A Damon—The Dedication of the Presby-
terian Church of Darien, will be held on
Thursday afternoon, May 315i, the services
beginning at three o’clock. Sermon by the
Rev. Howard Crosby, D. D., of New York. ‘
The evening exercises will begin at quarter
before eight o’clock. '

pany bad a merry time of it, Monday night

tenaucy of the company. Orderly Sergeant.
John D. Nash, was duly elected, but strange
to say “declined the honor.” Sergeant Ed.
Smith, was then chosen, who also refused to
serve. Corporal A. N. Thomas, the village
postmaster and a good fellow, was then
chosen, and was finally induced to accept the
position, so 00. H. again has a full comple-
ment of commissioned ofiicers.
Bum—Gen. Ferry is announced to de~
liver a lecture in Bethe], this evening, for the
benefit of the Congregational Church.
DANBURY.—Tlle .75an says that
there are in Danbury, four of thebest blood-
ed stallions to be found in the United States.
Kohanzie Hose 00., No. 2, has been pre-
sented with a spanking trumpet by Mr. Stur-
ges Selleck.
Aeattle disease has made its appearance
in this vicinity which looks very singular.
It last'week carried ofi‘a very valuable cow
belonging to Martin H. Griffin of this place,
which died within a short time of its attack.
. In New Fairfield, likewise, last week, Mr.
Jerome Chase lost two cows, valued at $100
each, apparently from the same disease.
They were taken sick nearly at the same
time, and both died within thirty~six hours
after‘ the attack. Our, informant says the
disease looks very much like the Rinderpest.
_ A joint stock company is being formed for
manufacture of sand paper, emery wheels &c.
The Hose companies have been furnished
with 800 feet of new boss, by 93c Borough.

Rev. E. G. Andrews is to deliver a lecture
for the benefit of the Lyceum, on the even-

r. Seth W. Scofield sold last week a cow
and calf to Mr. W. M. Smith, for $200. Two
days before she was sold, she gave 26 quarts
of milk, without being at grass. When the
Calf was three weeks old, besides suppl ing
the calf, 10 3-4 lbs. of butter were ma e in
nine days from the surplus milk.

lowin descrifition of Wheeler & Wilson’s
new wing achine Manufactory now be-

“T _ ' building is situated on the block west
- of their present factory, and covers the en-
tire square; the whole space being roofed
over from street to street. It is .810 by 370
feet with angofi‘lce attached to the east side ;
this part is to be surmounted by a fine dome, ,
the interior of which will be seen from the
oflce below. The main work room, (which
is only 'one amongmany others) is 100 by
300 feet, and is lighted from each side and
the roof: In the center of the buildin , sunk
below the ground, are the engine an boiler
rooms ;_ thus placed to secure the workmen
and building from injury in case of an explo-
sion. The building is one story of 33 feet
in height, with a ventilating sky-light. thirty
three feet wide; it is to be constructed of
pressed brick, iron and glass, and made en-
tirel fire proof. The floor will be made of
hue bi‘archin from one iron girder to an-
other. he roo is supported by iron truss-
es of the respective lengths of 100 feet and
fifty feet each, which in their turn are sup-
ported b eight. inch columns. The iron
trusses one will cost upwards of $80,000.
The new building will contain most of the
fine machinery now in the present factory,
and is to de devoted to the manufacturing
of the iron and metal portions .of the sewing
machine alone; the wood work being done
in the “resent buildingiu
Mr. . in. Dorey of t Bridgeport, a con-
tractor in the wood shop at the Wheeler &
Wilson factory had his arm had] broken on
Tuesday afternoon by a stick ying frdm a
saw.
Thursday last was a great day for the
Bridgeport militia. Co. E, Capt. Cahill, 85
men; 00. B, Capt. Lacy, 75 men; and 00.
K, (of S:rutford,) Capt. Gray, 50 men, joined
together for their May’drill and parade. The
morning was spent in target shooting, and
.part'of the afternoon in battalion drill, un-
der command .of Col. Craufurd. ' At noon
Co. K, and other invited guests were provi- .
tied with dinner atasaloon. Among the ,

Q'An attempt to assassinate Count Bis-
mark was made in Berlin, May 7th, as the
minister was walking along the Unter den
Linden, returning from an audience with the
king. A young man came behind him and
fired two shots from a revolver at him. Bis-
mark turned and grasped the assassin, and
three barrels more were discharged in the
struggle, when he was secured and taken to
prison, where he stabbed himself nine times
and died the next morning. The young man
was a step-son of Karl Blind, the republican
refugee, and aged 22. The coolness of Bis-
mark is a feather in his cap.
Omens on Canaan Wanna—A Medfmd
correspondent of _the Boston Journal says
that “last fall he applied to his trees protectors
which were pronounced the bestin the neigh-
borhood, and notwithstanding not a single
grub passed over them, the trees, like others
in the vicinity, are this season covered with
worms which, are now pursuing their devas-
tating work. In his opinion the canker
worms do not originate from the grub, and
he challenges proof that they do. The sub-
ject is one worthy of investigation.

In the year 1846, the writer embarked ~in.the Drug
Business in the city of Philadelphia, and while thus en-
med, made several experiments in regard to the most
desirable mode of preparing Fluid Extracts. liy-efi‘orts
being successful—the articles being approved and used
by the Medical Faculty—I was desirous of placing them
before the public, but hesitated for some time before
concluding to resort to newsmper advertising, knowing
of the prejudices that existed in the minds of many
against using advertised Medicines or Nostrums, but
through the advice of friends, and those who had used
them, this objection was overcome.
After 18 years’ exertion, commencing in a small
way,thepopularity of my articles has extended to all
parts of the United States, and .widely throughout For-
eign countries—and this-in the face of much opposition.
Every means has been resorted to by unprincipled deal-
ers since their merit and success have been known—
mch as advertising larger bottles at less price, censur-
tissmonts—but I am happy to state that out of the
many who have resorted to this, none have been suc-
