper- ance Society, Tuesday evening last, was one of the best of the season, and netted $100 to the cause. _ Wednesday night last, a thief entered Cro- fnt & Son’s Store, unscrewed the money drawer and carried it off, alarm bell and all. The drawer contained a bad $5.00 bill. Rev. L. R. Gault, of _ Poestenkill, N. Y., has accepted a call to become pastor of the Church of Christ, in this place. On Monday morning last a boy named Patrick Green, living on Town Hill, was so badly burned that he died on Wednesda . It seems he was trying to expedite the mall- ing of a fire in the stove by pouring Kerosene upon the wood. Last Tuesday two boys, sons of Amos Raymond, of Mill' Plain, were walking upon the fence, and in trying to pass each other they both fell to. the ground,the young- er falling upon a stone breaking his arm above the wrist. The boy is doing well. The storm which visited this section last Tuesday was unusually severe. In some places it partook some of the character of a tornado The ll htning struck the plaining mill of D. & J. tevens, on White Street, which entered the roof near the chimney,set- ting fire to a pile of shavings, but the flames gore extinguished before much damage was one. ' A few days few days ago Mr. Henry Buck- ingham left for Hartford, but before starting took out a policy in the Travelers against accident. He stopped at Westport, and there took a ride in a buggy, during which the horse ran away. Henry was thrown out, had his leg broken, and is now laid up, but drawing $25 a week—J'efersonian. The Times says that B. J. Robinson, living at Great Plain attempted suicide by taking laudnum last Tuesday morning, but was ’ saved by a powerful emetic. Much complaint is made of the Kohauzie water, with which the village is supplied, and which is unfit for use in summer. S'ramsonn—The Borough ofiicers passed a resolution at their last meeting asking the town authorities to call a meeting for the purpose of taking into consideration the ex- pediency of removing the Town House. The place is a disgrace to the town, and if it is not thought expedient to build on the same location, better have an open space than the miserable afl'air dignified with such a high sounding name as the “Town House of Stamford.” The Borough also passed a resolution to find suitable lots for both en- gine houses; the one now located in the rear of the Town Hall, and No. 2, in Gay St. A resolution was also adopted to supply the fire department with newand substantial hose, the old apparatus being about used up. News has been received by telegraph, of the burning at sea of the clipper ship Hor- net, Uapt. Mitchell. The vessel left New York on the 16th of January last, bound for avoyage round the Horn, and on May 3d, when in latitude 2 deg. N, long 135 deg. 5 min. West, took fire and having a quantity of kerosene oil among the cargo, was rapid- ly destroyed. There were but two passen- ers on board, Messrs. Samuel and Henry erguson,’sons of Mr. John Ferguson of this town, who had‘left home for two years travel in this country and Europe. They, together with the captain and twulve of the crew, took to one of the boats, while the first and second mates, with the remainder of those who were on board, were divided be- tween the two others. The three boats kept company for nineteen davs when they were separated. The boat in which were the cap- tain and the Messrs. Ferguson, reached the Sandwich Islands on the 15th of June, after having been exposed in an open sea for 43 days, those on board being utterly prostrated by sufi‘ering and starvation. Great anxiety was felt for the fate of Mr. Samuel Fergu- son aud his brother until a telegram from San Francisco assured their friends of their safety. The many friends of Mr. Ferguson‘s family will rejoice with them at this gratify- ing intelligence—Advocate. anonr.—Rev. John Eaton Smith has received another call from a church in Jersey City, with an offer of $4,000 salary, which he has declined on the ground that his present pastoral duties furnish him such a field of usefulness as he cannot at present desire to be released from. Bnmenron'r.—Francis Conlau, aged about ten years, who resided in Pembroke street, East Bridgeport, was sent after his mother’s cow, Thursday merning, and not returning, his mother went after him and found the boy lying in an exhausted condi- tion under a tree. She‘took him home, but he lived only a few moments. The cause of his death is unknown. He received a severe fall off of the door step the previous evening and probably was injured internally, which Eogetllier with being over worked caused his cat . , - Monday morning one of the hands em- ployed in the Standard office, in a spirit of fun seized a glass of ice water and raising it to his lips, said, "Here's to the cholera," swallowed the water and was very soon af- ter seized with chills, trembling, and his countenance turned “white as a sheet.” He put on his boots and started at a 2.40 gait for home. Probably the pr'espiration into which he got himself by the sudden attack saved his life. He had been drinking freely of ice water all the morning. Miller, from Brooklyn, loaded with iron, sprung aleak while lying at the Housatonic dock on Sat- urday night and sunk.
