FAIRFIELD COUNTY ITEMS.
Gauuuwrcn —The residence of Mr. —-
Howe, at Peck’sland, was entered on Sun-
day last, while the family were at church,
and robbed of $600 in money, and valuable
papers. The money taken consisted of two
_ 7.30 bonds, of $400 value, and the balance in
bills. The theives are supposed to be some
tramps who who were seen in the vicinity.
Oflicer Brown, of Stamford, was‘in Norwalk
Monday, in search of them.
NEW CANAAN.—-Mrs. Petigrti King, daugh-
ter of James L. Petigru, a well-known union-
ist of Charleston, S. 0., gave another enter-
tainment at Armory Hall, on Wednesday
evening last, which was quite well attended.
Mrs. King hrs a very pleasing address, and
enjoys the reputation of being a most excel-
lent reader.
Warrant—While two ladies were riding
up the avenue from the depot, on Thursday
last, a luau from Boston drove up behind
them rapidly, and so close that his horse's
fore feet came in between the wheel and body
of the wagon; before the horse could be ex-
tricated from this strange position, one foot
caught in the spokes of the wheel. As the
result of the collision the carriage was con-
siderably damaged, but fortunately the la-
dies escaped uninjured. .
RIDGEFIELD.—-The Floral Society are to
give their second Monthly Festival, at J ones’s
Hall, on the afternoon and evening of Thurs-
day, July 26th. Music by Prof. Potter, of
Daubury. Premiums are offered for the lar-
gest varity of flowers, for the best boquet of
cultivated flowers, and best boquet of wild
flowers.
, Mr. D. Stent has started a new Stage line
between Ridgefield and Norwalk, leaving
the former place at 5 o’clock AM, and arriv-
ing -in-Norwalk in time for the Steamboat
and early trains, and returning about 6
o’clock P. M.
Samoan—The recent scandal case is
“all the talk” in town. The husband Na-
thaniel 0. Bishop, Real Estate Broker, aged
81 years, has returned to N. Y., with his
mistress,a oung and dashing widow, named
Clara B. allace. They carried away with
them, the horses,gold mounted harness, rose-
wood furnitnre,‘ &c., together with the wife’s
jewols, wardrobe, &c. The wife is still
living in Stamford, and seems to have the
sympathies of the community, but report
says is insulted and annoyed by “agents” of
her husband and his mistress. On Sunday
week, while at church, her husband and an
oflicer entered the house and took away her
stockings, underoclothingmigbt clothes, toilet
articles, and the last pair of sheets in the
house. He also forbids all persons trusting
her on his account, “ she having a sufficient
separate maintenance” from him.

Dr. Humphrey and family sailed for Eu-
rope on Saturday. .
DANBUHY.—The Temperance Society geo-
ple are to bold a Raspberry Festival, at on-
cert Hall, this (Tuesday) evening.
At the annual meeting of Kohanza Hose
00., No. 2, at their house last Wednesday.

for the ensuing year :~Foreman, Charles W.

ry and Treasurer, J. Amsbury. The compa-
ny is being re-organized on a more substan-
tial and permanent basis.
The depot of the Danbury & Norwalk B.
R. is undergoing thorough repairing and im-
provement. The building is bein ' et down,
so that .the entrance will be on a evel with
the sidewalk. while the side track is run fur-
ther to the right, giving more room to get
off and on the train.
Tim Donovan, of the Tomes, met with a
serious accident last Tuesday, He was in a
tree picking cherries, when he fell from the
tree a distance of twenty-five feet, injuring
~hlS back very severely. He is out again,
however, but looks badly—Jefenom'an.
Mr. David Parsons and sons have just com-
pleted the mammoth chimney at Holley's fac-
tory. It measures eight feet square at the
base, and rises to a height of sixty-fivefeet. It
is a handsomely built structure. . '
Alfred Sturdevant had his foot badly bruis
ed by the explosion of a small cannon on the
evening of the third. Getting well. .
Michael Keatin ,living at Grassy Plain,
while handling a Slate! on the Fourth, sus-
sained a serious injury by the accidental dis-
charge of the weapon, over the muzzle of
which he was holding his «hand. The hand
was severely burned and torn.
On Friday last, a boy by the name of
Wade, at work in the Forming factory, Beth-
el, caught his arm in a portion of the ma-
chinery, and was terribly lacerated before he
could get free. The flesh was torn from the
inside of his arm and hand.
Tas. Fitzgerald, a laborer on the new rail-
road, had his thigh broken by a fall of earth-
upon him, Wednesday morning—Tunes.
ACCIDENTAL Snoormo.—George F. Par-
rack, of Easton, came near being killed on
Saturday, J une 301k. He had been to put
his oxen out to pasture, and being very warm
had set down in the shade, when the shot
from a gun of some sportsmen who were fir-
ing at woodcock near by, struck him. Eigh-
ty-eight shot took effect in different parts of
his person, of which number, some were on
his head and sixty were in his side; The shot
have not all been extracted but he is now do-
ing well.-Jefersontan.
@The Fair held in Stratford last, week
by the Ladies of Christ Church realized $900,
for the Society.
BREGEPOBT.—Patl'ick Lawlor, an em-
ployee on the steamer J. B. Schuyler, died
suddenly on Friday evening. He had been
at work and owing to the intense heat had
drank immoderately of ice-water, which
with his very severe labor caused exhaus-
tion and finally crampsand death.
The public schools have commenced on a
seven weeks vacation. .

the glass upon the sop of the head. The pa-
per prevents the water from musing out.

adopted by the contrabands of Louisiana,
and we have seen it successfully carried out.
