FAIRFIELD COUNTY ITEMS.
Wampum—4th of J uly.—‘The ,day. was
ushered ‘inby‘the ringing of bells and firing
of cannon, and after the citizens were fairly
awake and .the juvenile poplilatiomhad re:
ceived' ' their morning rations a raid» was
made by-them upon the Toy shops in quest
of fire crackers, torpedoes, abusers and other
concomitants. The evening before the Fourth
some 25 or 30 young men engaged a Tent
of D. B. Morebouse,’ Esq,, which he had
used in the old Potomac army as a sutler’s
tent, and which was once captured by Moss‘
by and his gang, and erected it on the
grounds South oi the Bank, organized them-
selves into‘ a military cotnpany,arranged their
Commissary. and Quartermaster departments;
appointed their officers, went -through the
usual military drills, stationed their Pickets
and bunked in for the vnighh‘during the dif-
ferent watches of the night the good people
in town were duly notified that “all was
quiet on the Saugaluck”;(no reflections how
ever were intended) in the morning, at noon
and evening salutes of 36 guns were fired in
honor of the day; in the afternoon they par-
aded the principal streets dressed in a fantas~
tic dress representing the different nationali-
ties, headed bya band of music, something
after the style of the old May trainings.
Their line of march was up Wall street
across the long bridge, through State street
to Church,up Church to Elm, thence to near
the depot of the Derby and New York Rail-
road, halting for awhile tofind the depot;
and then returning by the shortest route to
their headquarters, alter which they march-
ed to the New Haven depot, to escort the
Punzelt band which was returning on the 5
o’clock train from New Haven. . The rain
coming on their ardor and patriotism rather
cooled down for the night.
The next and most important feature of
the day and evening, and also the day and
evening following, was the ladies fair at the
Memorial Church which was largely attend-
ed and well patronized. The display of
Fancy articles, both useful and ornamental,
many of which were of intrinsic value, were
never excelled by any previous fair. One
article brought one hundred and twenty-five
dollars, and was drawn by Rev. Mr. Selleck,
of Norwalk.
The Ice Cream and Confectionery furnish-
ed by Mr. John S. Jones was pronounced
superb, while. the tables presided over by
Mrs. R. H. W., Mrs. C. R., Mrs. W. L., Miss
T., Miss W., Miss B. H. and a dozen other
ladies, drew forth commendations of. praise
rom alLEvery thing passed off very pleasant-
ly, and to the gratification of those present.
The proceeds of the Fair were over a thou-
sand dollars, which are intended to apply
to the building of the new study and library
rooms, in the rear of the church, a building
costing about $3,000, and which reflects great
- credit on those having charge of its erection.
The Westport Band was engaged to fur-
nish music for an excursion on board the
steamer-J. B. Schuyler, from Bridgeport to
New Haven, on the 4th of July.

New Canaan—The Fair and Festival re-
cently given for the benefit of St. Mark’s
church, we hear, was a very gratifying suc-
cess, the Society netting about $400. '
‘ SUICIDE—A man named Sylvester Patten.
den committed suicide by shOoting himself,
in New Canaan, on Friday last. We hear
no cause assigned for the act. ~
Srmonu—Patenta have been issued to
J. C. Barrett, fer improvement in Water Ele-
vators, and to Edwin Hoyt for~improvement
in churns. ' ‘ ’
"Duncan—The Fourth of July was a dull
day inDanbury. . '
,A new organ, said to be an unusually fine
instrument is .to be set up in the Baptist
church this week. All Organ Concert, is to
be given on Frida evening, when Mr. Hen-
ry . Brown, of ew York, will show ‘up
the capabilities of the instrument.
A number of runaways occurred on the
tth, and sevefal persons were quite badly
urt. ' '
Stone & Down’s factory, at Mill Plain, which
was burnt down last writer, "has been rebuilt,
and will start work this week. '
A fire was discovered last Wéduesday on
the porch of Barnum's Hotel, but which was
extinguished before much damage was done.
Last Tuesdaywhile Mr. isaac Haviland
of Pembroke, was engaged. with four others,
in raising a barn, the establishment took a
sudden tall, burying the five under its ruins.
Strange they were not all killed or badly in-
jured, as the barn was a large one. As it
was only one of the number, one Charles
Fitzsimmons was slightly hurt.
Last Monday night the factory of W. A.
do A. M. White was entered and fifty-five
dressed beaver skins taken therefrom, valued

Bnmenronr.—The Americas Hose Com-
pilny paid a visit to the city of Hudson, N.
., and took part in the celebration of the
Fourth of July in that city. They were ac-
companied'by the Wheeler & Wilson Band.
The Fountain Hose Company made a trip
to Newark, N. J., or: the Fourth.
Somebody recently broke into the toll
house of the lower bridge and stole of the
keeper, Mr. Wyatt, about $75 in money, and
a 1gold watch and chain worth from $75 to

The yacht Comet,Ca LMcNeil,sailed from
Bridgeport Saturday or Newport and Mar-
tha’s Vineyard with an Excursion party,
composed of citizens of that city.
The pastor of the North Con tionai
Church announced on Sunday wee , from
the pulpit that the debt of the church,
amounting to $7,000, had been raised and
that the Societ was entirely free from debt.

Suzanna—A little son of Mr. Henry
Crawford, aged about six years, residing in .
Strstford, a few days since fell from a ladder
and Injured his head so severe, as to cause
his death on Friday last.
The Festival of the Congrega tionai Socie-
ty of Stratford, held last week for the benefit
of the O u fund, realized the handsome

pers of a clergyman in Medina N. Y., nam-_
ed Lindsay, who whipped his child to death
because it would not say its prayers. The
monster justifies his horrid work. He thinks
it was his duty to punish the child until its
will was broken and the father obeyed. He
was committed to jail. The officers having
him In charge had the utmost diflculty to
keep the citizens irom lynching him. He
has since broke jail and escaped to Canada. ‘ '
