FAIRFIELD COUNTY ITEMS.

RIDCEPIELD ——A Floral Society has been
organized in Ridgefield, having for its ob—
ject the cultivation of Flowers, and social in-
tercourse in the community. For this pur-
pose they will hold monthly Festivals, and
have ofl°ered liberal Premiums for Bouquets
of both cultivated and wild flowers. The
Secretary, Ebenezer Jones, Esq., has issued
circulars inviting citizens to cooperate with
the society in making'these exhibitions both
pleasing and attractive, by contributions of
Flowers, and by influencing friends to con-
tribute and compete tor the prizes.

 

DANBURY.—Prof. Fox has returned to
town. and in a labored essay on "Lying” de-
nies the story published in the papers to the
effect that he had been arrested for bigamy,‘
and incarcerated in the Tombs.

A small child'of Mr. Isaiah Nutt was re-
cently kicked in the head and knocked
senseless, by a horse of Mr. N utt’s; at last
accounts he was doing well.

Belly, the man who stabbed McCoy a few
days since, was arrested last "Monday by of-
flCer Crosby. He was bound over to the
August term of Court.

Andrew Hull went Piking Thursday, and
caught seventy-two.

Business is looking up a little, William H.
Tweedy’s farctory is about to start in full

STAMFORD—The building committee of
the First School District have been author-
ized to go ahead and build a new and com-
modious school house. .

The Directors of the Steamboat company
have appropriated $3,000 for the purpose of
cleaning out the channel so that the Ship-
pan can reach her dock at low tide.

The First National Bank has declared a
dividend of four pel cent, free of govern-
ment tax, payable on the 2lst inst.

Capt. John Thompson, who runs a schoon-
er from the Cove, was at Elizabethport
Thursday week, receiving a cargo of coal.
In the evening he was missed from the ves-
sel. .On the Monday following his body was
discovered in the water floating near the
shore. It is thoughtthat his death was caused
by foul means. » '

Rev. Wm. Tatiock, of St. Peter’s Church,
Albany, has accepted the call to the parish
of St. John’s and will commence his minis-
terial labors on Trinity Sunday, (May 27.)

BRIDGEPORT.—-Last Tuesday night While
Mrs. John Smith of East Bridgeport, was
attempting to close a window she pushed
a sash out of its casing. The Window and
Mrs. Smith both fell to the ground together,
a distance of several feet, breaking one of
the lady's legs.

WAfter the vote for Senator in the
House on Wednesday, was announced, by
which it appeared that seven Union votes
were cast contrary to the agreement made
in the caucus, Mr. Burr, of the Hartford
limes, went up to Mr. Barnum and said :
“Well, we are raking out your party. We
have got out seven members to-day." “Yes,”
replied Mr. Barnum, “the same number that
were raked out of Mary Magdalene."

Joseph G. Mead was destroyed by fire on the

Mrs. Stephen Knapp died suddenly recent-
ly. She went out to milk a cow, and not
returning search was made, and she was
found dead. '

Mr. Fenniel is building a commodious
house at Rocky Neck for the accommoda-
tion of summer boarders.

Mr. Evan Sniflie, while cutting stone a few
days ago, fell and broke his leg.

are engaged in halibut fishing. One of them
took 130 halibutin one day last week.
—The Saturday Press among 'other sug-
gestions which will enable a person to avoid
the cholera recommends: Don’t get it on the
brain, and to this end, avoid reading the dai-
ly papers. Endeavor, if possible to keep a
clean conscience, and two or three clean
shirts. Rise with the lark, but avoid larks
in the evening. Be above ground in all your
dwellings, and above board in all your deal-
ings. Love your neighbors as yourself, but
don’t have too many of them in the same
house with on. ‘
-—'—Mr. R0 ert Tyler writes a letter to the
Montgomery Mail, stating that in his opinion
the estimates of Commodore Maury, respect~
ingthe losses of the South during the war,
are altogether too high, and he cuts them
down about one-half, as follows : By eman-
cipation, $1,700,000.000; expenses of the
war, $600,000,000; destruction of private
property, $700,000,000; additional Federal
taxation, $500,000,000; total, $3,500,000,000.
-—-Miss Clara Louise Kellogg, the Ameri-
can prima donna, has taken rooms in New
Britain, thisState, whereshe will spend the
summer.
-—-Gen. Beauregard and Gen. .Wirt Adams, “
the celebrated cavalry leaders oi Mississippi,
sailed from New York on Wednesday, in the
Scolia, for Europe. Gen. Beauregard will
make an extended tour on the continent be-
fore retrrtng to his native State
—A'n election is to be held in West Vir-
ginia on the 24th inst, in which a vote is to
be taken on an amendment to the State con-
stitution to exclude rebels from citizenship
and from suffrage, unless they shall have
volunteered law the military or naval ser-
vice of the U nited States.
—-—Wendell Phillips has an income of $60,-
000 a year. ,
———Miss Carter, the renowned American
beauty. who caused so great a sensation at
the Fancy balls at the Tuilleries, about a ear
since, is dead. It is even said that the m-
press was nettled at the polite attentions she

the Wyoming massacre, died near York

authorize the sale of $100,000 of bonds‘of
the company.

New York & New Haven railroad was held
at New Haven on Thursday, at which the
annual report was received. . The following
Board of Directors were elected : George B.
Carhart, George N. Miller, Abraham R. Van
Nest, James J. Roosevelt, Wilson G. Hunt,
all of New York; Jonathan Godfrey, South-
port ; E. C. Scranton, E. H. Trowbridge, W.

part of February, 1865, I was suffering from a violent
