The schooner G.‘ W. urnell, owned by the Stillwater Iron Works 00., met with a serious disaster in passing down the Sound, on Sunday week. She was heavily loaded with scrap iron, a large part being on deck, and without any apparent cause, suddenly sunk, not giving even time for a man below deck to save himself. Those on deck went down with the schooner, but on rising suc- ceeded in gaining the topmasts where they clung until rescued by a passing vessel. The man .who was drowned was named—Benton and lived in Ridgefiele. The iron on board was valued at about $3,000. No Insurance. DANBonr.—At the adjourned school meet- ing held omthe evening of May 25th it was decided to build a primary school house on the corner of Highland avenue and Beaver St., in lieu of the rickety old building on Franklin St., and to commence operations at once On the New St., graded school. About 20 Fenians left Bridgeport, on Thursday evening to join the grand army of the Irish Republic. , The Bridgeport Cadets were recently the recipients of a beautiful flag from George S. Morris, son of Shelden Morris, Esq, of East Bridgeport. The flag is of hunting and ele- gantiy mounted. .<.-. @‘The Bridgeport Standard says that Mr. James Plait of Stratford, on Saturday sent his car-man, in New York, with a load of goods to be shipped on the Albany boats, with the exception of one box which was for the New Haven boat. Arriving at the pier of the New Haven Steamboat Co., and while the carman was taking the box intended for New Haven inside of the gate, and was Wait- ing to get his receipt signed by the clerk, all of which occupied but a few moments, some fellow stole the horse, truck and load. The freight stolen was valuable, consisting of silks and dress goods. Mr. Platt estimates his loss at $2,200. The detectives have been at work, stimulated by a reward of $500 offe- ed by Mr. Platt, but no clue as yet, to the prop- erty or rogues has been ob'ained. .‘Qp. filt is probable that the legislature will grant charters for two live-stock insurance companies at this session. One of these ls asked for by substantial farmers of New . Haven county, and the other is projected by the farmers of Windham county, and is to heart the mutual plan, and for the purpose of insuring neat cattle only, against the pos- sible ravages of the rinderpest, a few cases of which disease are said to have made their appearance in that section of the state. - ~<Q>s —— Dr. Solenlon Anderson, with three oth- ers, made an ascent at New York in a flying ship, Friday week.
