be held at Bett’s Hall, on Thursday evening,

A little son of Hon. Truman Smith, was
knocked down on Monday afternoon by a
wagon dnveu through Broad St. near the
Presbyterian Church. The little fellow got
up and walked home; but was soon after
taken With spasms. and was insensible un-
til next morning. He is now considered out
of danger; but he had a narrow escape for
his life.
Dr. H. M. Humphrey, President of the
First National Bank, who has been for some
time past in ill health, has taken passage for
himself and family in the steamer Ara o,
which leaves New York on the 7th of J u y.
They intend to spend a year in Europe.
A new organ containing 28 stops, costing
$4000, has been put up in the M. E. Church.
The great Hoyt gathering, of which so
much has been.said, takes place on Wednes-

over the earth in their flower pots. This
keeps the water from evaporating, and the
temperature more uniform. Tea-grounds are
often used for the same purpose. Where a
flower pot sets in a saucer, with a hole in the
bottom of the pot, put a little sand in the sun
cer and you have a simple and admirable ar-

PRACTICAL RECONsTRUCTiON.—The bill
reported by Mr. Julian, Chairman of the
Public Land Committee of the House, some
months ago, extending the Homestead law
over the public lands of the South, was re-
ported to the House and Senate by the Con-
i'erence Committees having It in charge, and
passed. It dedicates to actual settlement,
in small homes, some 46,000,000 acres, which
Can no longer be sold ; and secures it to the
poor, white and black. This is regarded as
one of the best practical measures of recon-

THE JAMAICA BARBARITIEs.—The London
Times publishes the results of the inquiries
of the commission appointed to investigate
the Jamaica attrocities. The total number
of persons shot and hanged was four hun-
dred and thirty-eight. Six hundred men
and womenwere flogged. and one thousand
houses burned, depriving four thousand per-
sons oi ilieirhomes. Eight hundred witness-
es weie examined, and their evidence reveal-
ed the resort of the British officers to a. sys-
tem of barbarism that would have disgraced
a sepoy in the eyes of a savage.

rance case has been deCided in Missouri.
The question arose upon the following facts
proved; A building is insured against loss
byjzrc. it falls down, being heavily over-
loaded with merchandise ; the fall occasions
a fire, which destroys the fallen material.
Query—ls the insurance company liable?
The court decidedithat the building insured,
having fallen, ceased to exist by reason of a
peril not insured against and hence that the
company was not liable.
